Why is every piece of media now about “surprise! bet you didn’t see that coming” instead of themes, character arcs, internal logic, and consistency in writing?
It’s okay if your audience (especially hardcore fans) predicts your story. It means that they picked up the clues you put in, understood the themes you were trying to convey, empathised with the characters…
How is that a bad thing?
Instead each piece of media feels like it’s written by a marketing team that is looking at the latest statistics for TRP ratings and box-office collections.

There is a reasonable and logical way to lower abortions.
You lower abortion by lowering unwanted and unviable pregnancies. But more importantly- you actively improve society and people’s quality of life by lowering unwanted and unviable pregnancies.
this “bon appetit” meme has turned into some sort of bizarre telephone game where each incarnation sounds more and more different than the original. in what way does “bon appetit” sound like “osteoporosis”
i don’t know but it’s cracking me up every time i even think about it
guys guys guys
‘osteoporosis’ is a disease in which bone mass decreases
so they mean fucking
“Bone Atrophy”
I’m putting my foot down, if you don’t Know you’re flirting you’re not Flirting. Flirting requires knowledge and intent. If you’re not doing it on purpose you’re just bantering. I will die on this hill, yes.
I always feel like people think I’m flirting and that makes me feel unsafe. this makes me feel like I have some agency and that I can just kinda say, “no, flirting requires forethought. we’re just talking and I’m being nice.”
SAY THIS LOUDER
Its so strange to spend all your teenage years thinking you’re the ugliest creature in the world. An absolute swamp goblin, if you will.
But then you stumble upon old teen photos when you’re 20 only to realise that you were never ugly? You just looked like a child. Your vision of yourself was just being manipulated by hormones, insecurity and unrealistic beauty standards.
So yeah if you’re a teenager right now and you think you’re the ugliest motherfucker in the universe you’re wrong. Wait it out for a few more years, this WILL be just a phase in your life and you will overcome it, you can do this.
would you like a nice glass of
A Discovery of Witches: Dressing the Vampires, Witches & Daemons【2/🔮】
Matthew is a vampire in very dark colors obviously the blacks and the greys. When he meets Diana, he becomes more relaxed. Lighter grey shirts to begin with, and progresses to blue, lighter weight suits, good cloth, well-fitted.

Instead of killing Medusa, Perseus decides to convince her to team up with him to fight the Kraken. What follows is the legend about the greatest tag team of heroes of all mythology.
tumblr acting like kylo ren’s story is as simple as boohoo mom and dad ignored me so i lash out by throwing tantrums and killing people
do you realize that this is what’s happening in the world today? young kids are being used by terrorists. snoke started on kylo when he was young and vulnerable. emphasis on young and vulnerable. and feeling abandoned by his parents. this is literally what is happening in the world right now. terrorists target the children because they’re not set in their ways and if they start them young, these kids grow old with their foundations as whatever the predators want them to be. whatever they need to be able to use the kids for their twisted causes.
this is the exact same reason why kylo ren thinks what he’s doing is right
am i saying he’s not accountable? no. but do i want to see his character be further developed and explored? to see his character rise above the manipulations of snoke on him as a kid? fuck yes
story-wise that is why he is fucking compelling to me as a character especially with current events and yall reduce him to a whiny ass boy that you all think of as a bad villain
you’re fucking right. he is a “bad” villain. and to those who want an iredeemable villain in star wars he’s not your guy. he is a “bad” villain because he has always been conflicted by the pull to the light. he is conflicted when he does the things he thinks are right (right = evil). like come on that is literally the first movie
and i don’t understand why some people were so confused when rian johnson said he and rey are sort of dual protagonists. like??? are you paying attention? KYLO REN IS NOT THE VILLAIN IN THIS STORY. rey, actual protagonist, went through the same shit and it only made her kind you say. well don’t you see kylo ren is just the other side of rey? with snoke lurking on the side to ensure ben solo stays dead inside?
this makes me so fucking angry tbh. i’m tired of seeing posts about how people who like kylo ren as a character are apologists and pro this and that shit and oh yeah blame it on the absentee parents boohoo. it’s such a one-sided view of kylo’s story. he is a victim AND he is accountable for the shit he’s done. it can both exist on a character??? and it’s not even a subtext on the movie. it’s so explicit that some people are just being too selectively blind to see it for whatever reason.
i literally have no idea how he’s gonna redeem himself especially after killing his father. i really don’t know. but those kids recruited by terrorist groups that have killed people in the name of their cause and want to quit and remove themselves from the evil organizations they once swore allegiance to… do i not want to see them renounce the false and evil beliefs and get back into the light? even if they never fully redeem themselves, isn’t it a good thing if they try? isn’t it a good thing for them to start choosing the good? that kylo ren’s redemption is a good fucking message to say that it’s not too late for everyone? that you can’t undo the past mistakes but you can do something about the present and the future? i’m not talking about kylo ren turning into a saint. but just the mere fact that these lost and fallen ones stand back up and find their way to the right and good again… isn’t that what we should want? i literally don’t understand why this redemption arc is such a bad thing for some people. like who are we to say who can and cannot at least try to redeem themselves?
Mental Crop Rotation
When farmers grow the same crop too many years in a row, it can leave their soil depleted of minerals and other nutrients that are vital to the health of their fields.
To avoid this, farmers will often alternate the crops that they grow because some plants will use up different minerals (such as nitrogen) while other plants replenish those minerals. This process is known as “crop rotation.”
So the next time you find that you need to step away from a project to work on something else for a while, don’t beat yourself up for “quitting” that project. Give yourself permission to practice “mental crop rotation” to maintain a healthy brain field.
Because I’ve found that when that unnecessary guilt and pressure are removed from the process, a good mental crop rotation can help you feel more energized and invigorated than ever once you’re ready to rotate back to that project.
: A crucial part of crop rotation is that the field is let fallow sometimes. You plant what’s called a “cover crop”, which is something you don’t expect to harvest– it’s there for its roots to hold the soil in place, and often it’ll be what’s called a nitrogen-fixer, i.e. a plant that can pull nitrogen out of the air and fix it into the soil with its roots (but sometimes it won’t, sometimes it’s really just there to shelter the soil surface), and then you’ll till in that cover crop, or let the frost kill it and the stalks lie as mulch, and then you’ll rotate productive crops back into that field the next season.
It’s important, though, to understand that during the fallow period, no nutrients are removed from that ground, and nothing is expected of it. Whatever the land grows then, it keeps, and it gets tilled back in or decomposes in place, to return its energy to the earth.
We’re not allowed, in our current society, to just let our minds be fallow for a bit, to produce nothing for export, to make nothing that can be sold. But it’s part of good land stewardship, to give every field time when it doesn’t need to give you anything back.
So yes, grow and produce different things from time to time, rotate them around your mind and exercise different mental muscles, take different things from your creative processes, yes– but also, give yourself a fallow spell now and again, and let the field of your mind grow things for itself to keep, to break down and save for later.
when i first discovered @seananmcguire and her books it was the newsflesh series. i was hooked immediately. i mean, hello! main character is a disabled journalist surrounded by zombies… it’s literally me!!
when feedback came out i was so hyped. more well written zombies and journalism. and then… then i clicked to one of the main characters being gender fluid. with alternating pronouns but mainly they/them. i had to put the book down because i started crying. not just a popular book that i bought in a mainstream shop beyond their lgbt section… but by my favourite author. it made me so happy.
then the other day i decided to treat myself to into the drowning deep where the main character doesn’t just say she doesn’t see gender that labels are boring- she actually says she is bi and she mentions another nonbinary person she has dated. yet again i was in tears.
then i discovered two of her books, indexing and indexing: reflections, under her other name that were on kindle unlimited. cool and slightly twisted versions of fairy tales, what’s not to love? i was pleased to see gay characters as main characters and then… yet again a trans character. who has his sister defend him and correct people and just…
lgbt+ people can exist outside of our coming out narratives. we can be mentioned in the actual story and not just revealed as a ~fun fact~ on twitter years later.
honestly please read some of these books because they made my queer little heart so happy
For people who want to FIND these books to read, the books with excerpts posted are are, respectively: Feedback by Mira Grant, Indexing by Seanan McGuire, and Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant.
*Seanan writes horror stuff under the name Mira Grant
Also notable:
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire - has an asexual protagonist and that whole series (Wayward Children) has a really important trans character.
The October Daye books (first book is Rosemary and Rue) have a decent amount of queer representation, though it takes a couple of books (but stick with it!): Off the top of my head - and bearing in mind I’m in the middle of a reread - and trying to do so WITHOUT SPOILERS - there’s a main f/f couple introduced in book 4. There’s a trans character who is very awesome, though the fact that this character is trans isn’t revealed until a few books after this character’s first appearance (so, spoilers). And there are more, but I can’t figure out how to phrase it without making it spoiler-tastic.
Word of God is that most of the fae are bi or pan, and there are quite a few people who - canonically and on-page - have dated someone of the same gender. (ESPECIALLY if you read the short stories, which have more room for looking at characters’ backstories and what’s happening beyond what’s going on right in front of Toby.)
And if this sounds like a commercial it’s because I want more people to read her books so I can squee and shriek at them, and so I have more fanfic to read. Also if more people read the books, then she gets to write MORE books and her cats get fed.
Victor refusing to make the Monster a wife because he was worried they’d breed is such a cop out. Like, you’re cobbling together body parts from charnel houses. You can just not give her any ovaries. You can just spay her like a cat. Why are you this dumb Victor. You’re a doctor.
the implication that victor spend weeks giving the monster a working dick is also extremely weird
Something to remember is that Victor didn’t just give the monster a working dick! He wanted his creation to be made of the best parts of men-it’s why the monster is made up of so many different pieces rather than one fresh corpse, why he’s so large, and why Victor is disappointed that he isn’t beautiful.
So, what does this mean? It means that Victor looked at the dicks of various corpses, testing not only to make sure they work, but also to find what he considered to be the best corpse dick. Does this mean the monster was extremely hung? Or did Victor simply pick the dick that seemed most attractive to him? Did he memorize the appearance of the dicks, or did he line them up to compare?
We’ll never know, because the original story never touches on the subject, and it’s one of the few flaws in Mary Shelley’s work.
I know I started this conversation but I’m so sorry I did
Considering we know who Mary Shelley was spending time around I guarantee this was a CONVERSATION that she actively and adamantly refused to actually include in the text
Well, there is ONE adaptation which includes this very discussion.
