So I reread the book lately for my podcast, and what’s interesting is that Carrie doesn’t even set out to kill anyone at first. She wants to make the sprinklers go off so that everyone else gets drenched the way she did. Carrie actually leaves the prom, goes and lies on the front lawn, then thinks, “Hey, I have psychic powers, and I can totally accomplish this reverse prank.” The only thing is the use of her psychic abilities degrades her ability to reason (no, really, that’s something King explicitly wrote out). So when she locks the doors on everyone and then sets off t he sprinklers, it causes an electrical fire. But Carrrie’s doing so much psychic work (you could say “carrying such a heavy mental load”) that she’s unable to reason beyond the fact that the fire will also punish these people who just laughed at her for getting covered in blood. And once that happens, Carrie’s like, “hey, fire’s such a great idea. You know who could use more of it? This entire fucking town.”

So are we just going to completely ignore that carry went on a rampage killing completely innocent classmates, teachers, and even people she never met who were just attending the prom? Only a small handful of people who she killed actually bullied her. If she had only targetted that small handful of people, she would have been extreme, but it would have at least been more justifiable. On top of that, while what happened to her at the prom was sad, and the bullies did accidentally murder someone, it doesn’t excuse the fact she killed people who weren’t even involved in it and weren’t even laughing at her. The laughing was even implied to all just be in her head. There is no way you can justify her killing everyone around her and burning down her school. Even if you were to ignore all of these things and just write off all of her deaths as an accident, she still murdered them and continued on her rampage well after leaving the prom. I have no doubts she would have continued to tear through the town if it wasn’t for her heart exploding from using her powers too much.

Carrie absolutely is a villain, just a very tragic one. It’s fine to feel bad for her, but saying she did nothing wrong is a flat-out lie. She took things WAAAY too far.

It’s one of those things where you can just watch her go right up to the deep end and fall off. She could have been justified, could have been something other than horrible…

But at that last moment when holding back would have been sane, she didn’t (couldn’t) and thus went from justified to Monster. And that’s kinda an important point.

I’ve read part of the book (I can never make it all the way through a Stephen King novel) and have seen one of the older movies and the one that came out in 2013.

While in the extreme a lot of it reminded me of the way I was treated in school growing up (to the point even other kids in middle school said I remained them of her) and living with my grandmother.

The thing about Carrie isnt whether Carrie is justified or not, the horror is that it happened at all. Its tragic because it could have been completely avoided if not for the combination of Carrie’s abusive mother and classmates. Only the one girl and her boyfriend were ever activly nice to Carrie. Everyone else either bullied her or ignored her, because she was odd, but also ignored what her mother and classmates were doing to her.

On that note I can see the comparison to Carrie and Joker 2019 regardless of how the media treated either of them.

Yeah a lot of movies like this where the “protagonist” ends up being the “villain” of the story isn’t about whether or not their actions were the right thing to do or justified.

Dont get me wrong. I still adore the dude, and he is my best friend to this day. But we were NOT going to work out in the long run.

I want a family at some point. I like sex. Being in a relationship like that made me feel very unwanted and unattractive. It got to me. It started to destory the relationship more and more. My self-esteem dropped to nothing while dating him. He tried his best, but he wasnt comfortable doing things that would help me feel better. I wasnt getting the attention I needed.

I was with him for 5 ½ years. He is my best friend. But this was not going to work.

Yea outside of TBBT he’s been a huge queer advocate, and shuts down homophobic bullshit. Like for example when Love, Simon came out and everyone was like “don’t we have enough of this/isn’t it too late for this?” He was like “do you people say that about every straight rom com that comes out??”

Plus his work outside of TBBT has mostly BEEN queer shit, including being in a movie about how shit the government was in regards to the AIDS crisis.

This is not true.

1) honeybees do not produce “extra honey.” And beekeepers don’t take some of the honey, they take all of it.

2) chickens have been artificially selected from naturally producing eggs once a month to producing eggs every couple of days. Their bodies are not sustainable and the health complications of this rapid egg production kills chickens.

Beekeepers make sure hives are fed before there is pollen in the air, protected from predators and the elements, and have enough honey to sustain themselves. We don’t take all of it.

But overproduction of honey leads to stagnation in the hive. It puts stress on the queen to lay eggs, and when they inevitably fill up all their space with honey (instead of filling up the multiple empty, clean boxes of frames beekeepers might put on top of the main hive box), the queen can get so stressed she dies. If there’s a spike in the weather and the hive hasn’t prepared new queen brood, that’s it! The colony is dead. Because there wasn’t enough space for eggs and honey in the hive.

Beekeepers take excess honey. We are constantly monitoring the state of the hive, checking for parasites, analyzing the eggs for diseases, and making sure they are fed and healthy (usually with sugar water and pollen substitutes until they have made enough honey to sustain themselves in the early spring months). If a queen dies prematurely, we make every attempt to replace her to save the colony.

I know there’s an urge to patronize everyone who works in the farming industry, but try to understand the differences between small scale agriculture and industrial farming. There IS a difference. And stop spreading misinformation.

If you’re this passionate about ethical consumption, look into some of the ecofeminist research on non-hierarchal interspecies relationships (working on building animal-human relationships in a non exploitative way).

Yea Chickens are some of the most abused animals on big factory farms and I’ll be the first to admit it’s criminal and more needs to be done to regulate this.

Yes selective breeding over time has caused an increase in the ammount of eggs produced by chickens and factory farms have some messed up practices to get more eggs from them including forced moutling.

THIS IS WHY YOU SUPPORT LOCAL FARMERS AND THEIR EGGS

Many people take to raising their own hens because of America’s immoral treatment of hens in factory farms like you’re not helping the poor chicks by starving these farmers financially you’re just hurting the one people trying to change things and making the OPTION of cage free organic cruelty free eggs even harder to find
