i have a patron who is mean as a snake. won’t respond when you greet her, barks orders at you, and is generally nasty

i couldn’t stand her & dreaded the moment she walked in the door, until i stopped one day & went “wow, to walk around feeling unhappy enough to treat people so horribly every day. what a difficult way to live.”

and so my tactics changed. i made a point to be extra kind & friendly to her. she changed her hair color one day & when i complimented her on it, she was very caught off guard & said “oh, thank you. my whole life i’ve thought i was ugly.”

now we’re at the point where she shows me pictures of watercolor paintings she made & says hi when she walks in the door. she’s not my favorite patron, but she’s perfectly okay. most unpleasant people aren’t inherently rotten, they’re just unhappy & coping with it poorly

I joined a new project at work that is basically just a drawn out example of how NOT to run a project and it’s only been like four weeks and I’m already SO ANNOYED. I was asked to join by the Project Director to help them get their project management shit in order and she made it sound like the main Task Lead is the stick in the mud for everything but then any suggestion I make she basically says no or makes me reduce changes to current workflows so much that there’s basically no point. Like they are using Jira so ineffectively it’s to the point where it’s probably a hindrance to their work (each giant analysis they do for the client that has 5-10 steps and multiple people writing, coding, developing specs, and QAing work) and yet each analysis gets ONE ticket! Mind you they don’t bother with epics at all so analyses that are similar to each other aren’t grouped in any way, all of the Tasks are just assigned to the one task lead, and instead of using date fields he just either writes a comment about a due date or updates this long meandering list of half baked action items he keeps in the descriptions of each task. So then for me to lead update meetings I have to scan through 10-15 comments under a single analysis to know where we are at currently (I don’t even bother trying to figure out who is doing what or any future due dates at this point) I want to give the team an award for Worst Use of Jira ever!!! And I put together this nice PowerPoint for the PD to be like “hey, I’ve implemented Jira on four other similar projects and here’s a few examples ranging from least amount of change to most of what we could do” and yet all I’ve been allowed to do is add a single assignments tracking table to each Jira ticket, which is stupidly manual and defeats the point of using the platform!!!!

Okay guys, so on the eve of getting rid of our fucking authoritarian leader, I will tell you how we did it, despite the governments overwhelming media presence and fucking undercover operations against the opposition.

It was actually said best by a Hungarian comic, I'm paraphrasing a bit: If your house is on fire, you can't be like 'well that's not the fireman I imagined'.

I know it's been said a thousand times before, I know everybody is raging against having to vote for a less than ideal candidate, but today has proven that it fucking works. It's the only thing that works. And if the new guy is just a step closer to what you want? That's a fucking win. That's a fucking step in the right direction.

Is Péter Magyar going to usher in gay marriage and UBI? No. But he's not going to ban pride, like Orbán tried. Is he going to cut all ties with Russia? Probably not, but is he going to make sure that we stay in the EU? Fuck yeah. And over Orbán, that's a fucking improvement, and I will take it gladly.
