Instead of Eva Stratt singing karaoke, the movie should have had the court scene! That would have been perfect!
It was so out of character for Stratt to be like "I believe in god. Also, imma gonna sing!" that I completely lost immersion harder than if the movie had injected a fucking commercial break.
I reblogged this yesterday, but I want to reblog it again. Diabetic ketoacidosis turns your blood acidic and will essentially burn you from the inside out.
The stories you hear of people dying from rationing, this is what happens to their body.
Affordable insulin isn’t just a right, it’s a necessity.
No one should have to die like that when it’s preventable with access to proper medication.
the thing about being "good with kids" is all it takes is literally just not trying to control and mould them with every interaction. it's just being a normal person and engaging with them through normal interactions like having conversations and playing games. it's just being genuine and friendly and not perceiving them as lumps of wet clay you are there to shape. "oh you're so good with kids" thanks it's because I think they are people
I made that same spring simulation once, making a simple water wave you can see from the side. Now I'm tempted to try and build this in SDL or something.
for those who don't speak academia: "according to our MRI machine, dead fish can recognise human emotions. this suggests we probably should look at the results of our MRI machine a bit more carefully"
So basically, in the psych and social science fields, researchers would (I don't know if they still do this, I've been out of science for awhile) sling around MRIs like microbiolosts sling around metagenomic analyses. MRIs can measure a lot but people would use them to measure 'activity' in the brain which is like... it's basically the machine doing a fuckload of statistics on brain images of your blood vessels while you do or think about stuff. So you throw a dude in the machine and take a scan, then give him a piece of chocolate cake and throw him back in and the pleasure centres light up. Bam! Eating chocolate makes you happy, proven with MRI! Simple!
These tests get used for all kinds of stuff, and they get used by a lot of people who don't actually know what they're doing, how to interpret the data, or whether there's any real link between what they're measuring and what they're claiming. It's why you see shit going around like "men think of women as objects because when they look at a woman, the same part of their brain is active as when they look at a tool!" and "if you play Mozart for your baby for twenty minutes then their imagination improves, we imaged the brain to prove it!" and "we found where God is in the brain! Christians have more brain activity in this region than atheists!"
There are numerous problems with this kind of science, but the most pressing issue is the validity of the scans themselves. As I said, there's a fair bit of stats to turn an MRI image into 'brain activity', and then you do even more stats on that to get your results. Bennett et. al.'s work ran one of these sorts of experiments, with one difference -- they used a dead salmon instead of living human subjects. And they got positive results. The same sort of experiment, the same methodology, the same results that people were bandying about as positive results. According to the methodology in common use, dead salmon can distinguish human facial expressions. Meaning one of two things:
Dead salmon can recognise human facial expressions. OR
Everyone else's results are garbage also, none of you have data for any of this junk.
I cannot overstate just how many papers were completely fucking destroyed by this experiment. Entire careers of particularly lazy scientists were built on these sorts of experiments. A decent chunk of modern experimental neuropsychology was resting on it. Which shows that science is like everything else -- the best advances are motivated by spite.
90% of "teen brain" science is based on MRI bullshit also. these fish just disproved "brain stops developing at 25", as if it needed disproving again. well done fish
Also, “partner” is just a good word? It implies an equal relationship where both of your work together in pursuit of something, whether that be life goals or just having fun together.
The deuteranomaly and protanomaly ones are very similar but they are different. The purple section ranges out a little farther to the right in the protanomaly one. Not seeing the difference between might not indicate color blindness but rather difficulty with color differentiation.
Yes, those ARE different. In the Tritanomaly one, the green range of color is much more washed out, more of a pale blending of yellow and blue instead of true distinct green.
Also looks like the tritanomaly folks see a less orange and a brighter red, which is interesting!
Interesting to see this. Not color blind. Each pair of bars was slightly different, but also... It doesn't look like there's a good universally good set of colors to pick for things like game design, just generally best palette choices.
Car Trunk vs Car Boot: A clear win for US English, trunk was already a thing in which you stored items, frequently for transport.
Crisps vs Chips: I gotta admit, the Brits have this one. They're thin slices of potato that have been made crispy. No chipping of any materials involved.
Car Park vs Parking Lot: Equally matched. What's a car park? A place to park cars. What's a parking lot? An otherwise empty lot where you can park.
Elevator vs Lift: Both equally fail to address that the damn thing also goes down.
Businesses are not people. They are machines. Do not ever give a business loyalty, nor any more respect than you would give to a household appliance.
Their own employees are nothing but replaceable tools/parts to them. Their customers are just a resource to exploit. Whether you are a customer or an employee, treat them like the tool they will treat you as.
And of course, always treat the people with respect, patience, and understanding. Show loyalty to your friends. Always give respect to your fellow human beings by default.
For anyone curious what brought this on: A friend of mine, after 15 years, was just let go because his company decided to cut an old product. They gave the classic, gutless excuse of "it's just business" despite the fact that cutting off a person's income is one of the most personal and viscerally life threatening things you could possibly do.
They didn't try to move him to a different department or anything, even though he was already cross training and things were going very well.
When I recently inquired about job openings for myself I found out he was well liked, and seen by his peers and managers as highly skilled. I was told "I miss having [friend] in my department but am happy he's where he is." My friend said that the cross training was making him feel "more a part of the team than ever".
He had no reason to assume his career would be ending. He was liked, valued by his peers, appreciated by his managers, and had usable knowledge of both the company's legacy and current products.
A higher up in the company decided that the department working on their legacy software was no longer needed and all related assets had to go. Since that was technically where my friend worked, despite the cross training, and especially despite the 15 years of loyalty and specialized company expertise, he was also cut. All without warning a cookie days ago. He showed up for a normal day of work, for a normal and routine one-on-one, only to find his supervisor robotically reading a prewritten script about how "the company deeply values your hard work but is going to have to let you go."
This is a story I have not only heard countless times, but have lived through myself. It sucks. It's cruel. It literally threatens a person's fucking life because our country lacks any serious government provided protections against starvation and homelessness, and it happens all the time!
It literally doesn't matter how skilled or liked you are at your job! You can, and if there long enough, eventually will be let go for one reason or another. You are practically guaranteed to lose your job at some point, likely on the whim of an executive you've never met. Hence this reminder.
Do not treat businesses as anything more than a machine made to serve your interests! That's exactly how they will treat you!
idk what young person on the internet needs to hear this but you are not obligated to share any personal details about yourself online. in fact im gonna straight-up circle back to 00s era advice and say being anonymous is good actually
Sharing personal information about yourself on the Internet used to be so fucking taboo that I was literally left shaking the first time someone asked me what my name was. Facebook was the weirdest thing. A complete flip of deeply rooted Internet safety norms and culture.
for me being bi has contributed a huge amount to noticing all the ways in which romance and friendship run together and i think in general people would benefit from recognizing that romance and friendship are socially constructed categories used to describe a vast, nebulous, and often overlapping range of feelings
Every Relationship is actually a specific, unique thing. We invented Shorthands, such as Friend or Husband, to help describe recurring motifs in Relationships. But. The labels are simplifications. They will always fail to adequately contain the entirety of the Relationship.
this is actually HILARIOUS because both domestic rabbits and domestic cats practice dominance-related social grooming but for wildly different reasons.
if you're a rabbit, the boss rabbit is the one who gets groomed by its subordinate rabbits.
but if you're a cat... the boss cat is the one that grooms the other cats.
BOTH these idiots are going "aw yeah, it's good to be on top >:) "
