Yikes.
It’s been a very long time since I’ve posted. Probably several, several months if not a year. Let me try to scoot back in to this real quick and act like nothing happened. I’m not going to make any promises though. Although I will say having a reliable internet connection definitely helps. Tumblr was basically a no-go while I was in Tanzania. Anyway - I’m baaaaack! Let’s see what I can make out of it this time.

I’m mildly obsessed with Evelyn from the Internets and I really appreciate her making this video. Not that I would know from personal experience, but I imagine that for really popular bloggers and YouTube personalities it must be very hard to even reference their social/political views on their platforms for fear of alienating a portion of their fan base. I think it takes an incredible amount of bravery to make a statement regardless of one’s popularity and I think she did an incredible job of maintaining her usual humor and sass while getting her point across in a way that many people, including myself, can relate to.
I don’t really want to count how many unarmed people were killed while I was in Tanzania, but enough for me remember bursting into tears at the office on several occasions. It actually got to the point where I had to deactivate my Facebook because it was becoming to overwhelming to read about a new killing every week or so. It consumes your mind, not to mention the subsequent spewing of bigotry and just general disrespect towards the victim and their family. It makes your heart ache and it truly becomes hard to focus on much else. It may sound dramatic, but I’m sure there are those out there who feel the same way. Much like Evelyn, I’ve often felt like I needed a moment....just a moment to absorb what is happening in our world and in country, but the world keeps spinning. Anyway, its a great video so give it a watch and a thumbs up.

While Boyfriend and I were in Zanzibar we went to a market and found a vendor selling whole vanilla pods (is that what they're called?) I really wanted to buy some but had NO idea what to do with them. I don't have much time for baking and basically none of the equipment I usually use to bake while I'm at home. Making my own vanilla extrat would be a great thing to do if I do decide to buy a pack while I'm out here. Possibly even give them as gifts? *Visions of cute tags and adorable glass bottles*
For a generation, many North American parents have indulged children’s picky eating tendencies by sticking them in an endlessly repeating loop of chicken fingers, burgers, pizza, plain pasta, mac and cheese, and grilled cheese sandwiches. Anyone who has sat down for a meal with youngsters over the past 25 years will recognize this list of typical “kids’ foods.” Pushed out of the picture, to varying degrees for different children, are fruits and vegetables and anything else that might challenge them, from spicy delicacies to unfamiliar proteins. To picture what this might look like to a visitor from almost anywhere else in the world, imagine we just mashed up some bread and cheese and mechanically separated chicken flesh together, called it Kiddy Chow, and bought it by the bag to rip open to feed the tots. ...By now, the effects of the modern kids’ diet are relentlessly well-documented. Diverse eating habits tend to lead to healthier children, and those who don’t eat their fruit and veg are more likely to be overweight or obese. Just two out of five children were getting their five servings of fruit and vegetables a day as of 2004, and this year Statistics Canada will conduct another survey to find out if the problem has worsened. Children and adolescents are twice as likely to be overweight or obese as there were a generation ago. Twenty per cent of Canadian children and youth were overweight as of 2011 and a further 12% of them were obese. In 1979 (incidentally, the first year a McDonald’s Happy Meal was served), around 14% of children and youth were overweight, and childhood obesity practically didn’t exist in Canada — figures for children under 12 were so low that government reports treated the problem as a statistical zero.

It would be weird to say that this is a relief...because it isn't, but sometimes it is nice to be reminded that statistically you have more control over what might kill you than you think.

In Korea, people can tune in on their laptops and cell phones any time, any day and watch people eat—and talk about eating. These “online eaters” are neither chefs nor restaurateurs, but the stars of the South Korean digital food phenomenon: Mukbang.
While on the topic of Mukbang....check out this video. I can't absolutely say I get it now, but this video did bring another dimension to the trend for me...at least more than what I knew based on the article and the podcast I listened to. Maybe because of the culutre that I grew up in I'm too conditioned to see or assume sexual undertones in most forms of media, but a lot like Charlet I just find myself strongly believing that there is some form of fetishism going on. Maybe that's why one of the BJ's says that foreigners just don't get it. Regardles....this is fascinating.
In some low-wage countries, U.S. retailers rely on independent auditors to verify that suppliers in apparel, footwear and other industries comply with social responsibility guidelines. For the most part, that has not happened with Mexican farm labor. American companies have not made oversight a priority because they haven't been pressured to do so. There is little public awareness of harsh conditions at labor camps. Many farms are in areas torn by drug violence, which has discouraged media coverage and visits by human rights groups and academic researchers. ...At Agricola El Porvenir, also near Culiacan, workers were required to disinfect their hands before picking cucumbers. Yet they were given just two pieces of toilet paper to use at the outhouses. At Campo San Jose, where many of them lived, workers said rats and feral cats had the run of the cramped living quarters and feasted on their leftovers. Laborers and their families bathed in an irrigation canal because the water had run out in the showers. In March, a snake was sighted in the canal, sparking a panic. Carmen Garcia stepped out of the fetid waterway after washing her 1-year-old grandson. His skin was covered with boils that she blamed on insect bites."He itches constantly," Garcia said. "I want to get a blood test, but I can't get to a doctor."
Slowly making my way through this article. There are four parts and I just finished Part I. The photography and video are striking, the stories are heartbreaking and I really hope everyone can find some time to give this a read. I can't quite remember if I watched or read this, but someone interviewed during the part I just finished brings up the point that there are no machines to harvest most produce and that the majority of fruits and vegetables that we eat have passed through the hands of a day laborer. That really resonated with me and made me think about how the countless many who have picked the food I eat on a daily basis have been treated. It's really eye-opening.
