Wip. I think the resurrection beasts are cool.
A (maybe) not very popular opinion about Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's ending. Major spoilers of the ending(s) ahead.
I've seen people discuss all sorts of interpretations when it comes to Clair Obscur's endings. Some focus on Maelle's and Verso's happiness, others on the power of creation and the responsibilities that come with it. Some debate how many lives are truly lost depending on which ending you choose.
But when I watched both endings and finally stepped back to look at the story as a whole everything screamed "Verso's Canvas is a metaphor for escapism".
Verso's Canvas plays the role art plays in real life. It's incredibly common for artists to use their work as a way to escape reality, especially when reality is painful. Art becomes a place where you can live the life you were never able to have, preserve what you've lost, or simply process emotions that would otherwise be unbearable. There's a reason artists are so often portrayed as troubled souls: some of the most meaningful art comes from humanity's darkest and most vulnerable places.
The game doesn't condemn the desire to seek refuge in the world you've created. On the contrary, it understands why someone would want to stay there. Leaving behind a place that gave you comfort, and one that you built yourself above that is painful. But what the story argues is that, while stepping away from that cherished place hurts, choosing to remain there forever is ultimately even more painful.
And that also limits your art.
Both endings convey this perfectly.
When you meet Edward Elric he gives off the impression that he's the short-tempered hot-headed "violence is the answer to all life's questions" kind of protagonist, and it's in fact incredible character craft that he's actually the character who ends the series with a negative-3 kill count.
people killed: 0
direct orders of "you really really need to kill this guy" ignored: 1
ongoing murders being committed by Ed's own friends/colleagues that Ed got in the way of to specifically stop that murder from happening: 2
God's worst soldier Edward Elric. Showed up as the youngest member of the Amestrian army, took millions of dollars from them, never followed a single order, helped dismantle their fascist regime, left with a lower kill count than he arrived with, then fucked off to go be a house-husband. Character of all time.
You know, when you said "negative-3 kill count," I, who haven't seen the anime, thought, "He resurrected 3 people?????" But I'm seeing here on the wiki that apparently resurrection in this anime is a terrible idea.

it's almost summer do you guys want my stupid hyperoptimized lemonade recipe that takes half a day to make and whips absolute ass
Fruited Lemonade That Makes You Reconsider It All
ingredience:
lemons/limes (this needs to make up the bulk of the fruit being used, like at least 80%)
whatever other fruits or fruit scraps you want, plus any herbs/other flavorings you want to try. by fruit scraps I mean things like cherry pits, apple peels, pineapple cores, strawberry ends, things like that.
granulated white sugar, the coarser the better, 50% by weight of total citrus rinds + 100% by weight of any additional fruit. you'll measure this after you prep the fruit.
water as needed
equipment:
a few nonmetallic mixing bowls
a mesh strainer
a chinoise, ricer or some cheesecloth
a kitchen scale
a citrus juicer or reamer (manual or electric)
a potato masher
juice the citrus through a strainer - saving all rinds - and refrigerate the juice for the time being. dice the rinds and other fruits if any, keeping the rinds separate. make note of weights, and measure your sugar.
Place sugar in a large nonmetallic bowl. If using non-citrus fruits and/or any other flavorings, mix them in with the sugar and mash with potato masher. add diced citrus rinds, mix thoroughly, and mash again. cover and let stand at room temperature for at least 4 hours. this allows the sugar to draw out flavors that would otherwise get discarded with the rinds, and the rinds' acids should be enough to dissolve the sugar into a syrup.
Afterward, mash one last time, then collect the syrup by pressing the macerated mixture through a strainer/chinoise or ricer, or squeeze it through cheesecloth. if you want, this can be saved as a standalone syrup at this point, for use in cocktails or desserts. if not, slowly pour the reserved juice through the solids to to help get the remaining syrup out, and squeeze/press again. do the same thing one more time with warm water (roughly the same amount of water as juice). discard solids (or try making sangria with them!).
taste the mixture and add more water if necessary. a stronger mix is totally fine if you anticipate serving over ice on a hot day, or adding booze, or if there was a lot of non-sour fruit. keep in mind that it will taste a bit less sweet once it's chilled. pour into a pitcher and refrigerate.
citrus oils will float to the top, so stir/shake before serving. love you. enjoy.
some tried and true flavor combos:
straight lemon or lime, or any combination of the two, is of course an untouchable classic
lemon & strawberries (that's pussy babe!)
lemon & orange with a hint of vanilla (creamsiclemonade...?)
lemon & apples or apple peels with cinnamon/ginger/allspice (for late summer)
some cocktail type combos, booze optional:
lemon or lime & berries with basil + gin
lime & mint + white rum
lime & ginger + dark rum
lime & cucumber + gin
lime & orange (berries optional) + tequila
lemon, orange & cherry + brandy, bourbon, or rye whiskey
holy gods

The Fantasy Romans book, at last
So excited to reveal the cover to my new book today, The Wisdom of Emperors! You can check it out on Kickstarter, along with the full summary!
Inspired by the story of the Ancient Roman emperor Hadrian and his lover Antinous, The Wisdom of Emperors is a second-world adult fantasy novel written in the style of a fictional academic text. It documents the translation and study of a world-changing artifact discovered in an archaeological dig: a manuscript which provides the clues to finally unravel the mysteries surrounding one of the most famous emperors of the ancient world.
The Kickstarter campaign is for the deluxe collector's edition, but you'll be able to preorder the standard hardback/paperback, PLUS the early-access ebook, available to backers well before general publication to everyone else. And there's going to be some really, REALLY cool merch as well (genuine papyrus bookmarks, designed and blockprinted by my own hands!)
Anyway, the Kickstarter goes live on May 5th at 4:00pm EST, so if you are the sort of person who reads news articles about major new archaeological discoveries and gets SUPER MAD that they don't tell you absolutely everything about why it's important and what it changes about what we thought we knew..... this one's for you, babe. ;)
Also I was told by a publishing industry insider that this book probably wouldn't sell because publishers are explicitly saying that they don't want "challenging" books, they want books that (and i QUOTE) "aren't necessarily making readers think"
So if that pisses you the FUCK off, sauce me a signal boost.
Fuck I love asparagus!!! hey did you know? Pan fry gnocchi for 4 minutes, toss in a pound of asparagus cut into 1/2 inch pieces till it’s bright and still crispy 4-7 minutes, melt in a combination of 4tbsp butter, 2tbsp miso, 2tsp white wine vinegar, 2tsp sesame oil, salt and pepper, then turn off heat and toss in two cups baby arugula. Takes 15 minutes top to tail!!!
big fan of butter, asparagus, garlic, lemon zest and juice, then add creme fraiche to make a silky sauce you can put on pasta
Ohhhh wow oh my god ok this is the asparagus post now everyone tell me your favorite recipe with asparagus in it
prev tags @cargopantsman you’re not special we’re all getting horny about asparagus
I'm gonna blame Chicago Suburbinitis still
I throw minced garlic in butter in the pan, cop the asparagus into thirds, add the bottom ends, then the middle, then the tops, putting a lid on over the pan for a couple minutes each time and giving the pan a shooka shooka so it doesn’t stick, and finish with some pepper and adobo seasoning. I eat that shit straight out the pan
Imagine all the things I could do if I just did them.
