Between the heat wave and Mercury's opera, its been a bit of a challenge finding "time" to *sit-still and finish this frame. A quick texturing and color pass (test) before final detailing begins. I need a little more of Sanaa Bae'than and that beautiful bone structure of hers in my Sci-Fi life, for 2019 (beyond). She was 15 years ahead of the curve with her leading turn in AVP (2004). While everyone else in the movie went out in a hail of bullets and lasers; her character persevered with intuition, benelovence and grace. Dont see much of those "virtues" in today's movies. Easily one of the best "Alien" movies out of the entire franchise (I'd rank it #3). Seeing it again last night after so many years, I appreciate the film more (compared to the cinematic garbage shoveled out these days). Definitely wouldn't have minded a sequel with Sanaa's character reprised as an initiated matriarch with an expertise in "Alien Combat" & "Extraterrestial language". Why not 😊. Anyways, I've got a few galactic space operas on the stove. I'll see what I can make it do for 2019. Will be a very busy year. I hope that busyness spills into my creative flow here. Nakia 2020 "Don't Come For Me" (concept redesign) There are so many peaks and valleys from concept, sketch, to finish . Plenty of opportunities to justifiably quit, abandon a painting long before its finished (any "life-excuse" will do, really). That alone makes it all the more satisfying to see a paintings to its completion. The paintings become more then what I initially envisioned. But not without suffering. Not without its doubts. Lighting was a challenge (could be better). These paintings always ends up being an exercise in courage. Vision. ...lest I leave it for someone else to realize my visions for me. -NoNever This one took about 15+ hours (too long) total, to finish. Most of it was spent on the idiosyncratic detail of Nakia's Dora Milaje costume and armor. Wearing the gold class armor, Nakia has obviously been promoted to "General" status in the near future of an alternate Marvel Universe reality (work with me). I referenced Anthony Francisco's original costume design as an outline, and made reinforced modifications (to Armor) and subtractions to repeating design patterns. I've taken Nakia's metal blades and augmented their look to "light sabre". Nothing against the original metal concept design of her weapons. To me #lightsabre is just a little more interesting to paint :) . Anyway, moving on to the next. Playing with shapes and porportions ( i clearly need more playing). My geometry and forms are a bit off (right brain/left brain cooperative hiccups). Practice and relaxation (repeat- repeat- repeat.) are the only cure . There was no paticular plan in character discovery, just put the some graphite strokes together and waited to see what faces showed up (some elves, oracles, queens, and extraordinary mortals).
