Star Wars The Mandalorian Season 2 Issue #6

im SURE ppl have talked about this before but bloodymary (romantic or platonic) kinda has unimaginable sauce. they're both sacrificial lambs forced onto the altar torn between the desire to complete a mission they don't understand and a deep will to live. "this is bigger than me" /positive on one end and /negative on the other. the plot of iron lung is arguably close to what would've happened if grace didn't recover as much of his memory or didn't do it so quickly. a spiral of isolation-fueled terror knowing he should be doing something and it's something important that could either save or doom what remains of humanity but he doesn't know what. struggling to understand the intentions of the larger forces puppeteering him. a universe of dead stars. everyone he's ever met slowly dying out somewhere far away.

it's such a similar plot, but one is cosmic hopecore and the other is cosmic horror. there's an alien that quickly wins over grace's trust with extremely straightforward motivations and several aliens desperately scrambling to win simon's trust with extremely ambiguous motivations, one insisting it's trying to save humanity, the other saying it wants to save him, one tearing apart his body, the other shredding his mind. phm has a conflict broken down into excruciating scientific detail for the sake of clear understanding, and iron lung has a conflict that defies understanding to the point of all the character's total mental & physical collapse, to the point that even the audience can't say if they just watched a heroic sacrifice or a meaningless death that doomed everyone.

basically, it has the sauce that all the best crossovers do which is sheer tonal CLASH. put the tortured blorbo in a comfort situation and the happy friendship blorbo in a torture situation. i have more thoughts but no more words so uh. hell yeah

Thinking yet again about the 🥺 raw hope on Maul’s face when he thinks he hears his presumed-dead enemy’s voice: he’s never treated Obi Wan like an enemy soldier who defeated him in battle, but a comrade who betrayed and abandoned him, he spends TCW acting like Obi Wan left him at the altar. In this scene his yellow Sith eyes are desaturated down to khakhi and he is actually, truly, for real crying a single perfect tear, because that’s the ANH tagline: help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope. Whatever attraction was going on during their duel in TPM got magnified into Kenobi becoming one of the main emotional anchors of Maul’s life when he was in total isolation for a decade and this one perfect duel with his perfect match was the last human contact he ever had, because Obi-Wan was the last person to see him alive. It kills me that Maul spent more or less his entire adult life having this intense one-sided Gideon and Harrowhark relationship with someone who didn’t even remember him the next time they met. In this scene, like in the final Mandalore arc where he wanted them to team up and save the galaxy together, he’s completely over the delusion of wanting revenge, he loves this man, and he’s letting himself believe for the briefest moment that he survived the purge and finally came back for him

I'm surprised I didn't say this in the original post but to specify: Roy Mustang grew up in a brothel, specifically he grew up adopted by a woman running a brothel where, specifically, all the women there are in the business of covert information reconnaissance by playing escort to important politicians.

Which. is an absolutely batshit primary character backstory to mention once, late in the series, and then immediately move on from.

And actually Hiromu Arakawa did it so well that every single fan interpretation of Roy Mustang for the FMA03 anime treated him as an honest to god man-slut. Bought his whole act hook line and sinker.

And you do, in fact, need to get further into the manga/Brotherhood to realize he is just acting like a slut because surely a true and honest hand-to-god slut like this guy wouldn't be overthrowing the government.
