Tips for a newbie fanfiction writer?
You canāt improve without writing.
Always have back up of your stuff.
Distraction-free software that helps you write do exist.
Pasting your text from google docs onto AO3 will make it look funny.
Thereās a scriptā that solves that problem.
Feedback (or the lack thereof) is never what you expect.
Learn to write for yourself in the first place.
Not everything you write will be the best fic everā¢.
You canāt control how people react to your stuff.
No self-deprecation. Seriously.
A good summary attracts people. (No āI suck at summariesā there!)
Punctuation and structure are so important.
Donāt be afraid of using a characterās name. Thatās why they have one.
Get a beta reader if you can.
Itās YOUR story and only you can tell it.
DO write that 9861th coffee shop AU for your fandom.
Anything is an AU.
Researching is good but donāt let it keep you from writing.
Tag your stuff accordingly.
Advice you see around arenāt supreme rules set in stone.
Youāll learn more about your style as you go.
Donāt compare your writing to othersā. Especially āfamousā fic writers.
Perfection doesnāt exist. Stop striving for it and just write.
A rough draft is better than NO story.

when i was a kid, all books containing queer content were banned, most likely across the entire school district. this was not an isolated incident at the time (mid-late 90s). as a kid who didnāt yet realize i was queer, i devoured any of these books i could find from outside sources.
one of the big ones āthink of the childrenā people were upset about was a little book called annie on my mind. the girls were in love, no doubt, but there was no sexual content. they held hands and might have kissed (itās been a long time since i read it), but absolutely nothing more than that.
and that was the greatest fear of adults. that kids might recognize themselves in girls who called themselves best friends but were also in love.
antis donāt remember how an attempt to āthink of the childrenā led to just another generation who didnāt know anything about gay people other than the super flamboyant dudes you saw on queer eye for the straight guy and will & grace. thatās where we were my entire childhood. tom hanks was allowed to be smart and capable in philadelphia, but he also had aids, the āgay cancer.ā
please donāt misunderstand me - iām not equating queer content with underage or non-con content. but censorship bleeds, just like all forms of authoritarianism does. today weāre censoring content we find abhorrent, like underage stories including romance or sex. and then they ban content about disability and/or mental illness, because children should be protected from uncomfortable content. and then they ban content that discusses racism or other types of oppression. and then they ban content about queer characters of any stripe because, well, queer people are all perverts. fahrenheit 451, which teaches that censorship is wrong, is still banned in many places. they continue to ban books like judy blumeās foreverā¦ which depicts teenagers discovering their sexuality.Ā

"How many kudos does my Fic needs for it to be considered 'good enough'?"
None, because that number in the kudos/comments/hits does not measure your effort or passion you have for your own writing.
Numbers do not define you.
There are so many factors that go into that number and many of them have nothing to do with your writing, which is a tough pill to swallow. I know, Iāve been there.Ā
It could be the popularity of the ship, the trope within a fandom, how large the fandom is or even how many fandom friends a particular writer has made. Maybe that fandom glorifies smut and you donāt feel comfortable writing it, or maybe you prefer an lgbt pairing in a fandom that isnāt open to it. There are so many reasons but in the end, none of them matter because they arenāt going to change how it makes you feel.
Itās really easy to get caught up in numbers or even engage in someĀ āfriendlyā competition with a writer you admire but the best thing to do is to understand early on that these numbers do not necessarily reflect your ability as a writer. Just let yourself write what you want, what makes you happy. The rest will hopefully come with time.
But even if it doesnāt, think about this. When you look back you wonāt remember how many kudos a particular story got as much as you will the experience of writing it. The parts that made you groan in frustration, or giggle or even cry. Thatās what youāll really get out of it!
So let yourself go and just enjoy the process of writing.

Not to like āgo hereā but tbh the phenomenon of internet fandom is a VERY clear symptom of our crumbling society lmao. Not even being a dick either but like. Huge swaths of people donāt just lose themselves in fantasy worlds with an intensity easily comparable to cult participation unless they are also grossly unequipped to face the actual world they live in. There is such obvious emotional displacement involved in fandom delusions ā of course the real reason theyāre so prevalent is that they allow for a growing number of maladjusted and emotionally stunted human beings to permanently escape their increasingly isolated, unfulfilling reality. Does there exist an ānotify when completedā button for AO3 fics? I strictly read completed works because my memory is bad enough that I forget everything about a fic between updates. There are some nice promising fics that I wish I could subscribe to get an email when theyāre completed because checking all the time if anything on my reading list has been completed is annoying. If that makes sense, hahah. thanks in advance!
Thereās no way to be notified only when a story is complete, but you canĀ subscribe to a story and get email updates as each chapter is posted. That email will let you know whether the story is completed or not. The subject line will tell you which chapter number it is, and when you click in youāll be notified of how many total chapters there are. If the numbers are the same, the work is complete.Ā
And, this is how fics die. Not meaning to be critical here. I understand the, wait until it is finished because you donāt know when the next update is coming, but if a fic you love isnāt being shown love during the process, it is likely that you wonāt ever get that ācompletedā notification. Just saying.
Okay. But. There are maybe three authors where I will even click on an unfinished fic (because I know they have a track record of finishing things), much less start reading. Knowing that it WILL be finished one way or another is 100% a prerequisite for me, because the feeling of not knowing how it ends is the worst feeling*?
So if I see ā4/?ā I am definitely nopeing the hell out of there, no way Iām wasting emotional energy on it. The few times Iāve ignored this rule for myself, Iāve regretted it. (I am mainly a reader, not a writer, but the one multi-chapter fic I wrote, I made sure to specify that I had finished it before posting and was going to post one chapter a week until [projected date.])
I actually really like the idea of a ānotify when finishedā button, it would save users a lot of time, energy and inbox space if they are like me and refuse to read unfinished stuff.
*not like, impacting my mental health in a bad way, just causing a large amount of frustration and irritation at myself, the internet, the author, and the universe in general.
I read unfinished fics that havenāt been updated in years. I read them all the way through and then leave as long a comment I can saying how I liked the fic and if they ever continue it Iāll be there in a heartbeat, I write that I hope life has been treating them well and even if they never return to writing that they are happy and have a good life. I have never gotten a response to one of these comments but I sincerely hope that some of these people are getting the email that I posted a comment and that it can brighten their day.
Most people who discontinue their fics do it because they lost all motivation for it, think no one cares, or something really big happened in their life that made them have to stop.
When it is incomplete it leaves it up to you to imagine all the ways it couldāve ended, which isnāt all that bad honestly. Also if you have short memory or read lots and lots of fics youāll probably forget about it anyways.
As for reading fics with long updates, I also have problems remembering. I go back and read the chapter before, if I still dont remember I go back another chapter. It takes more time but it allows you to read amazing fics and support the author as they take a lot of time out of their lives just to update.
New writing rule: Checkovās friend
If you introduce a named character with a relationship to a protagonist, their character arc must be resolved in a way that feels reasonable and satisfying
Which is to say: they canāt just dissappear when theyāre no longer a convenient plot device
Thorās Mum rule ā If youāre going to kill a character whoās carried any part of the plot, take a bit to reimagine the plot as if she were the main character, and the story ends when she dies.Ā If itās unsatisfying, rewrite either her plot points, or her death, to make both more meaningful.
Which is to say ā donāt treat side characters as ammo with which to hurt your main guy.Ā ESPECIALLY if theyāre women.

Me, as minor on the internet purposefully looking up adult porn content because nobody wants to tell me what the fuck sex is in real life: Wow, this awful view of sex that I'm getting from this one limited source surely must be because I'm looking at porn and not because I'm not being educated on what healthy sexual relationships actually look like.....AS A SIXTEEN YEAR OLD.
Yes, definitely the porn's fault and not the fact that society is so sex negative that discussing the topic in a neutral, let ALONE positive light, with anyone under 18 is somehow dangerous. Because fuck adequate sex education, amirite, there's not a single kid or teenager that feels sexual desire or is curious about their own bodies. We can ignore that, they don't need to know anything until they're 18/age of majority.
OH WAIT, they're getting BAD IDEAS from Porn? A Thing that is meant for Adults with a complete understanding of sex, consent, and bodily autonomy? Clearly the ONLY possible recourse here is to BAN AND STIGMATIZE sex and porn even MORE.
Because not telling kids about this stuff worked SO WELL with abstinence-only and sex-negative bare-bones education. Let's DOUBLE DOWN on that attitude! It's foolproof!!!

To be clear, Iāve watched Brooklyn 99 and enjoyed it. I was watching Elementary the other day. But even when I watch shows I like, I make a mental note every time a cop lies, breaks the law, subverts someoneās basic rights, or just generally acts like an asshole to the people the are meant to serve and protect.Ā
How often are they called out on their behavior? How often are they punished for it? How often is it reinforced as correct by the narrative?
When I tell people to be critical of the media they consume thatĀ is what I mean. Not simply calling it terrible and moving on, but actually engaging thoughtfully, asking questions, and forming conclusions about what that media is trying to say to you. ThenĀ decide whether you want to keep listening, or if it will be better for you in the long run to move on.
i really want to normalise the idea amongst lgbt youth that its okay to switch labels as you further understand your identity. youāre not a traitor or a fake if you realise youāre bi instead of a lesbian, or if youāre a trans woman instead of a gay man. itās really difficult and scary to be lgbt and itās doubly hard to deal with a shifting identity amongst all that soā¦ be kind to yourself. youāre learning and figuring yourself out and nothing is set in stone. let yourself figure out what feels most comfortable to you. and for those who are secure in their lgbt identities, particularly adults, donāt make kids feel bad for switching between labels. weāve all had identity crises in our lives, so provide support and understanding rather than unforgiving attitudes.
this post is not an excuse to jump on the āof course you canāt label yourself at a young ageā bandwagon either. young people who stick with and feel comfortable in an identity from an early age are just as valid as you are.
Additionally, on the other side of this - if you know someone who switches labels, itās also your job to not make them feel like a traitor or a fake. If youāre their friend or you say you support them, then be their friend and support them. If you donāt understand how they could say they were one thing however long ago and now itās something different, this is your chance to learn, not reject.
And if they later choose to go back to their original label, then they still werenāt faking it. Those were the feelings they had at the time.

The top is my homestate. Michigan. Armed protestors against the stay at home order shouting in the faces of police because they want their haircuts.
The bottom is yesterday. Minnesota. More exact, Minneapolis. Miles from where I live. Protestors sitting while police show up in riot gear as they rightfully protest and demand justice for the murder of George Floyd.
Iām not the least bit shocked. But seeing the stark contrast from two places Iāve called home is so disappointing and infuriating that the racist system we live in allows for this and thereās still people who will say the protestors in Minneapolis were wrong. Just... Iām so angry the āland of the freeā fails so many people. America was never the land of the free.
