Ok I don’t mean to be doing this too often but I literally just wrote a paper about this so I thought I would comment! The English translation is The Cursed Woman but the original French is La Femme Damnée. “Femmes Damnées” was the title of a Baudelaire poem from his acclaimed 1857 book Fleurs du mal, which was known, among other things, to be a collection that famously dealt with the subject of lesbians. The poem tells the story of the desires and passionate love between two lesbians: Delphine and Hippolyte. As a result of this poem and of the book as a whole, the terms “fleurs du mal” and “femme damnée” became lesbian monikers of the turn of the century. Though some have deemed the term “damned women” to be accusatory of some moral dissonance, the poem it is derived from is actually quite sympathetic to the condition of lesbian love as it is a love which is unable to fully flourish in that time. Regardless, the translated title of Tassaert’s painting is misleading, as the original French is less accusatory and more identifying. The title is more accurately “the lesbian.”

The Five Stages of the Writer's Rationality Breakdown Upon Posting/Updating a Fic

The chapter is done, the writer loves it, they reread it in full for the tenth time, it's the best thing they've written yet, they are ready to post it.

They post it. It has been ten seconds since the story/chapter is out. They start refreshing the ao3 statistics page every five seconds. The hits haven't grown, new kudos haven't shown up, there are no comments yet. It has been 25 seconds. The writer knows that if people have clicked to read the story the hits count won't update that information at least a few more minutes, that if someone HAS started to read they won't finish it for at least ten more minutes if the chapter isn't very long. The writer continues refreshing the page.

There are three or four new kudos. The hits show them that the page has been viewed at least five times as many times. There aren't any comments yet. They go to the fic and start rereading it for the eleventh time. They find a spelling mistake, a spot where they missed a change in tenses, and realize that there's a better word they could have used in that one sentence. They fix it with a speed that might make you think they've trying to hide an embarrassing secret.

The kudos count has grown a little more. They feel each kudos like a kiss to their cheek. There are still no comments but they try to be rational about it. It's only been like half an hour. They go off to reread the fic for the twelfth time. It's the worst thing they've ever read, no wonder no one is leaving a comment. The writer knows that it's only that the words in the fic are starting to blur together into a senseless paste. It is the WORST thing they've ever written.

There has been a comment. The reader loved it. The writer is going to smile for a week. They continue refreshing the statistics page, they smile wider and float higher with every new kudos and comment. It's been two hours.
