Cultural Insights of Our Own: Lessons From a Newly Decoded Digital Archive

Abstract

The recently decoded Internet Archive includes the digital artifact called “Archive of Our Own” (AO3) from early third millennium Earth.  AO3 is unusually well backed up and therefore is presumed to contain some of the most significant -- perhaps even sacred -- texts of the time.  In this paper we present our preliminary analysis of AO3 metadata, including new insights about the literature, gender and sexuality, religion, and scientific understanding of this historical era: 

I. LITERATURE. We describe the cultural centrality of figures such as the Winchesters and Reader.  We explore how they featured heavily in every dominant literature genre of the era, including Fluff, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, and Oral Sex.  

II. GENDER AND SEXUALITY. We review the overwhelming evidence that male-male relationships were the most culturally significant sexual and romantic relationships, but we also show that it was a culture with an unusually broad set of sexual and gender roles.  In particular, we highlight the unusual tripartite conceptualization of gender as including alpha, beta, and omega roles; we note the apparent prejudice against betas, illustrated in the prevalence of “no beta we die like men” and similar protest slogans. 

III. RELIGION. We describe a newly discovered religious taboo: doves were a common sacrificial animal of the time, but they were forbidden from being eaten.  

IV. SCIENCE. Finally, we present new insight about alternate universes.  While previous scholars hypothesized that the scientists of Earth may have developed a correct early theory of the multiverse by the late second millennium, our analysis of AO3 presents evidence to the contrary.  As late as the early third millennium, prevailing theories postulated highly specific universes, such as a universe in which everyone is in high school, or a universe contained within a coffee shop.  

Taken together, these historical insights show that further investigation is warranted into the valuable documents stored within AO3, perhaps even going beyond the metadata to examine the full texts.

Hucklerobby who aren’t even dating but any time they’re together they play stupid little games: I spy, “guess what word I’m thinking of,” and, most notably, the he one where they both have a number and ask questions to figure out what it is. And it inevitably gets especially confusing when they play that one during shift for the first time.

Robby who saunters up to Dennis (who’s been charting next to Trinity) and bends down to ask him, in the most serious voice he can muster, “is this an appropriate number for a white blood cell count?”

Trinity looks up from her computer, gobsmacked at the concept of Robby of all people asking such a basic question about a patient. But he isn’t holding a chart, and Dennis just scrunches his nose like it’s painful then hums.

“No, gosh, no.” He shakes his head, smiling. “Wayyy too low.” He finishes. Robby clicks his tongue, knocking against the counter before walking off. Dennis just returns to what he’s doing while Trinity frowns at him.

Then Dennis squinting against the glaring sun at Robby in the ambulance bay as they wait on an incoming trauma with Mel and Javadi in tow.

“If I had, like, this amount of knives. Would you think I was a deranged murderer?” He asks, twirling his hand in front of him as he speaks. Javadi looks up with a slack jaw, and Mel frowns at them. Yet Robby snorts, shaking his head no.

“No, I think you’d be in the clear.”

And Robby who grabbed Dennis by the shoulder as soon as they finished rounding and very seriously inquired-

“If I had this many pairs of shoes how inconvenient would it be?”

Dennis takes a second to consider, snorting at the concept.

“Horribly.”

Robby smiles. “Is your number seriously one?”

To which Dennis gawks, shoving Robby playfully.

“How’d you guess that?!”

Trinity’s groan rings out loud enough that it draws both their attention, when she speaks, it’s a yell.

“That’s seriously what you two dumbasses have been talking about all day?”

Bonus:

After they do finally get together and new med students start flowing in, everyone leaves them to figure out the game for themselves too. It’s very confusing to them..

I get in theory why people complain about het ships or whatever, I get wanting to watch queer media I really do, but I guess where y’all lose me is like. I saw some asshole on a post about Sinners complaining it was “hetslop”—this person was specifically doing so while also claiming Remmick was a queer character and thus they were justified in caring more about him than the Black protagonists. which is a whole other disgusting can of worms that has been well addressed by others at this point. but even in the absence of that part of the argument, like, no, i actually don’t think that a hunger for queer stories is an especially good excuse to deride and dismiss a piece of landmark Black filmmaking, especially as a non-Black person. I have a post that’s been going around encouraging folks to engage with more Native stories and characters, and I had someone come onto that post saying in the tags that they’d need these stories to be queer in order to care. and I just think that, you know, sucks! like obviously as a queer Native I also want to see more of those stories too. but idk how else to put it other than to say that Black people and people of color shouldn’t have to be like you in order for you to care about our narratives and experiences. and I think some of y’all are using this disdain for heterosexuality as a cover for your unexamined racial biases. it’s not okay to be racist to people just because those people happen to be straight, and you continue to be white before you are queer.

on an even more basic level than that, also, I simply just think some of y’all NEED to learn how to interact with media and storytelling without ships and fandom in mind. like if not being able to write fic about two men kissing is genuinely going to be a dealbreaker for you I think that’s actually something you need to work on within yourself because at that point I think you’re no longer really interacting with art and themes and narrative so much as just kind of playing with toys. which is, like, fine I guess. have fun. but it wouldn’t kill you to disengage from that from time to time. especially if would allow you to actually appreciate rich and deeply moving cultural stories from communities of color that you desperately need to learn how to see as human
