I absolutely blame Facebook for this shift. Words cannot describe how freaking WEIRD it was in the mid-00s when there was suddenly this popular website where you were required to use your real, brickspace name and encouraged to post photos of yourself. Every single bit of Standard Internet Safety prior to then said that you should never ever ever do either of those.

Oooh since I already speak spanish and english I would love to get:

Náhuatl, since it is the most spoken native language in my country.

Yoreme since it's the native language spoken in my home state.

Japanese so I can watch anime without subtitles.

Mandarin because it's a complex tonal language, and I just feel that would completely rewire my availability to learn language.

And either russian because so many research papers are in that language or Korean so I would get kpop lyrics (tho I'm falling off of the only group I like so, probs the first one)

The fact developers are continuously foaming at the mouth to destroy them and put a strip mall up in their place should make you even more determined to help maintain them. In urban areas, they are a haven for wildlife. They are a green space. If you are too afraid of death to utilize them for that purpose, that is on you.
