Skip Kiss!!

There's a couple things about the Skip Kiss Scene (in TV canon) that people have probably mentioned before but I haven't seen people bring them up so I'm gonna talk about it.

Everyone else had family to celebrate with

Like, you can hear the announcers mention it--after the Admirals win, there's that routine time when every player's loved ones come out onto the ice to congratulate them, give them hugs, give them kisses, etc. The other players have girlfriends, wives, daughters, parents, siblings--and for a second there, Scott has no one.

That's why I'll Believe In Anything starts the second he hands the cup over to Vaughn, the second he's left hanging. Scott hasn't had a family, really, in so long. The statement Jacob's making--about queer people deserving love (sunshine!)--is even bigger than just, like, one relationship or just romance or just one kind of love. Scott deserves to be loved and to be loved as himself, Kip deserves the same--and that goes for any kind of love. They deserve to be seen and held and known. Scott's parents died when he was young, he's been alone for so long, and so when he calls Kip down it's not just a "coming out" scene. He's asking for what everyone else already has, and what he deserves, a chance to love and be loved.

It was an olive branch and an apology

I love the lyrics of this fucking song so much, and Jacob was *very* intentional with his timing. Right as Kip has entered the ice and they're about to kiss come some of my favorite lines:

Scott was coming out, sure. But like I was saying before, he was also asking for love in a more general sense. He was ALSO apologizing to Kip. Despite being "ridiculously public", it's intimate and personal and it's Scott asking for forgiveness in a sense, and also promising to be there for Kip. It's so many things at once and Jacob Tierney has a big, beautiful mind.

Shane’s fame is so important to me—his specific breakout fame to people who don’t even know hockey. The endorsements in the show have a somewhat janky look because the show itself isn’t high budget (they fake it pretty well but after a million reheats I’m like oh they don’t even show the video game on the tv when they’re playing at the cottage lmao) but like imagine Hudson’s sleek Peloton Ad with Shane instead, but instead of the artsy stuff they have Hudson do, it’s just Shane Hollander, man that is a machine, pushing his body to the limit. Imagine the Nike ads and the cologne ads on the side of a snowy cliff. He’s gorgeous, model gorgeous, and not all premiere athletes have those looks. And Shane will be what you want him to be. If you need him to be the hometown hero sitting at a fast food table pretending to eat a Tim Horton’s breakfast sandwich, he’ll do it. If you need to zoom in on his compelling freckles and driven gaze to sell athleisure clothing, he’ll let you. Shane wants legacy and notoriety. He wants to control the conversation surrounding him. He wants there to be mystery, like there is with all exceptional people. But in all his commercials, he’s notably alone. He’s a myth.

I think about Simone Biles dropping out of the Olympics due to struggles with performance, and the mythology created around elite performance athletes like Ilia Malinin, who had a very public fumble at the Olympics despite all the hype. This created a ton of dialogue. Where they had once been something to marvel at, now they are something to scrutinize. Scrutinized by people who know nothing about their sport, even!

Shane doesn’t disappoint though. He brings Montreal three cups. If you don’t know hockey, you know Shane Hollander. Just like you know Tom Brady, Serena Williams, LeBron James. Michelle Kwan, and Simone Biles. You’ve probably rooted for these people alongside diehard fans even when you yourself know nothing about the sport. That’s who Shane Hollander is. He can belong to everyone. He is everyone’s athlete.

And then he’s outed. And then he trips. Suddenly, this man who up until then has lived life mostly unscrutinized (besides the microaggressions of the insular hockey world), who had been unquestionably A Badass, someone to admire, someone to put on a pedestal, he’s suddenly human. He’s someone who passionately kisses his rival in the side yard of his best friend and teammate’s house. He’s someone who carried on a secret affair that has rocked the foundations of the sports world. And because he kissed his rival, because he has revealed himself to be human, he is now brought to the same level of scrutiny as anyone else. It is open season for opinions about Shane Hollander.

Not every opinion would bad. Many would be good. Many would love him for it. But the fact that people feel entitled to make the opinion means that the fabric of Shane’s fame has changed. He’s now up for interpretation. You don’t just sit back and marvel at him, you now have other things to say that cloud the myth. And that changes what he is allowed to do, even as an athlete.

He’s no longer allowed to trip on a piece of ice or a bad edge. He isn’t given grace. Because if his secrets hold so much meaning, that also means that his outward actions now also hold meaning. When something so intimate about you is revealed, the stony facade of excellence crumbles. Now everyone has a take. Everyone has an opinion. You are now a public conversation, instead of pleasant inevitability. How can the team count on him, once he reveals his humanity? How can they depend on him, now that he’s a conversation, instead of a lecture?

You can tell the difference in Lestat’s intent based on who was telling the story.

In Claudia’s version of events, Lestat was being cruel by making her watch Charlie burn. Grabbing her with his hands and forcing her to gaze as his face melted. His face is serious as he tortures her with this lesson.

In Lestat’s memories, he was holding Claudia’s hand the entire time as she watched Charlie burn in front of her. His face is melancholic and tearful as he likely recalls Nicki being burned by Armand. He was enduring the pain with her in real time.

Claudia never knew any of this because she never looked back to see his face.

I'm not saying this to hate on Lestat but to a degree I am pissed off because fine the train scene did not happen as described in S1 or Daniel's book but what did happen then? What did you say to your daughter on the train that she caught try to escape you, was it a kind word that brought her back to a house she hated, did you gently whisper in her ear and remind her of the horror she endured, did you simply carry her home, did you tell her she was important and loved and needed? Or are you a parent unable to acknowledge that you used an awful turn of phrase that was passing thought to you but haunted your child.

The amount of slavery in Ancient Rome was legitimately terrifying tbh

Y’all know that I’m into ancient Roman history and I do a lot of research on it but even though I should be used to it by now sometimes I read an anecdote about how an individual slave was treated and I’m hit with the realization that like a third of the population was living like that and I just need to put my head in my hands for a second

Emperor Hadrian randomly stabbed a slave in the eye in a fit of rage and he was supposedly unusually sympathetic to slaves.

There’s other instances of people randomly punching slaves that they didn’t even know because they got in their way or something. This was just normal behavior.

And slaves didn’t rebel en masse because if even one slave committed an act of violent rebellion it was common practice to kill every slave and former slave in the household.

People only took notice for posterity when these mass executions got into the hundreds of people. One of the few recorded for the history books is of over 400 people being killed because one guy stabbed his enslaver.

Like how many people throughout history were beaten to death because some rich asshole was angry and there was no legal or social consequences for doing so? We don’t know.

When you study ancient history you’re reminded that slavery has never once been kind or justified. It just takes on different forms of evil in every time and place that it infects.

loustat has truly (to me) never been more couple than louis calling lestat and asking him to look at regina and tell him if she really looks like claudia.

like they are NOT on good terms this season, but this is a moment of, "i am showing this painful, infected wound to you because you have a matching one, and you are the only one who can do this for me." like this is a big, extremely vulnerable ask from louis.

and even lestat's quiet "yes. okay." in this request even though things are bad, because this is a request of one parent to another and thus sidesteps the conflict of, "we are supposed to be something to each other, but you didn't even call when i was shot." like louis is louis and the great love of his life, but louis is also the person he raised a child with, and that bond still stands strong enough to call a favor in on.

and louis's tone when lestat brings up claudia's eyes and louis jumps in with, "i know, right? there's no spark." and there is SO MUCH pain in it but also such a moment of, "she was our child and you know her like i did. you know her eyes. talk to me about her because it's the only way she can still exist, and you are the only one she can exist for me with. she was ours."

like there is SO MUCH piled on their relationship, but the way the core of it is, "we are parents without our child, and the only thing stronger than love between us is grief."

and also it's always about claudia. the story remains about two fathers haunted by the memory of their daughter. lestat's music becomes raw and vulnerable and pure when he is haunted by claudia, when he allows himself to think about her again. the entire album is being rerecorded because of claudia. akasha will awake because of the pain of lestat losing his daughter. the story is claudia.

the writers did so fucking well at portraying and deconstructing the over abundant amount that lestat in the text romanticizes his abusers. he calls it the "seduction of magnus" multiple times throughout the vampire chronicles instead of admitting he was preyed upon. when you read the books you have to look between the lines of his flowery prose and avoidance but the show took a corny over the top music video style approach and then slammed it next to a full blown ptsd flashback to make sure the audience did not have a chance to misinterpret or mock anything and i respect them for that
