Some things that make me feel unsafe in public

- being asked if I’m Jewish because of the way my hair looks - being interrogated about my personal political beliefs because I am identifiably Jewish - being expected to denounce and apologize for Israel every time I want to be Jewish in public - being told “I don’t hate Jews, but I’m pro-Palestine” in response to my Jewishness - being told I’m going to hell for being Jewish - non-Jews dictating to me what does and does not constitute antisemitism - people who are not me and who don’t look like me engaging in endless debate about what “race” I belong to - white supremacists telling me that I “control the world” and “should go back to Germany” while folks on the left tell me I benefit from white supremacy - having to make a choice between queerness and Judaism

Noticeably absent from this list: - seeing others’ religious symbols on display in public

so exodus says that aaron stretched out his hand over the waters and the frog came up and covered the land of egypt and while english translators usually render “frog” as “frogs,” today at shul the rabbi challenged us to consider whether it could in fact have been one giant frog so we spent literally forty-five minutes arguing about whether there were swarms of frogs from the beginning or rather a single monstrous godzilla frog that split into multiple frogs once people started trying to destroy it and the congregation got so worked up that even after we’d sung aleinu and were heading out of the sanctuary people were still excitedly debating the moral implications of one frog versus many so what i’m trying to say is @judaism never change

As someone with multiple bilingual friends where English is not the first language, may I present to you a list of actual incidents I have witnessed:

Forgot a word in Spanish, while speaking Spanish to me, but remembered it in English. Became weirdly quiet as they seemed to lose their entire sense of identity.

Used a literal translation of a Russian idiomatic expression while speaking English. He actually does this quite regularly, because he somehow genuinely forgets which idioms belong to which language. It usually takes a minute of everyone staring at him in confused silence before he says “….Ah….. that must be a Russian one then….”

Had to count backwards for something. Could not count backwards in English. Counted backwards in French under her breath until she got to the number she needed, and then translated it into English.

Meant to inform her (French) parents that bread in America is baked with a lot of preservatives. Her brain was still halfway in English Mode so she used the word “préservatifes.” Ended up shocking her parents with the knowledge that apparently, bread in America is full of condoms.

Defined a slang term for me……. with another slang term. In the same language. Which I do not speak.

Was talking to both me and his mother in English when his mother had to revert to Russian to ask him a question about a word. He said “I don’t know” and turned to me and asked “Is there an English equivalent for Нумизматический?” and it took him a solid minute to realize there was no way I would be able to answer that. Meanwhile his mom quietly chuckled behind his back.

Said an expression in English but with Spanish grammar, which turned “How stressful!” into “What stressing!”

Bilingual characters are great but if you’re going to use a linguistic blunder, you have to really understand what they actually blunder over. And it’s usually 10x funnier than “Ooops it’s hard to switch back.”

Fucking same

As a person who grew up speaking both Greek and English and then later learned Spanish, when speaking Spanish with native Spanish speakers who do not speak English I will often forget the Spanish word for something and say the Greek word instead.

I do this in Hebrew with Spanish words. My Hebrew is nowhere near fluent, but my Spanish is pretty close, so those words pop up more when my brain knows I’m not speaking English.

My Japanese and Spanish are roughly equal, and when talking to someone in Japanese, I’ve definitely accidentally pivoted into Spanish. But when it happens, it’s because there’s a word or grammatical construct that happens to be common-ish to the two. Like, “kasa” in Japanese is umbrella, but I learned “casa” for house first, so on rainy days, my switching tends to happen more. Also, both have a tendency to end imperatives with -te, so the only thing saving me there is SOV vs SVO.

I speak a few languages. My problem is when I have to switch between 2 non native languages. I once started speaking Spanish to a Tibetan shop keeper and Tibetan to my brother. This did not work well for anyone. And then my brain just turns to jelly and I usually make an agonized screaming noise. My brain is a standard vehicle. Do not switch languages without a clutch.
