"A Scottish field once home to mono-crop barley has become a pollinatorâs paradise after intervention from a local trust saw bumblebee numbers increase 100-fold.
Entitled Rewilding Denmarkfield, and run by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, the project has also seen a sharp increase in the number of species passing through the rolling meadows after they were reclaimed by dozens of wildflower species.
The area north of Perth is about 90 acres in size, and surveys of bumblebees before the project began rarely recorded more than 50. But by 2023, just two years of letting ânature take the leadâ that number has topped 4,000, with the number of different bee species doubling.
âThis superb variety of plants attracts thousands of pollinators. Many of these plants, such as spear thistle and smooth hawkâs beard, are sometimes branded as âweedsâ. But they are all native species that are benefiting native wildlife in different ways,â Ecologist Ellie Corsie, who has been managing the project since it began in 2021, said.
âDue to intensive arable farming, with decades of plowing, herbicide, and pesticide use, biodiversity was incredibly low when we started. Wildlife had largely been sanitized from the fields. Rewilding the site has had a remarkable benefit.â
Similar increases have been recorded in the populations of butterflies, with a tripling in the number of these insects seen on average during a ramble through the field.
The numbers of both insects are now so high that Rewilding Denmarkfield offers bee and butterfly safaris to visitors.
Local residents told the Scotsman that on spring and summer days, the field is awash with color, and hums with the sounds of bees and birds. Even as multiple housing developments expand around the Denmarkfield area, the field is a haven for wildlife."

Anyone ever think about the fact that Claire is pretty much the only person on the island that Kate regularly speaks to who never talks to Kate about Jack and Sawyer? Anyone ever consider that this is because Claire sees Kate as an individual who makes her own choices, not as an extension of Jack and Sawyer's desires and plans? Ever consider that this is emphasized by the fact that the first time Kate and Claire talk, Claire talks about her observations about KATE's personality traits (Gemini, restless, passionate)?
And while we're here, Kate doesn't talk to Claire about Charlie either. Charlie and Kate talk about CLAIRE, but Claire and Kate never talk about guys together. Because they don't care about guys when they're together. Because they love each other for exactly who they are.
The writers might have made Kate's story about Jack and Sawyer and Claire's story about Charlie, but Kate and Claire never see each other's stories as revolving around male love interests.

for those unaware today india experienced one of its biggest protests in half a decade. there were protests all over the nation for various causes but the major one was in delhi. all we asked for was the resignation of the education minister because he's failed the students of this nation time & time again. but we were met with brutality, the police had barricaded the main site of protest (jantar mantar). metro stations were shutdown, the public was restrained from reaching the protest site and all the adjoining areas had signal jammers to make sure the crowd had no access to constant updates. they had us blocked from all the sides. they were lathi (baton) charging students from one side & releasing tear gas from the other. you couldn't walk 100 m on streets without having a tear gas shell thrown at you. there were many students, women & kids bleeding â some from their head. some couldn't walk anymore. the police had removed their nameplates & acted with full impunity to resort to unprecedented levels of violence. they were pelting stones at us, beating up people for no reason, forcefully detaining them and attacking us constantly with tear gas & rubber bullets. they wouldn't let you exit either. the crowd was peaceful & looking out for each other yet they were met with violence. i made a friend who was all alone & she asked to join me & my friend because a policeman wouldn't leave her alone. he constantly prodded her for personal info, invited her back to the jeep saying they have food there, wouldn't stop following her around. you couldn't call or ask anyone for help, we were left to fend for ourselves & be on a constant lookout if you did not want to be beaten up to death by police. all for what? asking a resignation? shame on this country.

Cannot express enough my love for these. My entire apartment is on five circuits, controlled by two duplicate remotes. I can turn off the living room lights from my bed, if I forget, without getting up. And no apps needing so nothing to hack or spy on you.

I think for a lot of people âI am completely helpless and powerlessâ and âI am completely powerful and in controlâ are both basically comforting fantasies because most of us live our lives in an in between place where we have enough agency to be responsible for our actions but not enough agency to have true control over our lives and the tension between power and powerlessness in the day to day is psychologically wearing and exhausting
