clarissa had been practicing for mash up day all week, she felt like she could barely feel her feet at this point. when she heard her dad's glee club had been attending this year's sectionals however, she knew she had to step it up, especially since she hated seeing her dad disappointed. it was almost as if she telepathically called her parents when she heard her phone ring, quickly turning off the music once she saw it was them. "hey.. uh perfect timing, as always. let me show you guys something i need your opinion on." she replied, answering the call before then turning the music back on before then showing them her routine. "so, what do you think?" she asked them, trying to catch her breath a bit, not realizing there had been someone standing in the doorway until she turned around. "jesus, how long have you been standing there?"

when lore joined new directions, it hadn't been with any desire for the spotlight. she liked singing well enough, and dancing was... okay, especially when it was a basic grapevine or jazz square. but for the most part, she'd wanted to fade into the background, play a supporting role. now decently well into her collegiate show choir career, she'd yet to even have anything close to a solo moment - much to her preference.
enter: mashups. an anxiety-inducing duet with a randomized partner performed in front of the whole (suddenly very large!) group. likely with more of a solo opportunity than she'd had since... her audition.
yay?
it was therefore with a fair amount of apprehension that lore arranged her meetup with clarissa for that afternoon, the choir room finally free to work out what they could possibly perform.
"so..." she began after she realized she'd let silence linger for a beat too long after a basic exchange of pleasantries. "maybe we start with artists we like to narrow down some songs we could mash up? who are some of your favorites?"
clarissa had been apart of the new directions since freshman year, so she considered herself a bit of a vet in that sense. she had been singing ever since she could remember and her mom had put her in dance class since she could practically walk, so she was a bit of a pro, although she tried her best not to brag about it too much.
to say she wasn't nervous would be an understatement, although she was better at hiding it than others were, especially with her dad being a pretty well-known music director back home.
she was glad she was paired with someone somewhat on her level or else she was going to have to talk to stella, the leader of the new directions, as well as her roommate.
"no, yeah, that's a good starting point." she reassured the other with a smile. "i really like sabrina carpenter, one direction, olivia rodrigo, five seconds of summer, paramore, panic at the disco, and gracie abrams. what about you?"
🎸 ˚ ﹕ㅤㅤ hollis exhaled a sound settling somewhere between amusement and exhaustion, tilting his head to get a better look at the other man. one of those glee club freaks, but if the gall to throw the lighthearted insult back in his face was any indication, then he must already be exponentially more fun as the others. " yeah, yeah, but i'm still pretty even when i look like shit, " he corrected, flashing a half-smile as he tilted his slushie in theo's direction, almost like he was offering beer instead of frozen clumps of #flavoredsugar. " that doesn't really answer the question, does it? " he clicked his tongue, looking at theo as if he wanted to pry his mind open. " i mean, there's gotta be a reason why you can't. got a girl running in your head? or maybe that's exactly what you're looking for out here, on the prowl for a late night hookup. " hollis spoke nonchalantly as if he was assessing, appraising theo's vibes, then humming at the idea before bursting in a small bout of laughter to clue in the other that he was mostly joking. " but me? can't sleep 'cause of your club's shenanigans. got sent a bunch of arrangements i have to learn the bassline for, and now it's all i can hear in my head. "
theo couldn't help but laugh at the other's words, he was lying if he had said he didn't agree. he wasn't about to admit that though, he still thought he himself was the prettiest one on campus after all. " agree to disagree, dude. " he reassured the other before then taking a sip from the other's slushy and then handing it back to him.
" doesn't it? " he asked, not really expecting an answer. " okay, you caught me, i'm here waiting for the cinderella to my prince charming. " he teased, although it was kind of true at the same time. this is what happens when he refuses to get a pretty girl's number he met in class and can't quite put a face to a name. " can't say that's entirely my fault, man, i've only been with them for like a year. wouldn't exactly call it my club in that sense. "

as she pushed the door open, valeria already had one hand lifted in apology. she slipped inside with her bag still hanging from one shoulder, a little out of breath but somehow still put together, with the faint smell of whatever body spray had survived cheerios practice. “ sorry! did you wait long? cheer ran over because apparently stretching takes forty minutes now, which feels illegal but very good for my calves. ” it was their first time being paired together, so valeria was still deciding what kind of partner theodore would be. hopefully not the scary organized kind who took glee assignments too seriously. she had joined new directions because of a fleeting infatuation initially, which was maybe not the best reason in the world, but she had stayed because it was supposed to be fun! she set her bag down, smoothing one hand over her top before giving him her full attention, bright smile already returning. “ okay. hi. so where do we start? ”
being a hockey guy, theo was known for showing up to practice pretty early, especially when he didn't have practice until later, so it was no surprise to many to see the young man in the choir room so early. " nah, it's fine. i got here like five minutes ago, i think? " he reassured the other, although he truly wasn't counting the time. " i guess we just find what sound fits us best first or do we pick what song to do right away? i don't know, i'm still pretty new to this. "
for a moment, all stella could do was stare at theo, taken aback. he was new to the new directions, and she'd been specifically advised not to scare anyone off, but... listening was an important skill when you were in a show choir, and yet he hadn't heard the assignment?
"you and your partner - who is valeria, by the way - decide which songs you're combining together. you're each meant to pick a song that represents you in some way," she reiterated, hoping that his seemingly genuine interest in that moment would translate to a decent performance down the line.
alas, her tolerance for for being misunderstood was low that afternoon, so the moment that theo took non-performance related activities to mean something sexual, she was harsh with her immediate shut down.
"no! why is that people's first thought?" she demanded. "people don't hook up in there. but even if they did, i know with absolute certainty that i would not. and there is no void. i was talking about the student investment club, or the escape room society, or one of a number of other student organizations looking for somewhere new to meet."
"oh.. i knew that." he admitted, although he was lying through his teeth. truthfully, he only signed up for the new directions to check out girls since he heard most of them were surprisingly good looking, so it was nice that he was paired with someone who was easy on the eyes.
"wouldn't that be your first thought too if someone told you what you just said to me, princess?" he asked, chuckling a bit. "don't get your panties all in a twist, i'll be on my best behavior though."
" i could pretend i didn't care but i'd be lying. " she shrugs, grinning. this is how she lives. how she makes her living at that. " besides, it looks cute. i love the cups here. " and frankly, it's an easy post for later. up the saturation a little, then throw it up with a song or something. no time setting up a shot.
" i love a bagel for breakfast. probably one of my favorite things to have for breakfast actually. " she says with a smile. " if i cared what everyone else thought too much i'd probably be holed up in my room listening to b sides. " and it's a mixed bag- in truth. she won't get in her feelings. " i liked the reading for philosophy this week. have you gotten into it yet?"
" no, i get that, happens to the best of us. " she admitted, although for her it was more sports related than social media related. " they are pretty cute, i guess. " she admitted with a small chuckle.
" they are so good, right? most people judge me because it'll give me morning breath or whatever, but fuck what they think, am i right? " she replied, digging into her breakfast nonetheless. " haven't had the time, been busy with practice, but if you liked it, i'm sure it's pretty damn good then. "
the girl could have no intention of telling anyone anything, but that didn't mean information didn't have it's way of getting back to coach steele. so it was just in goldie's best interest to cover all the bases. "i mean yea... my sunday's are pretty much free. but there are lots of rules in place, and i can't slack on them, ya know?" she smiled sheepishly as she looked at her treat. "but thanks for not telling anyone. i appreciate it." goldie quickly licked a bit of frosting off her thumb. "you ever have a super intense coach or teacher or whatever?"
nadia was glad she wasn't a cheerleader, she wasn't sure she could handle all the pressure from coach steele. i mean, sure, she was tougher than most girls she knew, but even she had feelings. "that sounds rough, man. i mean, you're cheerleaders, not fucking soldiers." she admitted with a small chuckle at her own jokes. "no problem, it's nobody's business anyway." she admitted with a shrug. "not really, most of my coaches are pretty chill, although it took me a while to convince the men i can do anything a man can do, but who hasn't?"

the blender bottle filled with the world’s powderiest protein shake is slammed on the piano in the choir room. a piece of sheet music gets caught in the breeze and carter sees it as a sign from the gleek gods to flee. and honestly, he’d lost count of how many times he had been lectured about rearranging the sheet music. what was one last time? it’s not like he would really have to put his best foot forward for this mashup anyway—he was only required to be present. or so he thought. he’d have to look into what exactly a mashup even was. it takes him a minute too long to unceremoniously stuff the sheets into place before he turns to run off. “oh,” he gasps when a familiar face catches him in the act. a seemingly innocent smile creeps across his face while he runs through a list of excuses in his head. once he lands on something, he deliberately steps aside to block the piano. being caught in the choir room was embarrassing enough. “dude, i was just about to come and find you—do you have any advice about party themes? is back to school too on the nose?”
whenever she had a bit of free time on her hands, she liked to visit the choir room often, especially when she was almost certain there had been no one else around. after class, today was no different as she made her way over to the hallway where the room was before then being slightly startled by someone already being in the room. "hi," she replied, a small smile on her lips as she set down her stuff. "i didn't know someone else was in here." she admitted with a small chuckle before then shrugging. "you throwing a back to school party or something? why are you asking me? i'm not exactly "popular", to be honest."
option one. inside of the choir room [1/2]
there was a soft skip in her step as we walked into the choir room to join all her fellow glee club members. taking her usual seat in the second row, slightly off to the side, goldie shrugged out of the her cardigan (definitely used more for fashion then warmth) and laid it out on the chair next to her. by now everyone knew the spot was reserved for cece, but you could never be so sure! once she was settled, the blonde looked up at the board and saw this week's assignment written out. "do you think we're allowed to trade partners?" she thought of when the names had been pulled out of the hat, how she wished to be matched with at least five people in here and none of them had been the named called. "i doubt mr. kelmeckis remembered every pair off the top of his head." she couldn't even list off two groups from the top of her head.
option two. outside during cheer practice [2/2]
the sun was high in the sky, bright as could be, but thankfully there was a breeze that accompanied the late september day which gave some relief. stretching next to the others, goldie brought her hand up to shield her eyes from the glare as she trained her gaze on the person next to her. "i really hope coach steele goes easy on us today. i had way too many beers last night at a frat party and my tummy's been gurgling all morning." she sighed, moving into child's pose. or at least an attempt at it, really she was trying to find some kind of comfort. "remind me never to drink that much again." it wouldn't matter. she'd do it again. she never learned from her mistakes.
option three. inside sweet sugar [2/2]
she had found a moment for herself, between her late morning and mid afternoon classes, to be alone with a sweet treat. her biggest weakness is her penchant for sugar, and having a dessert shop in town was not doing her any favors. goldie had just bit into her pumpkin cupcake with cheesecake frosting when she locked eyes with another. "please don't mention this to coach steele," she begged, real fear in her eyes. putting the pastry down, goldie grabbed a napkin to wipe her mouth. "we're not supposed to eat unnecessary carbs or sugars, but it's a seasonal flavor!"
nadia couldn't care less about what other people went through, especially not the cheerleaders. she had been bullied by a few of them for being such a tomboy ever since her freshman year at saint rivera and she was never going to live it down, so it wasn't her problem what shit show they go through on a daily basis. "i never said anything about saying anything to anyone, dude." she reassured the other. "jesus, does she ever let you do anything?"
🎸 ˚ ﹕ㅤㅤ hollis couldn't even remember the last time he had a full eight hours of sleep since the new school year began, the return of glee club back into the good graces of the campus population turning out to be both the best and worst thing to happen in his collegiate career. it was great having a front row seat of this trainwreck waiting to happen ( already had an ongoing bet for how long it'll take until julian devereux bursts a forehead vein dealing with those jocks ), but it also meant learning a whole new repertoire of songs just so he, alongside other members of the jazz ensemble, could be ready whenever those freaks tell them to " hit it! " or give them a glance with the expectation that the band already mastered their rendition of … everything in between sondheim and doja cat. so here he was, almost midnight and still sitting at the curb outside the convenience store after hours and hours of practice, sipping on a blueberry slushie as he desperately tried to forget about the arrangements of those fuck-ass mashup songs still echoing in his head. how could anyone expect him to sleep after that? and he was so desperate for a distraction that his attention latched onto the first person that entered his vicinity, looking up from the asphalt to another soul still awake at this time. " you look like shit. " he didn't mean it, spoken with a jesting smile, only said to get a reaction. " what're you doin' still awake at this time? "
𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼: hollis, a member of the jazz ensemble and #furniture of new directions, cannot sleep because all the songs he's learning for the club are stuck in his head! #freehim, but he meets another night owl, and shenanigans ensue?
it wasn't odd to see theo up so late at night, he had always been a bit of a night owl ever since he was a kid. usually it was because his thoughts were so full of sports related things, but this time he simply could not sleep, so he thought it was a good idea to grab a midnight snack instead of trying to go back to bed. did he wake up his roommate in the middle of the night as a result? probably, but he truthfully didn't care.
heading over to the convenience store, he grabbed whatever snack he could find that was as simple as putting it in the fridge or microwaving for a few seconds. on his way out after paying for said snacks, he spots a familiar face and chuckles at his words. "gee thanks, i could say the same to you." he admitted before then sitting down beside him. "i don't know, couldn't sleep, what about you?"
intermission. god's apology for all that is wrong with the world, also known as milo's sacred space. he was often found roaming the aisles past midnight, as if he were a ghost that was trapped within the store. especially since he looked extremely ghastly beneath the fluorescent lighting. each week, he had money set aside to restock on snacks, drinks and the odd trinket perched by the cash register. he'd made a decent display over the years and displays it with pride. his favorite being the miniature rubber ducky in saint rivera's colors, to the extent that each teammate of the titans received one. currently, he was balancing several bags of chips atop a case with glacier freeze gatorade which the store clerk set aside for him each week. rapport matters! he hadn't the common sense to set the contents down whilst pouring out a slushy... a #CLOWN, and karma for trying the new flavors out with a cupped hand out beneath the nozzle. inevitably, the chips go each and every way with the case of gatorades splitting and rolling out into the aisle. “ CRAP! my gatorade... ” his yell falls quiet with his mourning, shoulders dropping in defeat and lips falling on a pout. his luck only gets worse with his slushy falling from the tilt and splashing across his favorite pair of joggers, staining them with red 40 and blue 1. “ oh, come on! ” an irritated groan, followed with a muttered, “ you're such an idiot, milo, ” as he smears the slushy contents into the joggers until they become a shade of saturated violet. admittedly, he was neither the brightest nor wisest, with little regard for the mess he'd created in a mere matter of seconds or the innocent bystanders on a late night snack run. after a loss of dignity and many paper towels later, he finds himself crouched against the slushy machine gathering the remaining chunks of slush. he notices a foreign shadow beside him, shoes soon coming into sight. “ just a second, nearly done here. then this stupid thing is all yours! ” a hand raised out to them, half apologetic, half annoyed, 100% embarrassed.
setting: intermission, the beloved convenience store that seems to become a major inconvenience for milo. your muse witnesses the aftermath of his destruction and deals with a slightly irritable milo.
clarissa frequented the local convenience store often after class, especially since she thought the food on campus tasted like absolute shit. not only that, but the food and beverages at the store reminded her of home and were a grand help whenever she was feeling a bit homesick as well.
she had been looking around the chip aisle for her favorite chips that she got after a bad day, only to find that they were sold out that day, as she tried her best not to have a mental breakdown. "well, fuck." she replied underneath her breath, grabbing the second closest chip to what her favorites were before then moving over to the slushy machine.
once she got there, it had been pre-occupied for a bit longer than she initially had anticipated as she watched a long line form behind her. "as if my day couldn't get any worse." she spoke out, not talking to anyone in particular as she waited for the male in front of her to be done. "come on, dude, i don't have all day and all i want is my damn slushy!"

" mm- wait just- one second- the phone eats first. " and clementine's not ashamed of that. not at this point. maybe she should be, honestly, but her life has to look pristine. no matter what's going on behind the scenes. her internet presence is college life without the damage. everyone's damaged at college, right?
" what did you get? it looks delish. " asked as she picks up her matcha, iced, always iced, phone going back in her purse. she'll pop that into tezza later before it goes on her stories.
"oh, so you're one of those people? jesus christ." nadia replied, rolling her eyes at the other. she hated when others decided it was more important to take candids of their food, rather than eat it when it was still good.
"an egg and cheese bagel and a vanilla latte because fuck what everyone thinks honestly." she reassured the other, mostly because this early in the morning girls like her usually would rather starve than eat anything good to try and maintain their slim physique.
⭐an open starter for anyone in new directions
as co-captain of the new directions and someone still living in shame from last year's disastrous competition season, stella firmly believed that it was her duty to ensure that each and every new directions member was taking things seriously. not just in their group rehearsals, but outside of them too.
which was why she'd taken to cornering new directioners in public settings, appearing seemingly out of thin air beside them in a way that might terrify those with a weaker constitution. luckily, her voice alerted people to her presence soon after. that day's opening line? "hope you're excited about this week's show choir assignment," words she delivered with an only vaguely threatening smile.
"randomized pairing mashups - how fun! i recommend booking the choir room for your rehearsals sooner, rather than later, before it's monopolized by other - lesser and non-performance related - activities."
he was still fairly new to the new directions, so he didn't really know much about the group as a whole. however, that didn't really matter, considering he wasn't exactly here to make friends. truth be told, theo had only joined because his best friend had convinced him to by telling him that there'd be good looking people around here.
he was going to try his best to be as good as he possibly could be, although he couldn't exactly sing for shit. whenever he had tried singing, it truly made glass shatter and not in a good way. "do we even know what it is yet or do we choose them ourselves?" he asked, genuinely curious.
"and by that you mean people hooking up in the rehearsal room? you jealous of the people that hook up in there, princess? looking for someone to fill that void?"
🎙️ ˚ ﹕ㅤㅤ it had been a damn busy month for everyone in saint rivera, how the world always felt like in such disarray with all the move-ins, reintroductions and syllabus week, and people desperately trying to make it to their next class without getting lost or having a mental breakdown. but of course, billy had always thrived in pandemonium, a talent honed for self-preservation in the soul-crushing la la land machine⸻ now live on air, voice wearing a more free-spirited persons than she really were, like everything was water off a duck's back, while the rest of the campus seemed to be dealing with whatever drama of the week. and ever curious, as if everyone else was part of her study into the human condition, this show had always the best way to get all the campus gossip without being directly involved. " welcome to off the record, you're live. what've you got for us? " billy asked after tapping the caller into the live broadcast, tone light and underlined with the kind of inquisitiveness that could make the weak-willed bare their heart to her. " if you're here to complain about abrams house being haunted like so many other callers last week, the university maintains the position that it's just the pipes. " then a chuckle, and she was sure that this wasn't about that at all, but it was a nice icebreaker anyway, something to set mood. because people were more likely to spill their secrets if they thought they could laugh and joke with you. " and no, they will not be responding to the current student petition to bring in zak bagans to check it out. so, c'mon, what other fun stuff d'you have for me? "
𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼: billy has a segment in her campus radio show where callers can anonymously vent, confess, ask for advice, or talk about whatever they want regarding their campus life. trolls and gossips welcome!
clarissa had never been this nervous before, it had been a long week and she had a lot to talk about, but she wasn't sure if calling it into the radio was even a good idea. whatever, she needed somewhere to let out all of her rage and the campus radio seemed like the next best thing.
once she dialed the number, she wasn't expecting to be one of the first callers on the line, rehearsing what she was even going to say. "oh shit, am i live?" she asked, not fully expecting an answer before then taking a deep breath. "uh..." she stuttered a bit, scratching her head. "shit." she whispered underneath her breath, out of pure nervousness. "why is it that that the hockey team is more funded than any other club or sport around here? has anyone ever even bothered asking principal figgins or are they too chicken shit to stand up to the man?" she asked. "i mean, everyone else is just as good as all the athletes around here are, but we barely get shit for it and have to do things out of our own damn pocket because of it."
