I feel like this is pretty important to realize: the cops are becoming exhausted, and there’s a limited supply of them. NYPD has every cop on duty working full days every day. We have an unlimited capacity to rotate in fresh fighters that they simply do not have. We can take shifts. They can’t.

This is also why we’re starting to see bare minimum concessions now. The powers that be have realized they’ve made a grave miscalculation. A week into it, and ideas that seemed utterly impossible even a month ago are on the table- LA is talking about a hundred and fifty million dollar budget cut for the LAPD, every cop directly involved in George Floyd’s murder has been arrested and Chauvin’s charge has been raised to second degree murder, parts of the Minneapolis city council is pushing to permanently disband the Minneapolis police department.

What could we win with two weeks? Three? An organized general strike that brings the entire economy to a crashing halt? It is difficult to feel hopeful in such brutal times, but there is profound hope to be had in the realization that a week of getting our asses kicked has advanced the mainstream narrative around police so much further than electoralism would’ve dared to dream in 100 years.

Police departments expect protests to happen on a single day, or at most, over a weekend - they call in extra officers from nearby cities or counties, they put people on extra-long shifts, and they let the paperwork slide for a couple of days.

They don’t have officers to keep that up for a week, much less for a month. Judges will let it slide if they wait an extra day or two for arraignment hearings, but civil rights lawyers will have a good case to throw out everything if they delay much longer than that.

If arrested: DO NOT waive your right to a speedy trial. If you can at all afford the wait, DO NOT agree to plea bargain. More than 90% of cases are plea bargained out. Fewer than 5% of cases go to trial. (The difference: If they can’t get a plea, sometimes they drop the case. They may know they don’t have evidence that will hold up in court.)

Courts do not have the capacity to put hundreds of protesters on trial in the space of a few weeks. (Especially now. Courts are operating at limited capacity.)

Keep pushing. The cities that want peace are starting to make offers. The mayors and city councils who want to be re-elected, are starting to realize that this isn’t going to vanish with next week’s news cycle.

And in about another week, we’ll see the waves of COVID hit the police departments. (It’ll hit the protesters, too, and harder. But you don’t need two years of training and a hiring interview to join the protesters; police numbers are limited to what’s on hand today.)

They have limited resources. And they’re stretched thin already.

There is so much more to it. There is a myth perpetuated by Reaganites that he was an historically significant President, in some positive sense. If you are old enough to have voted in 1980, you probably know differently. If you were born after 1980 you have been raised on this myth. He sold Americans a fable about a Hollywood movie-like exceptional past and destiny, and led ordinary people around with portrayals of that mirage while his reactionary robber-baron friends set about dismantling 50 years of progressive advancements for working men and women, on their way to returning themselves to the position of unfettered economic domination they held between the Civil War and the Great Depression. He was a union buster. He gave us Scalia – need I say more? He tried to give us Robert Bork (does anyone under 30 even know who he is?). He lied about Iran/Contra. He avoided dealing with AIDS. He sealed the political sham-show between right wing capitalist kings and the evangelical thought-control snake-oil salesmen. Americans don’t want to hear that they are ordinary citizens of the world, and they don’t want to hear that the aren’t anointed by some deity to lead the world to salvation. They lapped it up, and they continue to do so.

1) He almost tripled the National Debt. And you need to see the difference with zeroes:

When Reagan took office in 1980: $909,100,000 owed.(909.1 billion)

When Reagan left office in 1988: $2,601,300,000,000 owed. (2.6 trillion)

2) He raised taxes on the middle class and the poor ELEVEN TIMES while in office.

3) Unemployment soared after Reagan passed his tax cuts for the rich, and it took decades to get back down again.

4) He turned the U.S. into an illegal weapons dealer.

5) He funded terrorists, helping create the Taliban and Osama bin Laden. From NewsOne:

Not to mention that because he drastically expanded the drug war, setting the stage for zero tolerance. Mass incarcerations increased from 50,000 in 1980 to over 400,000 in 1997. These policies also blocked syringe programs, which actually made HIV/AIDS much, much worse.

His deregulation of the S&L industry meant they no longer had to rely on residential mortgages for funding. Commercial real estate speculation ensued (sound familiar???) which eventually led to corruption, collapse of hundreds of thrift institutions and, you guessed it, a hundreds of billions of dollars taxpayer bailout.

Under his administration, nothing was done about racial discrimination in lending. Blatant redlining continued, and even though it was at this point illegal, nothing was done to prosecute or sanction banks.

Can we talk about how he started and perpetuated the myth of the welfare queen–the indolent black woman with an entitlement problem–which still affects the program and how people view it today. He used this rhetoric to get elected and used it to justify drastic cuts to urban funding, affecting everything from urban infastructure, to salaries, to urban schools and hospitals and clinics.

His cuts to low-income housing subsidies raised homeless from 600,000 to over 1.2 million in one year. Even the idea that homelessness is a choice stems from him.

But you know, he told Gorbechev to tear down this wall, so he’s a hero, right?

The deification of Reagan is one of the most damaging things the GOP has ever done. In a just world, he would be remembered as one of the worst Presidents, as one of the worst humans who ever ascended to the Presidency, ever. His record on AIDS alone should be enough to damn him, but it, and all of this, apparently isn’t. He should be remembered alongside Nixon. Instead he usually gets lumped in with Kennedy. I cannot overstate how furious that makes me.

In ‘83, the US government sprayed a very large crop of marijuana in Mexico with paraquat. Paraquat is a known poison that, even in the 80s, scientists and environmentalists knew was bad for even the plants it was sprayed on, but the government did so with the explanation it was a herbicide meant to kill weeds, especially “Weed” itself. Now, studies linked to the government claim there’s no evidence that this paraquat caused any negative developments but a separate medical study had this to say on the topic:

Human paraquat poisoning from accidental or intentional ingestion is very often fatal. According to the amount of paraquat involved, death can occur within hours or weeks following ingestion. The inefficacy of the various treatments undertaken have led to determine prognostic factors based upon the evolution of plasma and urine paraquat concentrations or of usual biochemical parameters. We report one case of acute poisoning which, although the ingested dose of paraquat was not massive (< 50 mg/kg-1) and the severity indices were in favour of a delayed fatal outcome, has ended in an early death.

I can’t actually find any statistics on how many people died from this (or went blind, as there’s also anecdotal evidence of but nothing concrete). It’s not talked about or studied. It’s very often ignored even when discussing the “War on Drugs.”

This was after the Nixon administration had already done the exact same thing. My father knew someone, all the way up here in Michigan, who was standing at “smoker’s corner” and suddenly collapse - it caused somewhat severe brain damage in this case - thousands of (mostly teenage) people were smoking this marijuana (both in the 70s and 80s). Even the most trace amounts had effects that the governmental studies simply didn’t look for (they all claimed no cases of lung or throat cancer showed up… if the smallest traces causes brain damage and just a bit more can mean death, I don’t imagine many lived long enough to develop said cancers).

actually there’s significant evidence in terms of Neolithic burials that disabled people who would not have been able to hunt for themselves (the archaeological evidence mostly shows mobility disabilities because it’s visible in the bone record) were well fed and cared for by their communities

so the “people like you would have been left to die” argument isn’t just cruel and violently ableist, it’s extremely historically inaccurate and based off of projecting modern prejudice on prehistoric cultures

Another point: back in the ancient times, pretty much ALL work that got done was work of the “if it doesn’t get done, you starve” variety, perhaps embellished a bit by the “if it doesn’t get done, you’re uncomfortable” sort. Work was vital, yes, but all the work that was vital was vital.

Nowadays, on the other hand, we have excess, and waste, and an absolute shitpot of arbitrary work that gets shoved into the “necessary and vital” pile just because somebody else can make a buck off it, made as much off of cut corners and financial shenanigans as of anybody’s honest labor. Shitty Wal-Mart plastic pitchers and crap toys that capture attention and drop it just as fast, “fast fashion” that you wear twice and it falls apart, shiny chrome washer-dryers that are going to be replaced in five or ten years because planned obsolescence meets upgrade culture, and produce that gets rejected because it doesn’t look shiny and uniform and perfect.

If you’re a cashier, you have to stand even though you could do your job just as well sitting. A fast-food place throws out pounds of fries, empties the whole assembly-line of prepared food into the dumpster at the end of the night, and if you take any of it home to eat, that’s called stealing. Grocery stores throw out entire cartons of eggs because one out of twelve is cracked and lock their dumpsters so nobody can scavenge food from the tons of what’s thrown out still edible. Tech stores demand that unsold computers be destroyed with a sledgehammer before being thrown out, and all the labor that went into making it, assembling it, forming its component parts and mining its raw materials, is all wasted.

We can see this shit going on, we encounter it and sometimes we’re ordered to carry it out, in our workplaces that pay us shit, and let me tell you, there’s a hell of a difference between “if you don’t get the wheat harvested we’ll have no bread all winter” and “you need to spend the next eight hours cooking food so we can hold a profit after throwing a quarter of it in the garbage.” A multitude of people would benefit greatly if allowed to access that waste or allowed to not produce what’s likely going to be wasted.

It’s not that we want something for nothing–it’s that we want the stuff we’ve put work into creating to benefit us, or someone who could use it, and not see good work twisted into benefiting no one while still being demanded and still being underpaid.

If people in agrarian societies of the past starved it was frequently due to an uncontrollable act of nature (drought, flood, locusts, plague).

Now people starve because they don’t “produce” in an acceptable way for our capitalist system, which has a very narrow and limited definition of what being “useful” is, and because our corporate overlords would rather throw food away than feed someone who is starving.

We have enough food, but people are starving to death.

We have enough houses, but people are dying of exposure because they’re homeless.

We have enough medicine, but people are dying because they can’t afford to pay for it.

And we accept this as correct because we’ve been brainwashed that only “useful” i.e. “capitalist productive” people deserve to have food, shelter and healthcare.

That’s fucked up.
