Day 198/365 of listing something good I saw today:
A big bowl of homemade bilberry mush. It is an incredibly simple treat - fill 1/4th of a bowl with bread crumbs, 1/4h with sugar, and mix them together (the mix should take up about half of the bowl). Then crush up a bunch of fresh bilberries, and mix them in. Let the mush sit for a minute or two to let the ingredients get to know each other. Consume from the mixing bowl, ideally with a spoon.
Picked the bilberries myself (this year seems to be a rich one for bilberry harvest), got home, found that we don't have breadcrumbs, remembered that there's this ancient bread hunk somewhere around here, dry as a fossil, that I had kept around specifically for this purpose. Took out my beloved mortar and pestle and ground up that fucker into smithereens. It made just enough breadcrumbs for the amount of berries I had picked.
A splendid little sweet treat. Cost me nearly nothing save for the hours of work, which I enjoyed doing.
Cannot even picture a bilberry, have never heard the name before, and am verily enjoying picturing a little forest mouse eating a breakfast of Bilberry Mush
They're also called european blueberries. Every time I call them "blueberries" someone corrects me to tell me they're bilberries, and every time I call them bilberries, people have no idea what that is.
Those darn "cultivated blueberries" are these strange things in supermarkets with their light flesh and next to no taste. Real blueberries are tasty and very red on the inside. Also much smaller.
