words of.... wisdom?
text: You can get used to anything but an icicle in your ass, & even that will melt
Hey, you made it!
It is a sort of wisdom. For anyone unfamiliar, it’s a translation of a Finnish expression, “Kaikkeen tottuu paitsi jääpuikkoon perseessä, ja sekin sulaa pois.” It can be thought of as a rather irreverant equivalent to the English expression, “This too shall pass.”
Finns have a sense of staunch determination and an indomitable spirit baked into their cultural identity, and this idea of everything being either tolerable or transitory is a reflection of that.
your friends love you, your brain is just mean
we don't credit rebecca sugar enough for making the episode with the first gay wedding in a kids show extremely plot relevant so it could not be skipped or cut.
#rebecca sugar has gone on record saying that they knew from the beginning they wanted ruby and sapphire and they put every inch of planning#in to make sure that the studio could not take them out. sugar has said they’d compromised on hundreds of things they’d wanted for steven#so that they had the bargaining power specifically to keep ruby and sapphire’s relationship#and a number of ‘filler’ episodes were created just to establish counter-arguments that might come up when they pitched the wedding episode#the one that comes to mind is the episode about steven and connie getting lost in rose’s room steven’s central conflict about liking their#fave book series’ romantic ending was later weaponised when producer’s were like ‘oh but steven’s a boy he won’t be too interested in them#getting married’ sugar was able to be like ‘no. in this episode it’s established he loves romance and specifically weddings. and in these#episodes it’s shown how much steven cares about ruby and sapphire and their relationship and happiness. you cannot convince me this is not#good and necessary plot development#and they wrapped it up in the season finale and the big climactic point of the diamonds finally coming to attack earth to make the#episode integral to the series no skipping it without confusion. and had ruby wear a wedding dress because international censors took#advantage of her design to give her a masculine va#and sugar made certain that everybody knew This was a queer love story that an entire town supported and admired and that any child watchin#it at home would know they are not alone and that that support is waiting for them out there somewhere#sugar sacrificed the wider story they wanted to tell for that and it was a horrible decision to be given but they made the right choice

Well that’s just fucking delightful. 😍
When I (M29) was a young boy (M7) my father (M35) took me into the city (X167) to see a marching band (M23, M21, M22, F22, M24, M25, F21, M
He said “Son (M7) when you grow up (F33) would you be — wait what”
for second i was thinking like "art block is such a weird concept. imagine if you just became randomly unable to do OTHER types of tasks" before remembering that i have executive dysfunction and frequently AM randomly unable to do other types of tasks. i got cleaning block. cooking block. taking a walk block.
I don't love that every time a famous artist turns out to be a fucking disgusting piece of trash loser evil shitstain that everyone always scrambles to say WELL THEIR ART WAS ALWAYS MID AND BAD ANYWAY. like dude just reckon with the fact you can't judge someone's moral fiber based on the art they make or the clothes they wear or the way they speak or fucking anything anything at all
doing my part to break this trend: i genuinely really liked lostprophets' music before it came out that the lead singer was a child predator, and i also still enjoy some kevin spacey acting roles like 'the negotiator' and 'outbreak'.
cognitive dissonance and discomfort intolerance are hard to cope with, believe me i know, but holding opposing viewpoints (e.g. "this person has caused harm to some people" and "this person has brought joy to other people") and finding nuance in the space between is an important skill to practice.
"This song slaps, but now that I know it's made by such a horrible person it gives me the ick and I don't want to hear it any more" is a perfectly legitimate stance. "This art is good but I don't want to partake in it because that will ultimately support artists who are using that money and support to make the world worse" is also a legitimate stance. "I liked this, but the author being so gross means I can't enjoy it any more and also the fandom has become a political nucleus for bigots so I'm excising it from my life" is another perfectly legitimate stance. You can choose to disengage with art for whatever reason you want, personal or political, it just. Doesn't mean that the quality of the art was always bad As Us Good People Knew (or should have known) because Good People make Good Art and Bad People make Bad Art.

blocking tip: you don't have to wait to have a negative interaction with someone to block them. you can block them without ever interacting with them. I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone being rude to someone else and preemptively blocked them

It should be illegal to have a bus stop without a bench I am 1000% serious rn
"oh no homeless people would sleep on them"
SO WHAT, let the homeless sleep, I am fighting bears over here to get a hecking bench near my local bus stops. A shelter would be nice, so I don't have to stand in the rain, but a bench would be a nice start.
Not that anybody asked, but I think it's important to understand how shame and guilt actually work before you try to use it for good.
It's a necessary emotion. There are reasons we have it. It makes everything so. much. worse. when you use it wrong.
Shame and guilt are DE-motivators. They are meant to stop behavior, not promote it. You cannot, ever, in any meaningful way, guilt someone into doing good. You can only shame them into not doing bad.
Let's say you're a parent and your kid is having issues.
Swearing in class? Shame could work. You want them to stop it. Keep it in proportion*, and it might help. *(KEEP IT IN PROPORTION!!!)
Not doing their homework? NO! STOP! NO NOT DO THAT! EVER! EVER! EVER! You want them to start to do their homework. Shaming them will have to opposite effect! You have demotivated them! They will double down on NOT doing it. Not because they are being oppositional, but because that's what shame does!
You can't guilt people into building better habits, being more successful, or getting more involved. That requires encouragement. You need to motivate for that stuff!
If you want it in a simple phrase:
You can shame someone out of being a bad person, but you can't shame them into being a good person.
Fun fact, that was literally what inspired me to make this post!
