so i was thinking about botl last night and i thought of mt saint helens and I think it's definitely not talked about enough how much it would have impacted percy. i think that event was definitely to showcase how disastrous percy's powers can be.

given how many people died, i can't imagine percy not thinking of how many people's families got wrecked, how some people were dangerously injured, how much wreckage there was. Now imagine being barely fifteen and knowing you did it all. Like, that was all you. You caused that distraction. Thousands are dead and you just did that to save your own life.

Now I very much appreciate Percy saving his life, because he was crucial to saving mortals from Kronos, but the guilt Percy would've felt (it's not like he's never shown passively suicidal thoughts before) would've been astronomical. Like, he can use his powers for battle, but outside of that? Thinking of doing anything big even in battle? The amount of angst potential and hurt comfort potential that has is insane.

Because he has one year to train and he's scared of himself. Of how much he can ruin. And according to him he did so much harm that he probably thinks he cant redeem himself after that. How can he be depended on to save the gods, to save everyone from Kronos, if he destroys so much just to save himself?

We know he wins, we know that, but chronologically Percy doesn't. It's the most destructive and biggest use of his powers yet. How's he supposed to use the powers safely when he's so scared to use them?

In case you didn't know, me building up all this angst potential for Percy is just to have pre relationship percabeth and besties percy grover and annabeth btw. i love the original trio so freaking much they deserve the world. Honestly, off book that's one of the most sensible conclusions I can come up with for Percy's year before turning sixteen. In my opinion it makes sense. The whole year being training, fear, anxiety and wondering, especially for Annabeth who literally knows the prophecy, what'll happen the day Percy turns 16.

percy jackson au where sally decides that percy absolutely does not need to be known as a forbidden child and tells him to gaslight his way out of that role as hard as possible.

take this as a 'luke steals the lightning bolt later for plot purposes'. percy, twelve, acts like he's super scared of water, absolutely avoids it, pretends that it will actually kill him if he jumps in. this is not good for him btw, as he needs to avoid water at all times but he desperately really wants to just go into the lake and chill to his heart's content. alas, he has to do so to not like... die.

Poseidon, seeing the whole thing play out, makes it a point to not claim him, especially because the lightning bolt hasn't been stolen, so he doesn't need a demigod to go find it for him and prove his innocence. The problem comes when percy's not used to his powers and all as he doesn't get the chance to embrace it, so when summer ends he's only got a random unbalanced sword to fight with when he goes back to live with his mom.

This proves to be a p r o b l e m and because of his lack of actual helpful defenses (no riptide, no other power he can use because he doesn't know how to, and its honesty the second monster he fights, because hades doesn't actually send any monsters its just random ones that come after percy), so he goes back to camp to ensure he gets good with a flimsy sword and he and his mom can actually be safe in the mortal world.

Maybe after seeing how long percy's gone unclaimed, luke tries to get him on his side. very slyly of course, because chiron still has a suspicious eye on percy as he knows the boy is strong but is confused why he hasn't been claimed yet. Kronos also feels the vibe that this demigod kid that luke's kind of interested in getting on his side (after their first sword fighting session) is interested and he can feel Percy's power.

I think this could lead to a high probability that the moment the lightning bolt goes missing, Poseidon tells percy that he either superstitiously recover it or poseidon will have to claim him so that he has to go anyway. this leads to percy's first sneak out of camp, and annabeth helps because they're both very determined. because the monster that first chased percy was 100% not a whole ass minotaur, grover actually got his searcher's license and percy does I-M him once explaining the entire situation but he's not on the quest (rip im so sorry my dear grover)

I think this leads to a squashed timeline of lightning thief and sea of monsters with a percy who thinks the lightning bolt has absolutely no relation to kronos, because kronos is observing this weird-ass kid who's way too powerful to have some random godly parent. percy and annabeth bicker in the whole quest, and it only gets more curious when its ares who gets punished at the end because it doesn't make sense as it seems like he wasn't acting of his own actions but he was???? what?? because they don't know its kronos.

Kronos, who sees how well its working as ares is now mistrusted, decides it'd be a better idea to pick off the olympians one by one, using these two demigods to "expose" gods and their actions that are trying to ruin the other gods, play on their weaknesses so that when he attacks it will all have already fallen, so he doesn't reveal himself by any measure to anyone except luke and some select demigods.

luke, meanwhile, sees percy realise grover is in danger and volunteers to go with them as annabeth would wonder why luke didn't want to come with them. Luke tries to work in the background and planning to poison thalia's tree and blame it on Dionysus. Luke sees the fleece and annabeth and percy are both highly suspicious when he keeps arguing to take it for himself, so they decide to sacrifice that annabeth will keep it in the big house, and luke decides that after organizing mistrust against dionysus using thalia's tree, he'll use the fleece to heel the tree and immediately heal kronos so that luke's stability in camp half blood is even more recognized.

basically, this idea has no descended into :

annabeth and percy sneaking into every single quest

kronos and luke, literal spies

discord amongst the god themselves

which i think could work very well, especially when the gods are falling into chaos and camp half blood has no reason to distrust luke and more and more demigods that reach camp and even those who don't are lured into working for kronos. it could lead to hm rising even earlier, but that's a whole conversation for later.

honestly i think the great prophecy in in heroes of olympus shouldve been more high stakes. it felt like a prophecy specifically just for like four people rather than like the entire group of seven. if you focus on any line except the first

to storm or fire the world must fall an oath to keep with a final breath and foes bear arms to the doors of death.

the second line obviously refers to jason/leo/percy, since they're the ones who have that power, then oath to keep is leo's and foes bear arms refers to what annabeth and percy did in tartarus, which is great and all, and i understand that the others did play a part in defeating Gaia at the end, but maybe a longer prophecy would've been great.

the one in the original series was definitely my favorite thing ever, with so much ambiguity and so many stakes on percy himself, and it had such a good ending that i think if this prophecy was just a little longer, especially because as the second great prophecy in the same generation (rip) it would've had more staked on it.

i've had many thoughts about heroes of olympus and i thought what would've had more stakes was if the last part of hoo was focused on, and the characters were in more danger where they seriously did not come out unharmed or even come out. i would hate for them to die, literal tears, but that emotion really wouldve elevated it for me personally.

i think at one point i did have a thought of supposing that the gods were more threatened, and that the greek-roman war was not actually focused on as their gods were under threat by the current big bad. Though the greek-roman war couldve been good but i feel like that entire octavian arc could have been substituted by a higher stakes arc with gaia. that's just me though, since i liked the way the original series went better, but tell me your thoughts :)

au where jason hightails out of camp half blood the night he's there because something about the place feels oddly unsafe (remember when he saw the big house) and he has amazing instincts and decides that screw everyone else he needs to return to a place he hardly remembers. He let's his instincts guide him towards new rome, because for him New York also feels like a place where he definitely should not be.

Meanwhile, Percy wakes up way too early, because Hera put some backup or something on what would happen if jason ran away or something (godly precognition or something? idk) and he's definitely not in the mood to head towards new rome, a place that feels distinctly unsafe, especially when he almost arrives, sees it from afar and decides this is not it. or he does arrive, sees the frosty welcome, feels unsafe and decides that a camp that uses kids of fight for it is not a place where he wants to be.

percy leaves and heads towards new york, slightly remember it as bieng the place where him and annabeth spent a lot of time together. so he heads there, incidentally using the same path as jason. Both of them end up together and now there's one greek one roman demigod, both amnesiac, both attracting monsters that just won't die and are delaying two whole prophecies. They both promise to help each other but Percy's extremely wary bc blonde guy with face scare? suspicious. Jason doesn't trust this guy out of the blue randomly, but they're literally the only two people they know exist atp.

Then percy blows something up probably, bc of monsters and gets blamed for something that is, let's be real, not his fault at all, now they've got a manhunt in that state so they have to derail from their plans and stumble into nico who's literally just vibing from tiredness after too much shadow travel between the two camps.

Percy thinks he's familiar and is convinced he can lead them to where he needs to go, and Jason's also a little familiar with him, so they both convince themselves to take nico along. Now there are three extremely powerful demigods just chilling together, and this definitely attracts the satyrs attention, meanwhile having decided to first drop of Jason, they head off into the direction of jason's quest in the lost hero.

cue surprised pikachu face when both camps finally find them, and a lot of shenanigans.

additionally i think it'd be funny if annabeth and reyna both meet while searching for jason and percy. annabeth's not slept in weeks, is cursing out the gods and is so close to singlehandedly breaking into olympus and attempting grandpacide or whatever its called and reyna is literally trying not to think about the fact that she left camp jupiter to its own self for more than a week so that she could find jason.

she does not want to think about it. she managed to get someone to step in but the havoc octavian is probably causing is something she's definitely ignoring, and then she meets this blonde girl who's cursing the gods like it's her job or something, and then they both find out they're missing this one really important person.

then annabeth remembers jason, compares reyna's tattoo to what she saw and now they're both on a hunt for two wayword demigods who're literally both just hitchhiking across the country at this point accidentally involving themselves in very important quests.

i think it'd be even funnier if annabeth and reyna somehow end up rescuing hera/juno who is definitely failing at hiding that the plan she made went to shit.

my favorite percy jackson fic type has got to be the ones where percy and annabeth meet as kids. literally so cute and so many possibilities. him going to camp earlier? perfect. luke getting even angrier at the gods when he sees these two little kids eager to go through so much and then just absolutely going with the wrong path to avenge all of them is so much fun.
