I'm sorry to say this but if, after ostensibly reading a bunch of transfeminism, your reaction to a trans woman having a bad take on transfeminist issues is to take it as permission to attack the person rather than trying to break down where the take goes wrong in a way that prioritizes minimizing harm, then you really need to ask yourself why that is.
Look, all I'm saying is that it's very easy to go "you should just tell people the entire truth about everything all the time with no simplifications and no accounting for the recipient's familiarity with the subject" if you simply know a lot less about stuff than you think you do.
Look, if the choice is between "[Theoretical framework] inevitably leads to transmisogyny even when it leads to correct observations elsewhere" and "Transmisogyny is a source of bias so strong that even experts in [theoretical framework] would rather be transmisogynist than right" then I'm choosing the latter every time, because I refuse to humor the idea that transmisogyny is anything other than an incorrect position across all viable ways of understanding reality.
general relativity for babies
babies? Hell, I’m an adult this is the clearest and most understandable explaination I’ve ever seen. This book is for anyone
the novelty of having pets really does never wear off i’ve had my cat for ten years and i still look at him strolling around like can you believe this. a cat. is everyone seeing this. he’s alive he has bones and all. unbelievable
All I know is that six year old me REALLY wanted Xena/Lucy Lawless to come stand behind me with this expression when someone was bullying me.
Basically my primary frustration with a lot of mainstream left-ish framings of trans issues is the treatment of trans rights as a concession they're making to be nice, rather than a principled stance grounded in a real, material understanding of the world.
It leads to this attitude of being vaguely embarrassed to support trans people, which crumbles when Right Wing Dipshit Pundit #33145 starts going on about "harsh truths" that a competent advocate could call out for being incorrect.
ALL. OF. THIS.
Yet another new study debunked the basis for the anti-trans sports bans. It was never about sports but for creating legal avenues for exclusion and abjection. This is one of the largest analyses ever conducted, involving 52 studies and 6,485 trans people. Read the study here.
post so nice had to reblog it twice and force it down everyone's throats
At minimum about 4.5 thousand people liked this without reblogging it.
We gotta fix that.
Progress.
Onwards!
I can't access the full paper, but their conclusion is right there in the abstract:
While transgender women exhibited higher lean mass than cisgender women, their physical fitness was comparable. Current evidence is mostly low certainty and has heterogenous quality but does not support theories of inherent athletic advantages for transgender women over cisgender.
Some narratives in international development hold that ending poverty and achieving good lives for all will require every country to reach t
The conclusion, and one of the harder hitting parts of the article. Solving poverty does not require complex solutions and long timeframes.
I'm reminded of that one part in Frederick Douglass's autobiography where he gets to the north for the first time and assumed, since they didn't have slaves, that everyone was about as poor as non-slaveowning white southerners. And they weren't! There were poor people, sure, but there were lots of people living very comfortably or in luxury.
He mentions how angry it made him, that not only were thousands and thousands of people suffering to create luxury for a few, but that slavery wasn't even necessary for wealth to exist. That's really stuck with me.
First image description (edited from alt text):
screenshot of a tweet by @pot8um: “Does anyone have that recent study that determined all 8 billion of us could be easily housed and fed with only 30% of the current global labor output and that our collective suffering is manufactured by capitalism...”
reply by @jasonhickel: “Yes: sciencedirect.com/... [a url that is cut off in the screenshot]” and an attached image of text:
“With this approach, good lives can be achieved for all without requiring large creases in total global throughput and output. Provisioning decent living standards (DLS) for 8.5 billion people would require only 30% of current global resource and energy use, leaving a substantial surplus for additional consumption, public luxury, scientific advancement, and other social investments. Such a future requires planning to” [text is cut off here].
Second image transcription:
Poverty is not an intractable problem that requires complex solutions, long timeframes and large increases in production and throughput that conflict with ecological objectives. The solution is straightforward. We need to actively plan to shift productive capacities away from capital accumulation and elite consumption in order to focus instead on the goods and services that are necessary to meet human needs and enable decent living for all, while ensuring universal access through public provisioning systems. We have framed this work around the concept of human needs, following the recent literature. However it is important to underscore that this approach is ultimately about far more than just satisfying material requirements for human well-being. Achieving decent-living for all is critical to enabling broader human capabilities, individual and collective self-realisation, full participation in society and politics and, ultimately, freedom.
listen i consider myself an empathic person but after a certain point i get sick of other people’s problems. my friend is always talking about how the jewel-eyed skull on their mantlepiece is tormenting them w its sinister beauty and im over it. like dude i don’t want to talk about this anymore. get rid of the fucking skull
you’ are biased against my skull
i’m not having this argument again man
Think tanks explicitly founded to "abolish transgenderism" will publish a report that's like "there's no evidence that trans healthcare works if you ignore all the evidence" and be taken seriously, meanwhile actual researchers go "there's seriously NO evidence that gatekeeping helps" and get ignored
Like on the one hand there's new papers each year going "So it turns out that there's literally no fucking reason to restrict transition access based on these arbitrary criteria, and in fact, they were explicitly made up by some Danish fuck because he was personally obsessed with the idea that trans people were demons, and as it turns out the only measurable impacts of this policy are to increase risks to the patient" that have no impact on the healthcare systems they're criticizing whatsoever.
And then, on the other hand, you've got "Shockingly, this life-altering treatment that massively impacts how the patient is perceived by others in all facets of life is primarily supported by observational studies, as opposed to the enormous violations of bodily autonomy and human dignity necessary to perform a true randomized control trial. We recommend that treatment ceases immediately because you don't understand how evidence-based medicine works." And that becomes a linchpin of the politics of multiple European countries' trans healthcare politics for the next several years.
It's fucking clown world. Nobody who enabled this should be in a position of any power whatsoever.
Welcome to the June Dialogue & Trope Challenge! (Also my first time ever doing one so forgive me if there's any mistakes)
Each day includes two prompts: ✦ A line of dialogue ✦ A trope
The dialogue and trope won't always seem like they fit together—and that's intentional! The fun is figuring out how to connect them. Maybe the dialogue is spoken by the hero. Maybe it's the villain. Maybe it's a memory, a lie, a prophecy, or something else entirely.
Interpret the prompts however you like: ✦ Any fandom or original characters ✦ Any genre ✦ Any length ✦ Any rating (just tag appropriately) ✦ Mix and match genres, tropes, and settings
If you participate, feel free to tag your work with #JuneDialogueTropeChallenge (long I know) so everyone can find and share each other's creations.
Happy writing!
