The only fool I see is YOU. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
Anti-Mom: You shouldn’t not-complain because there’re always people who have it better.
Anti-Mom: It’s okay if you don’t finish your plate because you’re only human and the vast majority of food waste comes from corporations and government organizations throwing it away, and not households.
Anti-Dad: As long as you live under my roof, we will communicate and negotiate the terms and rules together to make it the most pleasant living experience for the both of us.

England, you stole tea from China. You’ve had it a mere 4 centuries compared to their 30+. Don’t play like you’re some kind of authority.

Getting Away With Murder
I have a bee in my bonnet again about Cassie hate in Animorphs fandom. One thing that Cassie haters like to say about Cassie is that she’s allowed to “get away with murder” – she does a lot of very risky and morally dubious things that end up working out in her favor, most notoriously her decision to give up the morphing cube to Tom’s Yeerk. This is undoubtedly true. However, it is also true for all the other Animorphs. At various points in the series, they all get to take incredibly stupid risks and make very morally questionable decisions that end up working out astoundingly well. So here are some times when Animorphs besides Cassie got away with murder.
Marco gets away with incredibly blinkered judgment about his mother throughout the series. HIs terrible, emotionally compromised decisions about her should have gotten her killed a hundred times over: blowing up the Royan Island facility in book 15, his elaborate murder plot in book 30, the harebrained rescue in book 45. He also completely got away with lying to his dad about Nora being a Controller – that never bites him in the ass afterward.
Ax cozies up to wildly morally questionable Andalites over and over again throughout the series (8, 18, 38) and it never got his human friends hurt or killed, or even seriously messed up the trajectory of the war (the Andalites probably would have come to destroy the Earth at the end regardless.) He also plays nuclear chicken with Visser Two, showing his willingness to turn Santa Barbara (or whatever city Animorphs is in) into the next Hiroshima, and he manages to get away with it without any negative consequences.
Tobias commits genocide on the Mercora in MM2 on a guess (not a certainty, but a guess) that this is necessary in order to end the age of dinosaurs and assure the evolution of humans as a species. His guess turns out to be right and everything works out as he expected.
Not to mention all of the various times that the Animorphs risked exposing their true identities to Controllers in order to commit random acts of ecoterrorism (what if Josep the elephant tamer in book 7 had been a Controller? what if there had been a Controller at the Rainforest Cafe in book 15?) So why is it that when Cassie gets away with murder, this is bad writing and a reason to hate her, but when the other Animorphs get away with murder, it’s completely excusable and okay?
1. All the yes to this post; in this house we love and support Cassie.
2. I find the phrase “get away with” really interesting in the context of Animorphs. Like, I’ve seen it before with regard to Cassie, but also fans (especially Redditors?) say Jake “got away with” flushing the Pool ship or Rachel “got away with” killing David. And I guess my question would be: what would not getting away with it look like within the framework of Animorphs?
This isn’t a series with any kind of moral authority the kids can lean on. It’s not a series where anything in the books ever provides a good answer about what “right” and “wrong” are in context. This isn’t even a series where (unlike the vast majority of fiction) people get what they deserve and deserve what they get. in Animorphs, doing the right thing doesn’t usually get rewarded, and doing the wrong thing doesn’t usually get punished.
To go with the Cassie example, what consequences could she face for saving Tom’s life? For her whole team to be mad at her, for her romantic relationship to fall apart, for her to question herself for the rest of her life, for her to express fear and regret? All of that already happens in canon. For her to go to prison as punishment, or for Dumbledore to come in at the end of the book and scold her for not doing better? I have no idea what series y’all are reading, but Animorphs does not take place in that kind of world.
To use Dumbledore as a handy point of contrast: I think a big part of the backlash about Albus Severus Potter comes from the fact that Harry Potter does take place in a just world where people get what they deserve and deserve what they get. Yes, some good characters suffer or die, but when they do, they’re mourned and lauded for their legacies. And the majority of bad characters end up dead or in prison, while the majority of good ones live happily 19 years later. That’s not a bad thing — it’s part of what makes Harry Potter so cathartic to read, it shows readers why hurting others for personal gain is bad, and it’s deeply satisfying when the characters we love get rewarded. However, it also means that Dumbledore and Snape getting the legacy moment in the epilogue acts as an implied approval of their canon actions. JKR decided that these men get a reward, and JKR (who has backed this up in interviews) thus believes that these men deserve a reward.
In Animorphs, either we go with the read that KAA hates her own protagonists (which begs the question of why she’d bother to write 60+ books about them) or we conclude that Animorphs is not a series where people deserve what they get and get what they deserve. Jake “gets away with” murdering 17,000 yeerks in the sense that he never goes to prison for it, but by that token almost everyone in the entire series “gets away with” at least a few murders. Visser Three is the only character ever sent to prison for his crimes, and Visser One is the only character ever executed for them. Heck, even then Visser One gets sentenced to death because she’s not enthusiastic enough about enslaving other species, so even she doesn’t really count.
Animorphs isn’t a series based on showing what’s right; it’s a series based on showing what’s realistic. It’s not right that all the Animorphs end up traumatized and/or dead, but it’s a realistic portrayal of war. It’s not right that Rachel’s described as “forgotten” after her death in spite of Jake’s best efforts, but it’s meant to parallel the way media talk about celebrities and “heroes.” It’s not right that there’s no mention of war reparations for the yeerk hosts, to the point where the taxxons and hork-bajir practically have to fight a second war just to get enough food and land to survive, but it’s supposed to be more about the way the U.S. treats marginalized groups than about what they deserve.
I could go into a whole aside here about how I got into so many disagreements in my early fandalite days because people took my saying it’s realistic for the yeerks to become whales et al after the series as meaning I thought it’s right for that to happen, but I digress. Point being: I agree with @featherquillpen that the logical followup to the question “Does Cassie get away with murder?” would be “In Animorphs, who doesn’t?”
Epi Pen PSA -- could save a life!
In addition to my breast cancer, I have the joy of multiple autoimmune diseases. One of them causes me to have anaphylaxis to myself, so in addition to the bi-weekly cancer chemo I receive monthly Immunotherapy. They will not administer it at your appointment unless you have your Epi Pens with you, because the Immunotherapy itself can cause anaphylaxis and you may need it on the ride home.
I had Immunotherapy Monday, and as the chemo fog has fried my brain, I decided to get out my box and check on when my Epi Pens expire while I was sitting there for my 30 minute post delivery observation, My Nurse noticed me looking at the box, and I told her I was checking the expiration date.
She walked over and told me the date I was looking at was only the expiration date of the prescription, not the actual Epinephrine syringe. Where I live, pill bottles and the like typically say “Drug Z, Filled 1-2-33,Good until 1-2-34, 5 refills expires 1-2-34” so Drug Z was good for a year and so was the prescription.
The tag on my Epi Pen box said “Filled 4-10-19 Expires 4-10-20”
She told me that Epi Pens were different, the tag on the box was the date for the prescription expiration only. The medication, the actual Epinephrine expiration dates were only on the syringes themselves. She then proceeded to open the box, remove the sheaths, open them and remove the syringes, and show me the expiration dates.
My Epi Pens had been dispensed in April 2019, and had expired in July of 2019. My Epi Pens, on which my life might depend, had expired SEVEN FREAKING MONTHS AGO. They had had a lifespan of three months.
I was angry, and horrified. They immediately sent a new scrip to my pharmacy of course and I thanked her for telling me as it potentially could have saved my life. I also asked her to inform every single patient who came in that office, and she will.
She told me that every single time I pick up an Epi Pen prescription, immediately go sit in one of the waiting chairs, open up the box, and check the dates on the syringes. If it’s not a year, go back up and demand they take them back and order new syringes with a one year life span, as typically we are renewing them with a few days lee way either way once we know the true expiration date..
If for some reason they refuse call your insurance company and they should raise hell. Apparently this is legal because when the pharmacy gets a scrip and orders the pens, the manufacturer is not sending expired merchandise. And of course, if there’s an issue, the consumer didn’t fulfill their responsibility to check the expiration date.
Two years ago, I anaphylaxed alone at home. It progressed fast, and as soon as I unlocked the front door and called 911, I delivered a pen through my jeans into my thigh. It didn’t stop the progress. They gave me a dose of Epi, and a giant dose of steroids in the ambulance, and they met us with an intubation kit at the hospital.
The responders and Docs in the ED at first were wondering if I had delivered the pen properly of course, but as they quickly removed my clothes they saw the syringe bruise and the drop of dried blood right in the right place. For the remainder of my hospital stay they couldn’t figure out why the Epi Pen hadn’t stopped or at least slowed it down. That’s what they do, they don’t reverse it.
Now I look back and wonder. I had tossed the used pen in the trash immediately, and thrown out the other in it’s box when I came home from the hospital with a new two pack. What if the syringe I had used had expired six or seven or nine months before? What if my new kit had expired four months later?
I am furious, and frightened for those who don’t know, I’ve already contacted my best friend for her husband, and my niece for her little girl. I will be contacting my GP to see if he knew this and every one else I know eventually, and asking them to spread the word.
Check your Epi Pens, tell every one you know, and please signal boost this and REBLOG IT to spread the word.
Thanks guys, and be well. Love xXx
Hey guys, this is something to go check and fix right now.

@thebibliosphere, you probably already know about this, maybe some of your followers could use this info?
Welp, I’m off to check my new Epi-pens cause I’ve been using the date on the box this whole time.
10 Coronavirus myths debunked by this smart guy.
dr. maheswaran: did anything particularly bad or traumatic happen to you during your childhood?
steven:
When Dr. Maheswaran asked Steven about "bad experiences" from the past, and he mentioned the cookie cat ice cream sandwiches being discontinued, he wasn't just making a joke or deflecting. He could only pinpoint the beginning of the first episode because he'd normalized and dissociated from his trauma. But Cookie Cats acted as a trigger; once he remembered Cookie Cats, he remembered encountering Centipeedle that same day, leading to a domino effect of flashbacks (The Realization was so heartbreaking, because I know that exact feeling).
Also considering the opening nightmare of In Dreams, Cookie Cat seems to be one of the most explicit of his trauma triggers. I think the most obvious we get to see in the main series is the heel-turn in his behavior towards Holo-Pearl.
It's almost a painful irony, because the role of Cookie Cats in the first episode's plot was as a positive trigger for summoning his shield because they made him so happy, marking the start of the gems letting him participate in their activities.
Cookie Cats were the beginning of Steven's chronic trauma as a child soldier.

prince zuko got you all out here thinking every dark haired antagonist boy is gonna do right in the end when zuzu was the exception not the rule
I really wish it weren’t though? I think it’s really telling that a lot of people like redemption arcs because we want to see people be good despite their pasts. The fact that there are so little redemption arcs in media is very upsetting because it just sends the message that people can’t change which we know is not true. I absolutely don’t mean this for characters like Kylo Ren though lol
Redemption arcs are hard and Zuko’s was successful for a couple of reasons:
1) Zuko wasn’t the worst character in the Fire Nation. From really early on it was shown that, compared to Zhao, Azula, and other Fire Nation leaders, Zuko was consistently more noble. He tried to be a good person and do the right thing, even when doing so led to him suffering for his actions.
2) Zuko suffered for his mistakes. He suffered when he turned away from Iroh, he suffered when he betrayed Iroh, and he suffered even after his face turn. There were consequences for his mistakes; he didn’t get off scot free because his childhood was hard. He was still held accountable by the narrative and made to take responsibility for the wrongs he did.
3) Zuko made tangible amends to the people he hurt. He rescued Hakoda, helped Katara get closure, and became Aang’s firebending master. He put in work to make up for the things he did and rebuild bridges with his new allies.
Most redemption narratives fail because the guilty party is guilty of much greater crimes than failing to capture the hero, never works to make amends, and never suffers for their mistakes. You wanted to see Zuko redeem himself because he had the capacity, wanted to do the work, and paid dearly for his mistakes.
you’re right and you should say it
It’s so normalized, they teach it to us from birth. Some people live their entire lives never seeing an issue with the images above.

:))))))
It’s actually a pretty good highlight of how generally people don’t notice they’re being racist, since the diversity in the various characters depicted leads me to believe they thought they were including everyone.

If you’re a wlw ask if Morticia would ever treat you this way.
If the answer is no, move on.

me: hi! so where are you guys from :D
normal people: I am from Russia/Brazil/Italy/Australia/etc :)
Americans, assuming studying the specific geography of their country was ever relevant to me: Oh I was born in iower but went to school in Oregano (My parents come from East Carolina though):~)
Someone finally said it it’s so annoying!
One day I was eating at a restaurant in Peru with the 3 guys who were volunteering with me and someone asked us where we came from. So I said France, the German guy said Germany, the Maltese guy had to say Italy because almost no-one in Peru knows where Malta is, and then the American guy said Portland, like he didn’t even specify the state he just thought everyone knew where Portland is 😤
i can’t tell whether this is better or worse than
european: where are you from
american: i’m italian
european: omg same! da dove vieni?
american: wait what lol i don’t speak mexican i only speak english
and
european: where are you from?
american: (monolingual english speaker, white, never left Marietta, GA in 23 years of life) well i’m 1/5th irish, 1/7th german, 32% greek, 4/9ths native american, 1/12th swedish, a little bit filipino, my mother was a hamster and my father smelt of elderberries, but i just call myself african :)
The American comments on this post are so irritating. I think that some of them don’t realise that the USA is just a country while Europe is a continent made up of different countries where you can find different religions, different autochthonous ethnicities, different languages etc; You can’t compare a single country’s diversity to the diversity of an entire continent.
“But Texas is so different from Oregon! People need to know which state I’m from because they’re all so different!” We don’t care. We are going to see you as an American, not as a Texan or a Californian or whatever, just like you’re going to see someone from Bavaria as a German, someone from Normandy as a Frenchman or someone from Piedmont as an Italian, not as a Bavarian, a Norman and a Piedmontese. European countries have regional differences too, even more than US states yet we don’t feel the need to specify that to foreigners when they ask us where we’re from unless they ask us to elaborate.
“But the US is so big! Some of our states are even bigger than your countries!”
Russia is the largest country in the world and undoubtedly more diverse than the US. If you were to ask a Russian where they’re from they would say that they’re from Russia, not Komi or Tuva unless they’re speaking to another Russian or someone they know to be familiar with Russian geography.
You’re not special nor does the world revolve around you, just accept that and move on.
