Back
I'm back, for the people that care to know! ~Nox
Yahoo says its revenue fell 19 per cent from a year earlier, while its loss widened to $440 million. Yahoo also reported Monday that it's writing down $482 million in charges related to the declining value of Tumblr.
I FUCKING KNEW IT.
SO. IF YOU KNOW YOUR FANDOM HISTORY, YOU CAN SEE THE WRITING ON THE WALL RIGHT NOW.
AND IN CASE YOU DONâT, I will tell you a story.
I donât know if Yahoo as a corporate entity hates fandom, or if it LOVES fandom in the way a flame longs to wrap its embrace around a forest. Or maybe itâs just that fandom is an enticingly big and active userbase; but just by the nature of our enterprise, we are extremely difficult to monetize.
It doesnât matter.
Once upon a time - in the era before anyone had heard of google - if you wanted to post fandom (or really, ANY) content, you made your own webpage out of nested frames and midi files. And you hosted it on GeoCities.
GeoCities was free and⊠there. If the internet of today is facebook and tumblr and twitter, the internet of the late 90s WAS GeoCities.
And then Yahoo bought GeoCities for way too much money and immediately made some, letâs say, User Outreach Errors. And anyway, the internet was getting more varied all the time, fandom mostly moved on - it wasnât painful. GeoCities was free hosting, not a community space - but the 90s/early 00s internet was still there, preserved as if in amber, at GeoCities.com.
Until 2009, when Yahoo killed it. 15 years of early-internet history - a monument to humanityâs masses first testing the potential of the internet, and realizing they could build anything they wanted⊠And what they wanted to build was shines to Angel from BtVS with 20 pages of pictures that were too big to wait for on a 56k modem, interspersed with MS Word clipart and paragraphs of REALLY BIG flashing fushia letters that scrolled L to R across the page. And also your cursor would become a different MS Word clipart, with sparkles.
(So basically nothing has changed, except you donât have to personally hardcode every entry in your tumblr anymore. Progress!)
And it was all wiped out, just like that. Gone. (except on the wayback machine, an important project, but they didnât get everything) The weight of that loss still hurts. The sheer magnitudeâŠ
Imagine a library stocked with hundreds of thousands of personal journals, letters, family photographs, eulogies, novels, etc. dated from a revolutionary period in history, and each one its only copy. And then one day, its librarians become tired of maintaining it, so they set the library and all its contents on fire.
And watch as the flames take everything.
Brush the ash from their hands.
Walk away.
Once upon a time - in the era after everyone had heard of google, but still mostly believed them about âDonât be evilâ - fandom had a pretty great collective memory. If someone posted a good fic, or meta, or art, or conversation relevant to your interests? Anywhere? (This was before the AO3, after all.) You could know p much as soon - or as many years late - as you wanted to.
Because there was a tagging site - del.icio.us - that fandom-as-a-whole used; it was simple, functional, free, and there. Yahoo bought it in 2005. Yahoo announced they were closing it in 2010.
They ended up selling it instead, but not all the data went with it - many users didnât opt to the migration. And even then, the new version was busted. Basically unusable for fannish searching or tagging purposes. This is the lure and the danger of centralization, I guess.
It is like fandom suffered - collectively - a brain injury. Memories are irrevocably lost, or else they are not retrievable without struggle. New ones arenât getting formed. There is no consensus replacement.
We have never yet recovered.
Once upon a time⊠Yahoo bought tumblr.
I donât know how you celebrated the event, but I spent it backing up as much as I could, because Yahooâs hobby is collecting the platforms that fandom relies on and destroying them.
I do not think Yahoo is âbadâ - I am criticizing them on their own site, after all, and I donât expect any retribution. I genuinely hope they sort out their difficulties.
But they are, historically, bad for US.
And right now is a good time to look at what youâve accumulated during your career on this platform, and start deciding what you want to pack and what can be left behind to become ruins. And ash.
âŠOn a cheerier note, wherever we settle next will probably be much better! This was never a good place to build a city.
My response to this will be to back up all of my Tumblr entries (all 10k of them) onto Dreamwidth, which IS fandom-run and fandom-friendly, just so I donât lose anything when the inevitable happens.
I know DWÂ has never quite been accepted as a communityâwhich I donât understand at all, it has the flex and love that Livejournal abandoned over ten years agoâbut hey, better than nothing.
Yahoo also bought and then slowly destroyed Flickr. I WILL say it: Yahoo is bad, they make bad, greedy decisions like the users of people which they are, and the only reason they havenât fallen is that they made one good choice and bought a shitload of Alibaba stock before it hit big. Yahoo doesnât make significant money off its platforms; it makes more money as a single-stock hedge fund than it does as a dot com. Thatâs how bad they are at making anything work in an even remotely functional way.
@pillowfort-io look out weâre about to show up on your doorstep carrying our canons and our smaller fellow fans on our backs. :D
At least this time we have AO3 for most of the fanworks. If your shit isnât on AO3 or backed up somewhere off Tumblr, guys, nowâs the time.
Ref this: Iâm going to make off-line copies of any longer posts Iâd hate to lose. Itâs annoying enough to have to use Recovery apps on a crashed drive at home; much worse if the âdriveâ has ceased to exist.
Saplings, I remember back when Yahoo was Yahoo! and they have always, always wanted to be Google - or at least, that level of Big Internet Beast.  So they buy what they think are fledgling Internet commercial properties that can be turned into MEGA CASH MONEY and have no understanding of fandoms, which are not precisely the same as other online communities (is Facebook a âcommunityâ as such?)
Iâve been through this before with LiveJournal, and even though I am on Dreamwidth and itâs pretty good, it never really recreated the same sense of community - too many people were scattered, groups broke up, the momentum was lost.
Iâd hate to see Tumblr go the same way, but the straws in the wind are pointing to it. Â Iâm not hugely thrilled about AO3 because I think they have their own problems, but the one thing vaguely hopeful is that some platform will come along (the same way Tumblr did) and we can find our way back.
I just want to remind you all that AO3 is still in Beta. It'll get better. As a matter of fact, they recently added bios and profile pictures.
So yeah, while it isn't perfect, it is still improving.
Please note that I'm not getting defensive of AO3. It doesn't back up works, (I lost half a chapter, around 1000 words), and it has some glitches. But it is by far the bet fanfiction/fanwork outlet.
Now, if Yahoo bought Tumlr (no matter how long ago or how recently)... It is time to start backing everything up.
I truly don't want to see this site go, but, as said above, it is likely to happen.
I'll begin my backup. Fortunately, I don't have a lot of things on here.

Hey Tumblr and the Internet!
Guess what? Youâre literally fighting over who a complete stranger does or doesnât have sex with. And you know what? Thatâs pretty fucking petty.
Guess what? Nobody cares what you think. Aces donât care what you think. Aros donât either. Hell, I bet half of the acenegatives donât care.
Your opinion? Itâs the equivalent of the opinion of the person that does my hair. As in, unimportant, unnecessary, and completely, 100% unwanted.
Oh, that person who Iâve never met doesnât want sex? I MUST SHOW THEM THE ERROR OF THEIR WAYS VIA INTERNET! Oh, that person, who I have no idea what their name is, let alone personality, doesnât feel romantic attraction? I. HAVE TO. TELL THEM THAT THEY ARENâT VALID VIA INTERNET
OH MY, A PERSON WHO DOESNâT FEEL EITHER? THEY. MUST. HEAR. HOW. THEY. ARE ROBOTS, LESS THAN HUMAN, AND WILL NEVER HAVE LOVE!!
GUESS WHAT, FUCKERS? WE KNOW. THANKS FOR THE REMINDER.
BUT DO WE CARE ABOUT YOUR OPINION? DO WE CARE IF YOU DONâT UNDERSTAND?
NO. YOU HAVE THE INTERNET FOR A FUCKING REASON. USE IT.
IF YOU DONâT UNDERSTAND, SHUT UP, DO SOME RESEARCH, AND THEN WEâLL BE HAPPY TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.
You look like squabbling, immature children who donât want to share your toys.
To the LGBT+ community: I agree, we should have an independent movement. And we do. But itâs shot down at every turn.
Newsflash: people give up after so long. Itâs human nature to avoid dangerous situations.
Iâm just sad that the Asexual movement has become a dangerous situation.
We arenât asking much. You donât even have to add us to the acronym.
Just please, please donât snuff us all out. We are a candle thatâs growing dimmer by the minute and you blowing on it isnât helping.
I want to see us grow into a bright, illuminating flame thatâs strong enough to light a page.
Youâre the fire growing, ever-growing in the hearth in the living room, and we are over here on the desk in the drawing room, a tiny candle flame with barely enough light to illuminate the candle holder.
If we die, our small light dies with us.
And Iâm still scared of the dark.
Even if my name says otherwise.

whats with this like embarrassing poetry and âthe moon has fleshâ sort of navy seal copypasta wording. acephobia isnt real

HAPPY MOTHERFUCKING FOURTH OF JULY!
HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY EVERONE!
grumbling and moaning from the audience
Oh, shush. Not my fault it's 12 thirty.
Well, HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY to the Tumblrs in the United States.
Haha bitches, I'm first! (At least as far as I can see)
Well. Hope y'all have a good day! I'll be doing a cookout with the family and stuffs, so I won't be on. Probably.
Anyway, goodnight (bc it's 12:24 where I am) and have a good day today!
~Nox (Who hasn't slept since 9 yesterday morning and is heading to bed)
People seriously donât know who Beck is? Did they not have a television or a radio in the 90s? This generation is so fucking sad. All people know or care about is Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift and all that basic Top 40 stuff. Like yâall canât even pick up a music magazine orâŠ
yeah and some people arenât even aware of Györstöc FerentzbĂŒr the greatest austro-hungarian accordion player of the 1860âs like this generation is a pile of trash
That's sarcasm, right? I can use it, but I can't point it out... (coughthatswhatAspergersdoescough) But yeah. Honestly, I wasn't even *alive* in the 90's So yeah. I don't know who Beck is. So what? I bet you don't know who cut your hair in the 90's. And? Last I checked, not knowing because you weren't born yet (the definition of this generation is generally anything from '95ânow, though that's incorrect in my mind. It should be 2000ânow.) isn't a crime or a sin. Neither is not caring. Sorry I'm not sorry. ... Actually, no, I'm not.

How about... I'm not cishet?
I mean, I'm an agender asexual. That's pretty far from cishet, if you ask me.
"Even cis aroace people have straight privilege."

Punctuation Matters by The Visual Communication Guy
Iâll never understand writers who donât care about punctuation. It adds control, Â clarity, meaning, and variety.Â
Loool letâs eat grandma. XD
I learned to use the Oxford comma loooong before I knew it even had a term, so Iâve been conditioned to never forget about it.
But stupid fact: Journalists, or Canadian journalists using CP style, are taught to NOT use the Oxford comma. Why? I dunno. But it SUCKS.
Example:
A journalist would write âSkippy the dog, Sally Farhqwha and JonathanâŠâ
instead of the much preferred
âSkippy the dog, Sally Farhqwha, and JohnathanâŠâ
Itâs terrible for everyone. Actual torture.
Hey everyone! I am a writer that believes in punctuation!

(Iâd like to note that this is okay to republish)
didnât want to have to out myself as a survivor on this hell website, but the Acecourseâą is back and im fucking done.
Two years ago, someone had an unrequited crush on me. This was before i was out as trans and i had long hair and wore leggings a lot and was âedgyâ â just an average teen âgirlâ.
See, I was so fucking aro it hurt. I was also unapologetically asexual. Do you see where this is going? Long story short, a guy liked me, found out i was ace/aro, and immediately tried to âturn me straightâ (those exact words).
It wasnât much at first, just p hecking annoying, getting up in my space and teasing me, but this escalated to pulling me into his lap, grabbing me around the hips/neck because i have severe tics when iâm touched there, etc.
That thing where you make peace signs with both hands and jam them into peopleâs sides was his favorite thing for like two months. He stole my books and ruined them before throwing them at me in the middle of class. Shoved me out of chairs more than a few times. He would ridicule my stutter while i did oral presentations in class.
Everytime he would email me and say âthis wouldnât happen if you admitted you liked me. You fucking pretentious bitch, stop being a prude. Youâre straight. I made you straight.â No homophobic slurs or anything, he knew what ace/aro meant and thatâs why he hated me.
There was a point where he would grab my hips and grind his dick into my ass whenever i tried to use the water fountain at school.
Iâm partially nonverbal, so telling a teacher or adult what was going on was basically impossible, because it would involve coming out to my mom or them, which i didnât want to do bc iâve had bad experiences coming out (obviouslyâŠ) but eventually i found the spoons and did it.
And you know what? Not a single thing happened. I was told to suck it up and give him a chance.
It still didnât stop until the year later when my mom took it to the principle and finally got what would be called a school-wide restraining order so he wasnât able to talk to me anymore (he still found my things whenever i left them in any class ever and ruined them, leaving them in the same place so iâd see them).
So yeah. It wasnât âhomophobia based aphobiaâ or some shit. It was pure, disgusting hatred that caused the majority of my current anxiety and mental health problems, and it was only because iâm ace and aro. Because I wasnât straight enough for straight people, but im still not queer enough for gay people. So if you dare to say that a people are âbasically straightâ or donât face anything like homophobia, eat my fucking ass.
This is so important, and youâd better have read the whole thing.
Of course I read the whole thing! So sad that this (the post) was even necessary.
Hey, Tumblr and the Internet! Stop acting like stupid children. You look like a fool.
What gets me is that nobody, nobody actually gets the irony here.
~Nox
Sometimes I wish my uterus knew I was ace and sex repulsed and don't want to ever be pregnant so it would stop preparing for a baby that is never coming every month!

Gods.
Important scientific study: most bisexuals, when they realize their sexuality, are heralded by a heavenly chorus singing NSYNCâs âBye Bye Byeâ.  However, no research has yet been conducted on the equivalent experiences of asexuals and aromantics.  If you could share your musical experiences as related to your realization of orientation, it would be a great gift to Science and our research.
