Since you have degrees related to Jewish studies PLEASEEEE RECOMMEND ME BOOKS im begging.
Ive read a lot but would love to know what you read <3
OOOO i’ve been working on a reading list but in the meantime, i have some favorites i wrote down that i read for jstudies courses or read on my own during that time:
there are a bunch of others, including ones about mizrahi history and i want to break them into categories and discuss which israeli new historians are biased and which are neutral etc. a bunch of these are pretty expensive, but there was an anon who is still in my inbox (i see you and appreciate you 💙 i’ve been working on a list!) who said they knew ways of getting some books that were unavailable. i’d recommend ebooks and used books.
i added a lot of the books i read for jstudies courses and archaeology courses to my goodreads so i could save them. i want to look at syllabi as well when i’m able to get on a computer again.
i am also working on preserving a book written by german professors after wwii about the alliance of arabs and nazis at that time and how some leaders of the “palestinian” (then just called arab) armies were ex nazis. it has some of the best sources i’ve seen on the subject. if you want more on that, dm me. your username will not be public. (the book is SO hard to get and $1,000 on amazon LMAO).
thank you so much for asking!! and sorry to the other anons who also asked. i’ve had health issues lately and havent been at my house on my computer. compiling a list on my phone is a lot 🤦😂 it will come though!!
if you buy any: jew in the modern world and jew in the medieval world are compendiums of primary sources. they are excellent. you wont get the context of secondary sources or analysis though so i’d rec pairing one of those with one of the general history books like sachar or zeitlin. you can then compare the two side by side. and then once you’ve read general histories, you can narrow the scope. i’ll reblog with a few more general histories
a few for general history. i wouldnt rec martin gilbert’s arab-israeli conflict book yet. i read the atlas of jewish history for a course and it was a good intro and had excellent maps, but i need to reread the arab israeli conflict atlas.
martin gilbert is more neutral btw but also more pro israel at the same time? the neutrality comes from his british bias. i dont remember a lot of discussion about what the british did to cause the conflict. i need to reread though.
i recommend checking out general histories before books on the conflict, but the deir yassin one is NECESSARY.
