As I read Eye of the World for, technically, the 3rd time (the first barely counts. I was a child and being read to), I've begun to hold a deeper appreciation for RJ's writing ability. More than I already had.
There's something to be said for a writer that can write 14 books, have over a thousand named characters, potentially an equal amount of plot lines both big and small, and then... To write in such a manner that you get to notice quite a few easter eggs a first time reader wouldn't look twice at.
-The island mentioned in the prologue created next to Dragonmount (now that I think about it more, it's so fitting to have the two next to each other serving as a deeper meaning).
-Ba'alzamon mentioning his presence during Lews Therin going mad and creating Dragonmount. First clue he is not the Dark One; but in fact Ishamael. During my last read, I didn't realize this until the Stone of Tear.
-The visions Min first sees when they're in Baerlon. "An eye balanced on a scale" for Mat. Which doesn't happen until the last few books. Brilliant.
And so many more!! All the eggs!!

finally caught up and I love love LOVE the more prominent classism in the WOT show, especially how it's used to characterize Elaida.
Because Siuan's office and quarters aren't just simple and rustic because she just wants it that way. It's a power move.
The richest merchants and most powerful rulers in the land will answer her call, will come to her office, and their butt's that have sat on silk and drunk from golden and silver goblets and eaten decadent imported meats will sit for the first time in a fisher's chair and drink from a commoner's cup.
while they are squirming in a chair they think is shitty and having their royal pose fall apart, there in front of them is Siuan Sanche Sedai, the Amyrlin Seat, making Kings and Queens squirm and making the nations sance from the chair of a peasant.
And Elaida can't see that, she only sees it as Siuan "ruining" the office and Tower by not covering everything in jewels and gold by "pointlessly" decorating like Siuan wants.
Because that's what Elaida would do
on my minor Aes Sedai character bullshit again: I loved what they did with Adeleas in 3x05, she's pretty clearly being presented as a stroke survivor after what Nyomi did in 3x01 and it's so rare 1) to see characters with severe disability of this nature in fantasy and 2) to see it presented in a way that is intended to remind you that Adeleas may be struggling to communicate right now, but it's not because she's not capable.

Moiraine really went to Egwene and said "it's 1am, I'm drunk, and I NEED to call my ex."
And Egwene said "sure, use my phone."
I loved how Coine telling Nynaeve that there's not any one way to be a channeler cause like that's what the Tower wants to people to believe! And it really sets up more of all the different channeler societies that will be coming up in the future.
It also explains why Nynaeve has had such a hard time cause every Aes Sedai has been trying to get her to channel in a certain way without thinking about what's the best for Nynaeve

I need the show to succeed and get more seasons because I desperately want to see Mr. I Want To Die be force-reincarnated into an emo teenager's dream hot body, only to have absolutely no appreciation for it ("except maybe Lews Therin will notice me now??"). I would be hollering. The show-onlys will be screeching, I know it.
i was draining pasta yesterday and as i was pouring the water down the drain i was like “damn the aiel would hate pasta because it wastes so much water to cook” 😭
No no no, you see... The Aiel in Modern Earth would be your beloved friend that finds any and every way to reuse things. You can actually use pasta water for many things. Starching your clothes, like the collars of button up shirts. Using it as a base for your next stew. Using it in your sauces (actually a pretty common use).
I will now forever think of Modern Aiel in this way.
Eye of the World thoughts
In chapter 16, Nynaeve arrives in Baerlon and confronts the group. While they're in the room, Egwene is going to great lengths to hide her unbound hair. Earlier in the book, Rand chides her for unbraiding her hair after having waited so long to be able to braid it. She essentially tells Rand Aes Sedai don't braid their hair and so she won't. My previous times through this, I didn't think much of this. I also didn't realize during those reads that Egwene is a character of color. Capitalized by the portrayal of Egwene in the TV series, my thoughts started churning... (Yes, the TV show isn't cannon, I know).
Now, I am a white person, so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt. Perhaps I am seeing things which are not there. Perhaps I am not. I'm fully willing to admit maybe I am wrong and to learn from this.
Right. So. This whole situation speaks to me of something in our own world. Cultural erasure and assimilation. Many marginalized communities have been forced to assimilate to white societal standards in order to gain acceptance. One of the more prominent standards being hair. Here we have Egwene, initially proud to sport her newly braided hair. Something she avidly waited for. She enters into a different culture and chooses to let her hair loose in an effort to belong.
Then enters Nynaeve, and she goes to mentionable effort to hide her unbound hair. She knows Nynaeve would be appalled, and I think it's safe to say by extension that her community at home would also be upset. Braiding their hair is plainly a significant tradition, but Egwene wants to fit in with these new people. "She kept fiddling with her hair as if torn between continuing to hide the fact that it was no longer braided and pushing back the hood of her cloak."
I don’t understand at all why people think the Wheel of Time series is sexist. From the very beginning I could see that it’s a criticism of the whole “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” way of thinking. It’s always brought up in ways that are obviously stemming solely from a character’s upbringing and society, not at all of any natural law.
Character flaws are not writer flaws, guys.
“There is a technical term for someone who confuses the opinions of a character in a book with those of the author. That term is ‘idiot’.
– S.M. Stirling
There are also a number of instances in the series, where gender stereotypes are disproved or demonstrated to have exceptions in the same book where they are expressed, such as the relationship axioms and advice of Marin al'Vere in “The Shadow Rising”, and her daughter’s prejudice about male gossip in “The Path of Daggers.” Also, sometimes its pretty clear that the character expressing gender essentialist ideas doesn’t actually believe them, such as Thom’s infamous “Men forget but never forgive, and women forgive but never forget,” in “The Dragon Reborn.” It is absolutely certain that Thom has not forgotten the conflict between him and Morgase, but also that he has forgiven her part in it. A couple books later, when we get into her stream of conscious, Morgase doesn’t seem very much like she’s forgiven him at all.
Sometimes an old man just doesn’t want to bother with explaining all the complicated feelings and nuances of an old relationship to a 20 year old dumbass, so he gives him some wise-sounding mumbo jumbo to shut him up.
Makes me think of how Matt was basically sexually assaulted in Ebou Dar.
Though I will never forgive him for feminizing Min. Can't a tomyboy just stay a tomboy?
I’m losing my fucking mind upon realizing just how much of Wheel of Time is off brand King Arthur stuff. They even have a King Arthur character (Artur Hawkwing). The closer you look the more you see. I’m losing my fucking MIND
Michael Livingston wrote a book that actually talks a lot about all of the various mythologies and cultures he took inspiration from. It is way more than just King Arthur. This is one of the many things I love about this series.
