science has always been political. what gets studied. what doesnt. who gets to do the studying. on and on and on.
scientists on this post: yuuuup 👍
people who aren't scientists: um actually ☝️
The main reason I’m pushing for people to stop using the term ‘pedophile’ and instead use the term ‘child sexual abusers’, is because since all discussions of child sexual abuse focus on this idea of an evil person who is just out to get kids because they are sexual attracted to them, it makes it hard for kids who where sexually assaulted by people who don’t fit that description to realize they were sexually assaulted.
It didn’t register for me until recently that my experiences of being forced to strip naked multiple times at the mental hospital to be ‘checked’ when I was 14 was sexual assault, because the people who did it were nurses/doctors who clearly didn’t find me sexually attractive but instead used it as a form of humiliation and control towards children they deemed as ‘unruly’ and ‘uncooperative’ (ie. children who asked to be treated like people). I thought only people who fit into this idea of a child attracted pedo could be child sexual abusers, so I thought my experience didn’t count.
Stepping away from the idea that there is a pedophile boggieman and instead highlighting that anyone can be a child sexual abuser will help more people realize that their experiences are sexual assault.
my stepfather would openly sexually harass me and my siblings at dinner while also loving the fantasy of killing pedophiles. whether he personally found our abuse sexually gratifying was frankly irrelevant to whether it traumatized us. whether he would be considered a pedophile or not doesn't change that he committed sexual abuse of children
I think in his mind there was a type of horrible person out there who does horrible things, and because he didn't think of himself as fitting that category, his actions could not be judged
"they've had intercourse" "i know that i'm asking if they've kissed"
i think abt this a lot
TIL the reason you don’t find much Lyme’s Disease in California is not because we don’t have Ticks, or Lyme Disease Vectors; but rather: because the Western Fence Lizard (if you live anywhere in California this is your regular Garden Variety Lizard) has adapted a passive immune response that makes their blood lethal to Lyme Disease Bacteria. Any Tick that feeds on one gets its gut cleansed of Lyme Disease as a side effect.
Fucking neat.
There is a new vaccine going into Phase 3 trials from Valneva and Pfizer as well as a monoclonal antibody-based prophylactic treatment being researched at UMass!
"the only cure for this weird disease is the special lizard blood" is a Star Trek TOS plot that escaped into the real world
I’m not gonna platform this idiot but I saw somebody reblog a post from a radfem I think by accident. But the post claimed that men who hire prostitutes are “rapists who buy their victims silence”
I don’t think I need to explain to y’all why this is wrong but in case I do, buying a service from someone and following their rules as a client is not a breech of consent.
A lot of the danger that comes from being a prostitute has to do with its illegality. If a client breaks the rules and the service provider can’t file a complaint without risking imprisonment of themselves and/or their client, that’s not a safe work environment.
The idea that nobody would willingly sell sexual services unless they’re desperate is just false. There’s also a lot of other jobs people do when they’re desperate and they don’t like doing. For me it was working retail.
The difference between me pretending to be happy for clientele while working retail and someone pretending to be happy while selling sexual services to clients is that while I was working retail I at least theoretically had sick leave, health insurance, and a way to file a complaint if a customer assaulted me.
Sex work isn’t inherently any more degrading or miserable than any other kind of work. The issue is the lack of protection and workers rights.
A guide on Mount Everest, 57 year old Hillary Dawa Sherpa, was separated from the British climber he had been hired to guide, ran out of oxygen, fell into a crevasse, was trapped in the crevasse for 2 and a half days before freeing himself and walking/crawling back towards base camp. He was alone on the mountain for 6 days.
Yes! Just to clarify, he was found alive and most reports state he was only treated for frostbite on his hands and a fracture. He survived on chocolate and chunks of ice for almost a week while descending Everest alone and injured.
Correction: Dawa Sherpa was the guide to a Polish climber, the British climber was another client of the company that Dawa Sherpa worked for. The Polish climber had frostbite and had run out of oxygen and the British climber descended with him. He claims he was not aware the guide was also in distress.
I don't even like AI, but for the love of ass, I really feel people are hating it for the sake of hating, vaguely parroting the actual problems to be a "good hater", than because they actually know the problem with AI. Because saying what the problems are, is different from actually knowing why and how they're problems.
Because some of the bullshit just sounds like "Technology! Burn the witch." And any mention of AI, even long time established form, such as "follower AI" in games, gets thrown in with the likes of GenAI and AI fed with scrapped art and writing from non-consenting individuals.
AI is a tool, it's how it's being used that's the problem. Not that it exists as a basic "idea." If AI was used and actually regulated in a way that didn't shaft artists, nature, writers, the environment, and who knows what, and was actually used as a basic tool, instead of a brain replacement, it'd be no more "offensive" than search engines replacing the massive deadweight phonebook, or having to find that one specific book in a library and finding that one little page with that one little piece of info you needed. (And yes, I know that did cause problems for some people.)
--
The current version of genAI is constantly presented as a brain replacement, or at least as capable of things it will inherently never be capable of, so some of the vitriol is understandable.
It would be nice if people understood the difference between automated video game functions and fancy autocomplete though.
Swarovski can continue to fuck off.
In 2021, Swarovski (the company that makes the very sparkly crystals you see in certain jewelry, on figure-skaters' twinkliest outfits, on red carpet dresses), decided they didn't want the grubby fingers of small-time jewelers, clothing designers and costumers and crafters on their shiny beads and rhinestones anymore. They decided to limit their sales to "luxury" and couture creators, not girls who sell stuff on Etsy. The tenor of their press release on the subject was snide and insulting. Resellers (like your favorite bead shop) would no longer be allowed to carry their product; the average Jane on the street would not be able to purchase them. You could only get them if you had an authorized business agreement that bound you to very strict brand behavior. And those of us who still had good stock of the crystals would no longer be "permitted" to use the brand's name in our listings for sale.
Every bead shop and craft supply place and many, many small clothing makers--wedding shops, prom and dancing dress suppliers, the sort of salt of the Earth mom and pop time machines of shops that are the backbone of the field--scrambled to find something that could replace them. The last of the stock dwindled quickly, all of us grabbing what we could get while there was any chance of it, and then it was gone and we no longer had any access.
I was Big Pissed about it at the time. It was just so goddamn stuck-up, when wholesalers and indie jewelers had made them so much money, when some people I knew--when *I!*--had been brand-loyal for decades. But with no recourse, everyone pivoted fairly quickly, most of us to Preciosa Crystals. Those are Czech, quite sparkly, and considerably less expensive than Swarovski. The faceting method they use is different, but not worse; any differences are hardly noticeable when you're seeing them as a hundred pinpoints of light.
Well, out of nowhere, Swarovski just dropped this: https://www.harmanbeads.com/swarovski-brand-policy-update
"Effective June 1, 2026, Swarovski updated the distribution and brand usage policies introduced in 2021. Businesses may now purchase Swarovski Crystals without signing a Brand Control Agreement, and Authorized Distribution Partners may once again sell Swarovski Crystals to resellers, including bead stores and online retailers. Businesses may also use the Swarovski brand name when following Swarovski’s Proper Use Guidelines. Designers, manufacturers, artists, brands, retailers, and resellers are now eligible to purchase Swarovski Crystals through authorized distribution channels."
They want us back. A lot of the companies who could have kept a brand relationship with them also have swapped to Preciosa, over the last half-decade, in solidarity with indie creators and out of a sour awareness that it could be them, next. And it doesn't hurt that Preciosa was able to expand their line quite a bit now that everyone who wanted sparkle had no choice but to go to them.
And I'm not seeing nearly anyone who intends to return. The feeling is, "Y'all told us to fuck off! Off we fucked! And now, that's what you can do, too!" I'm seeing a lot of "How many of us did you stab in the back?" comments from the people whose money they're hoping to attract.
And personally I'm sitting over here all rubby hands, mean snickering, because they really thought they were going to be able to outclimb the people who actually provided all their profits, and now here they are, hat in hand.
So one of the things that can apparently contribute to kidney issues in cats is if they eat too much dry food and don't drink enough water; cats are adapted to get a lot of their water from their food since they're originally desert animals, and might not get enough water if they don't eat wet food. Unfortunately, Dozy won't eat wet food no matter what; she categorically refuses to touch the stuff. So a few months ago, we were looking for ways to get Dozy more fluids, and my wife noticed at the pet store a cat drink--basically meat broth with some floaty bits in--that was low-protein and meant for cats with kidney issues. So we figured, worth a try, right?
Great news: she loved it. Super tasty apparently. Great success. Along with the kidney-sensitive treats we found, it was a nice way to supplement her diet. Unforseen long-term consequence though: she loved it so much she began demanding it throughout the day. Like, would come up to us and meow, and meow, and meow, and not stop, until we got up, went to the kitchen, and got her some cat drink.
And by doing so on demand, we have unfortunately created a monster: no matter what we are doing at home, Dozy knows that if she sits next to you and meows, 1) you know what she wants, and 2) you know that she will not stop until you get it for her now. And when you do get it, she gets extremely excited. She will bum rush the kitchen door as you enter. She will run around your feet as you open the can. She will let out the creakiest, crunchiest, most nails-on-the-chalkboard meow you've ever heard if she thinks you're not going fast enough.
I do not begrudge her this. It is gratifying to care for a creature whose most ardent desires are so simple that it is this easy to fulfill them. But I am a little sad, because I know in my heart that I have never loved any comestible as much as she loves this cat drink. She has a pleasure of a purity and intensity that I will never know.
[the creacher in question]
Father Strange, when considering the famous shoelaces code, do you interpret the president they were stolen from to be whichever US president is currently in office, or is it still Obama? I've held in my heart that it has been Obama this whole time
I also feel like The Shoelace President is Obama but I'm curious what Tumblr at large thinks
Who did you steal your shoelaces from?
Obama
Whoever is current US president
A non-US president (put in tags)
When Tess Morgan's son came home with a tattoo, she was griefstricken. She knew her reaction was OTT (he's 21) but it signalled a change in their relationship
This is gold this, absolute gold, the most over the top melodramatic hysterical ridiculous thing I’ve ever read
This is actually so interesting to read- it’s from 2012 but its full of the same anxieties, even some of the same phrasing that many of the guardian’s later pieces on transness use. really hammers home how much of the terfism that emerged in the late 10s was middle class mothers angry at a loss of control over their adult children- whether that be their bodies or their friends or their opinions- and making that everyone’s problem because they have the power to do so
He says, “I’m still the same person.”
I look at him, sitting there, my 21-year-old son. I feel I’m being interviewed for a job I don’t even want. I say, “But you’re not. You’re different. I will never look at you in the same way again. It’s a visceral feeling. Maybe because I’m your mother. All those years of looking after your body – taking you to the dentist and making you drink milk and worrying about green leafy vegetables and sunscreen and cancer from mobile phones. And then you let some stranger inject ink under your skin. To me, it seems like self-mutilation. If you’d lost your arm in a car accident, I would have understood. I would have done everything to make you feel better. But this – this is desecration. And I hate it.”
Also just the classism of her associating tattoos with “vest tops, dogs on chains, broken beer glasses”; like, just say you hate poor people
Defense Secretary Hegseth previously announced the change due to an "impractical" system.
Not great!
One might even venture that this is another step towards Christian Supremacy from the current administration
Can we stop acting like it matters whether the fucking global terrorists are respectful of their members religion or gender please? If we’re talking the US military, their Christian supremacist ideology isn’t in question, and what they’re doing to their targets is much more relevant…
It doesn't matter how evil the underlying institution is, there should be zero government jobs that discriminate, because if discrimination against us is legal then it becomes common.
While I don’t disagree with that statement, if we’re interested in any kind of liberation that goes beyond the borders of the usamerican empire, rallying behind “trans people should have the same right as any US citizen to go kill people abroad for money!” is not really a move, yknow?
there not a pathway to ending the horrid atrocities of the us military that starts with "trans people are banned from the military". do you think we're going to get every single group banned and then no-one will be part of the military, or do you think we will actually take power and change things? because if we do, it's going to be a long term project, and in the medium term "make it so local minorities aren't openly discriminated against" is an obvious goal that doesn't even cost us anything in the long-term
Leftists when the canary stops singing: Well, it shouldn't have been down the coal mine in the first place. In fact, none of us should be down here. Coal burning is a major contributor to climate change, and the particulate emissions cause health issues in minority communities.
Pitchfork time.
They say socialism is bad because their masters told them to believe it and they do so without question. They don't actually know what half the shit they say means. And when confronted, they just make shit up and call you a leftist puppet when you prove them wrong.
Honestly though, I'd rather be a leftist puppet then a pedo supporter. But what do I know? I'm just a Canadian that know more about American politics then the average Republican.
You know what they haven’t given us in the United States? EMS as an essential service everywhere in all 50 states. Wake up everyone! When it comes to public safety, we need more than just POLICE and Fire.
