One thing the movie does exceptionally well is showing the progression of time. How the Hail Mary becomes more familiar, how a scary and cold place shapes up to be a home. The lights get progressively warmer, and the place becomes more lived in. Grace makes his own modifications to try and accommodate it to his needs, and once Rocky arrives and his presence changes the interior of the ship… First, it's just a sleeping bunk, then later, the entire ship is full of his little tunnels. When they set off on their journey to Tau Ceti E, Rocky's ball is strapped to the pilot chair. When they are collecting the sample, Rocky is still inside his ball. But later, when Grace is practicing for the fishing around Adrian, Rocky already has a proper habitat set up in the cockpit, with his very own chair.
This mission took them many months to complete, I believe. These things took time to build. Grace learning to pilot the ship took long enough for Rocky to make the cockpit more habitable for himself. These small, gradual changes didn't just happen overnight. And I didn't even talk about their vocab growing and language and cultural barriers shrinking.

Me: hmmm you know Ive been considering changing my name for years but I haven’t found a name that fits me yet
Ryland Grace: -suddenly exists-
Me: oh
Imagine Grace defined his name as the elegance definition of grace and Rocky spends years thinking how fucking ironic this clumsy leaky space blobs name is.
Until Grace slips out a sentence along the lines of "could you give me a little grace here" and Rocky immediately points out he used a word wrong so Grace has to explain that yeah, grace means elegance but it can also mean mercy sometimes too.
And Rocky has to suddenly reconcile that the clumsy leaky blob that saved his life twice, that almost certainly doomed himself to come back for him, name is Mercy.
grace wakes up out of his coma and immediately puts on a skirt and starts exclusively going by his very feminine last name. he said if i’m stranded alone in space i’m gonna have some fun with gender.
thought of this immediately and was delighted to discover it’s the same op
FINALLYYYY finished some art for Project Hail Mary. New favourite movie. Biblical experience. I didn't know we were allowed live action whimsical cosmic hope with the power of friendship in 2026
this is my favorite comic ever i never don’t want to see it on my dash
[part 1] rocky learns about the Denmark incident :]
basically, i think the general rule of thumb is: if someone REALLY wants the blood that’s inside of your body, and they’re like… a vampire, or a dracula, or some sort of mansquito, then that’s probably okay. a dracula and a mansquito are made for removing things like blood and swords from inside your body. that’s basically fine.
if something wants to get at your blood, and they’re, say, some kind of murdersaurus, or maybe a really big frog, that’s where the problems start to arise. a really frog is not made for removing blood, and your blood knows this, which is why it is so vehement about wanting to stay IN your body instead of coming out.
unfortunately this will not deter a really big frog, because a really big frog is full of things like prizes, and value, and quite a lot of hatred, and it would REALLY rather like to replace any and all of those things with your blood, and basically by any means possible.
These words scan with a fantastic degree of confidence considering that together they make no sense at all
everyone is concerned about ryan gosling learning about bloodymary, but he would probably just go "wow that's insane, it's amazing that people saw the parallels between these two stories and created an entire new universe through collective fan work to explore those themes" or something, the real concern should be andy weir
Sometimes at random moments I’ll just sing “Gavin or google google or Gavin which one said it let’s find out HEY”
since a lot of people are confused who i’ve been talking about i wanted to explain! this is james ortiz, rocky’s lead puppeteer & voice actor! here is a random selection of photos from google images:
he stepped up to live voice rocky on the spot (he and ryan gosling improvised a large portion of the scenes) before being chosen to be rocky’s final voice. he also did the scary & sexy voices they test out, and he has a cameo in the film as the tv interviewer:
he’s italian & puerto rican and openly gay. here he is with rocky himself:
I WANNA THROW HIM IN A BOX AND SHAKE IT I LOVE HIM SO MUCH
Hey Project Hail Mary fans! Do you like watching James Ortiz say words without a face? Would you like to watch him (mostly) not say words, with a face? And eventually with a really cool puppet that he designed? And there are more really cool puppets that he designed? And also sometimes when he does say words, he sings them? Then consider: The Woodsman!
The Woodsman is the backstory of the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz, told through a mostly-wordless play set to music. Ortiz wrote and co-directed along with designing the puppets and starring. It's a really gorgeous piece, a dark fairy tale with a sad but hopeful ending - and a very sweet, awkward romance along the way.
Luckily, the Off-Broadway production was filmed! You can see it on BroadwayHD/Amazon, or as a screen recording on YouTube:
The Woodsman wouldn't be Ortiz's last time taking inspiration from Oz - according to this Playbill.com interview, Tik-Tok in Return to Oz was one of his influences for Rocky's voice.
In conclusion, go watch The Woodsman! It's one of the best things I've ever seen onstage! Also go read that Playbill interview, I am now dying to see the production described in the first paragraph.
