My followers know I hate talking about politics and current events, and generally refuse to do so, but this is important.

A bill has been introduced in the US that would make all pornography a federal crime. Owning it. Creating it. Distributing it.

Under this law, fanart of nude characters would be a federal crime.

Under this law, depictions of homosexuality or simply being transgender, would be considered pornography and a federal crime.

This bill is not going to pass.

However, the reason for this bill is to continue to push the "overton window". The reason for this bill is to make banning pornography seem more and more normal to everyone until they can actually do that.

And remember, they consider depictions of gay characters and transgenders characters "pornography" in any context, including platonic.

They have been working on this for a decade now and it has been working.

If you are one of the people in fandom who thinks that "nasty" porn on AO3 should be banned because it's "icky" or "immoral", then this mental scam is working on you.

Censorship is never about protecting people.

Censorship is always about control.

Do not let the rising moral panic affect your mind and make you weak to propaganda that lets others control you and control what you watch and read.

Do not fall for the scam.

When they say they are going to ban "pornography" it means they're going to ban anything they don't like by calling it "pornography" and they don't like you!!

We need to defend problematic porn because adults should have the ability to engage with problematic porn if they so choose. I, as an adult, should be able to look up and engage with whatever "problematic" content I want to, without government interference. If I want to read or watch something "gross" that someone else created so I could engage with it, OR create something "gross" for other adults to engage with, then I SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO THAT WITHOUT GIVING ANY GOVERNMENT ENTITY MY ID.

That doesn't mean I'm a fan of all content that could be considered "obscene" or "disgusting." I don't think anyone should be forced to engage with things they aren't interested in. Just like saying adults should be able to have a choice about drinking alcohol doesn't mean I support pouring alcohol down the throats of people who are sober. IN FACT, I'm a big fan of encouraging people to block and avoid things that trigger or squick them.

But that's an individual choice, not a government (or corporation!) choice.

And I know it's uncomfortable. There are things I don't engage with because I, personally, cannot handle it. There are subjects and themes and kinks I absolutely feel disgusted by. Things that will not only turn me off, but absolutely make me feel sick to my stomach.

However, disgust cannot be the center of my understanding of morality. So if there is pornographic material that does not materially harm someone, I will not advocate for its censorship. I will block it. I will critique it. I will scrunch my nose and and grimace and maybe even say "yuck." I will personally not engage with people who post that material, and I will loudly call for them to use effective tagging to help people avoid squicks and triggers.

There is nothing that meets the terms of service of this website that would make me feel comfortable with any government or payment processing entity requiring identification to access. And there is nothing worth risking the slippery slope of censorship.

Huh, it's almost like society, both socially and financially, is set up to specifically benefit people who have monogamous relationships and get married and punish people who don't partner or get married. It's almost like there are financial benefits that exist specifically to incentivize people to get married and have kids and be a nuclear family. It's almost like it was very culturally normal until very very very recently to just not have any deeper platonic relationships after you get married, meaning that single people past a certain age just get left behind and get treated as spinsters or loser bachelors. It's like life just is not designed for single people to be able to easily participate and survive while still being single. Huh, very weird. I'm sure marriage will fix this.
