i was reading lillian doherty's 'gender and internal audiences in the odyssey', and when looking at the gendered social rules of the (patriarchal, obviously) society the story takes place in, she writes how "[Penelope] -- and her female slaves, who would also be fair sexual game for Odysseus according to the cultural norm -- must remain completely celibate in his absence."

and i had to sit back for a moment and take it in, because man, i'd never fully considered that aspect of it. obviously odysseus is never implied to take sexual advantage of any of his slaves within the epic, but as master of his household he is meant to be in total control of his slaves' sexuality and bodies. their failure to remain celibate (whatever the circumstances...) in itself equals betrayal against his authority and against the household, acting outside their allotted station.

i think it's interesting how the first night odysseus is back at ithaca, disguised as a beggar, he lies down plotting the suitors' deaths the next day, but he is much more tempted by and fantasizes about rushing the slave women and killing them right then and there, because the sight of the suitors taking them to bed is making "his heart growl with rage". this is before the contest, before any battle. odysseus has already decided the slave women must die.

like yes, within the narrative and society of the odyssey the slave women are presented as undoubtedly and irredeemably guilty, and then when they are executed -- excruciatingly slowly -- for their misdeeds (contrasted to the suitors, who are all dealt quick deaths in combat) the text doesn't imply that that is an unjust decision at all. but i think in modernity we ought to consider what those twelve enslaved women (trapped for decades in a leaderless household where overly entitled young men are running wild) are meant to be guilty of.

and i understand that sometimes it's a very thin line between giving a realistic depiction of a serious topic and ending up in after-school special mode, but i also notice that no one is doing this when a character gets the flu (which kills many people every year) and PERSONALLY i don't love the patterns i'm vaguely sensing about which experiences can be depicted normally and which experiences must always be a learning opportunity

Something that really bugs me about The Odyssey is how the story was just not at all understood by Nolan or the actors.

Yes, I think we all understood his vision of the gods being natural occurrences, but I think this is just rubbish. What's the point of adapting a story old thousands of years old, with a completely different belief system that influenced characters of the said story and actions of REAL people as well, if you're not gonna be faithful to the original story?

Ancient Greeks envisioned their gods as people, and yes, they may not have been real, but The Odyssey as is helps us understand our ancestors and people in antiquity, who we can credit with the evolution of our societies today. Having Odyssey be almost atheistic in the movie defeats half of the plot. Not having Zeus or Poseidon show up in a human form, but having Athena, who is played by Zendaya, really badly at that, be present is ridiculous. And don’t get me started on the relationship between Odysseus and Athena, which is based on her guilt-tripping him???? He is supposed to be her best student, for whom she literally influences the plot.

Also, completely removing the "I am Nobody" part from the story genuinely kills his cunningness, strategic mind, and trickery that he is very much capable of in the poem. And how does Poseidon know who to curse and call misfortune upon if he doesn't know who Odysseus is??? Odysseus's name was basically the social security number of their times!!!

I also hated that they didn’t show sirens. Instead we get a minute-long video of Odysseus crying and wailing, accompanied by Matt Damon's horrible acting since the guy is just not Odysseus material.

This whole movie felt like one celebrity name here, another there, and a third one somewhere because they accounted that people will come watch the movie for the actors and not the story.

If you don't read books: Read a book. Read any book. Read a book you loved when you were a kid. Read a book that interests you now. Read an entire collection of poetry or essays and think about why the author or editor arranged those works in that order. Read an erotic novel. Read nonfiction. Read graphic novels or manga. Read a kids' chapter book or a YA novel. Read a book digitally. Read a book on paper. Read an audiobook and really focus on it - if you notice yourself spacing out, scroll back to the last words you remember and try listening again. Read any book. And then when you finish it, celebrate for a minute (get those endorphins going!) and then read another one.

If you read books: Try reading a book that intimidates you. Maybe it's thick. Maybe it uses archaic language. Maybe it's a book that was translated from a language you don't speak into a language you do speak. Maybe it's a genre you don't normally read. Maybe it's the same kind of book as always, but you put your phone away and really focus on reading for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. (I know I've been struggling with this.) What scares you about reading? What challenges have you been avoiding? Try getting out of your comfort zone just a tiny bit, celebrate for a minute, and then try again.

tbh this conversation has been had before about genshin but this applies to arknights too but like. literally any time the question of "why are characters that are supposed to be dark skinned so white" pops up with chinese games the answer is always chinese colourism. its such a big part of chinese beauty standards with the association of dark skin with working class manual labourers and pale skin with wealth and education because of the history of social classes in china. so characters who are meant to come across as beautiful or handsome and refined are almost always going to be pale skinned, and the dark skinned characters are usually brawns over brains

obv this colourism feeds into racism, because of the association of pale skin with intelligence and wealth, and of dark skin with manual labour and the working class. its not uncommon for chinese people to hold this view about others, both in and out of the sinosphere. so like, yeah, this is a societal problem in chinese culture, and i kinda wish conversations about its reflection in chinese mobile games addressed it more often, cause it feels like its never brought up
