If anyone in my real life talks shit about jk Rowling, my formula is to act totally shocked and ask what she said. Almost nobody knows the answer, (ofc I know what she said duh) but it makes people curious what her words *actually* were. They usually look it up; and i have had great success at having people reflect on why they were so quick to mark her as evil.

I ask them where they heard it from, and they just heard it somewhere and decided to repeat it. That is when I say how i dont know anything about her views on trans, but that i really admire the work she has done for women. I mention the rape crisis centers, that she campaigns for womens rights in Afghanistan, her advocacy for incarcerated women. How she is one of the most popular authors, and *female* authors of all time. I tell them that she wrote Harry Potter in an abusive relationship.

That jk Rowling is an incredibly strong, brave and admirable woman, who made children fall in love with reading the entire world over, gives back to women in need, and i think saying jkr bad because shes criticizing Gender Feelings is a rly narrow view of an entire human and i really do think sharing this changes hearts and minds. At the very least it gets people thinking about what they've been advocating for.

I really do think this is part of why there is so much hatred for GNC women from trans identified males.

We don't need "make-up, hair, clothing, and accessories" to be girls/women because womanhood is simply the experience of being a female.

Having unshaven, bare faced, women around wearing sweatpants and not giving a shit about "looking feminine" while still being unapologetic and unwavering in acknowledging our femaleness draws too much attention to the fact that womanhood is not any of the things these men are claiming it is.

This is why even trans "men"/"mascs" are lambasted by trans "women" when talking about their unique experiences in the trans community. It's because they are female experiences. Remove the make-up, hair, clothing, accessories,- add testosterone, binders, he/him pronouns and a trans "man" will still have an understanding of womanhood that trans "women" will never have access to no matter how many items they buy, drugs they take, or surgeries they get.

They know deep down that womanhood is just the experience of being female and that trans masculinity is also an experience only females can have.

I believe this is also why I'm noticing it become more and more common to see "amab transmasc"s. Any word used to describe an experience unique to the female sex can, will, and must be appropriated by males in the pursuit of becoming us.

What this actually demonstrates is that parents and teachers should talk about consent in age appropriate ways with kids and older kids should have comprehensive sex education that emphasizes health, consent, and risk management.

This person didn’t learn rape was bad from the book they randomly encountered it in. They got that info because they had the kind of relationship with their mom that encouraged honesty and trust and truthful answers and because it occurred to them to ask at all.

OP was much more likely to have read about rape, not told an adult or been dismissed if they did. The likelihood of any hypothetical child that would read something similar and instead internalize the concept of rape as normal adult sexuality is way WAY higher.

I was obsessed with mythology as a child. Which means in was reading about rape in myths constantly. It in no way prevented or helped me to understand my experiences when I was SA’d as a teen. Reading about the rapes of Persephone or of Cassandra or the Gorgons in no way taught me about the complexity of sexual assault in a modern American friend group where the perpetrators were my friends.

More insidious still are that these people aren’t saying out loud that they mean kids should have unfettered access to smut and porn. As if reading a fetishistic telling of a BDSM relationship or watching a video called “Teen slut destroyed by BBC” is the same thing as age appropriate sex education.

The story teller here doesn’t want you to notice that the book itself had almost nothing to do with their learning about consent and CSA. The storyteller also downplayed that a) they had learned about CSA in a different conversation and b) the girl had already been removed from her abusive home.
