Hey, my name is Charlie, I'm an artist and writer. I'm currently writing a FNAF Fanstory called "Frights and Friends", and I plan on starting to do art commissions eventually.

Our last post

Hola, i'm Calli, a nonbinary mexican parent. Both my partner and I are chronically ill, we're the main providers for our family of 9, that includes his mom, dad and sister because they lost everything in a fire back in November 2023. TW for the house after the fire.

We are poor and unemployed, all adults have some chronic condition, chronic pain and we live constantly exposed to mold, rust and other issues the house has. The landlord does jackshit but sure comes to collect rent every now and then.

To top it off i have been getting harrassed by racist unkind people here, making me suicidal.

i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is “international” pride month just because something happened in the united states.

in aotearoa, june isn’t our pride, it’s theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that “you owe your rights to Black trans women” is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Māori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.

But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa don’t even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we don’t.

our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.

anyway, happy pride, americans. i’m truly sorry that most of you don’t see the negative impact your nation’s culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and culture’s queer history, don’t accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.

Addition: While we do see the appeal of an international pride day / month, I really don't think it should have to do with the US. We were realizing this about our own culture (how much we don't know despite knowing Stonewall exists and shit) just a couple days ago.

International unity is extremely important, especially for the queer community, where often people will turn to online spaces when their irl spaces fail them and when there's not enough irl representation. Having a common month to celebrate sounds incredibly important to anyone who finds community over the Internet. But Idk, maybe the month of the first bill passing that *ever* legalized gay marriage, or something (that's arbitrary and just my first thought, but that'd be April 1st, 2001, Netherlands) would be much more fitting than anything US centric.

Also, I second this: Seek to learn your local pride history and culture!

While back to America Centric, this doesn't even apply to other countries in the Americas. I'm Canadian. If we want to celebrate pride related to us, it could be May 15th, as that's the day homosexuality was decriminalized in Canada in 1969.

August as the first nationally organized pride matches took place simultaneously in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Saskatoon and Winnipeg in 1973.

The bathhouse raids could be treated the same as stonewall and that was in February. This was the largest mass arrest in Canadian history. And specifically targeted gay men.

Bill C-38 2005 which legalized gay marriage in Canada was signed into law in July.

March we had bill C-279 which extended human rights to transgender and transexual people in 2013.

May again is when Bill C-16 2017 passed which officially made gender identity and gender expression protected classes.
