legit the best advice i can give you: feed your friends

any time someone is in any kind of crisis or upheaval, offer to feed them. tell them they don't have to choose what it is if they can't make decisions, just ask about allergies and preferences and tell them you're just gonna make food happen at their house.

friend having a baby? delivery gift certificate to order food to the hospital after the kid shows up.

someone's relative passes away? offer to make them dinner.

buddy gets laid off? ask if you can order them lunch.

pal stuck in a depressive episode? offer to drive them to fucking mcdonalds, if that's what they want.

people in crisis are tired and sad and angry and the last thing most of them are doing is thinking about feeding themselves. so if you have the ability or time or money, providing that is always, always a good move.

legit i do this all the time, and it is 100% always appreciated. i have taught all my friends that when something happens, we feed each other. it makes people feel extremely cared for, and I cannot recommend it enough.

The tiniest ilya

It hits Shane one evening, when they’re relaxing together on the couch in the house they own together, that he’s achieved something he didn’t even consciously realise he had set as a goal.

He’s created a place where Ilya feels safe.

To some extent, Shane knew they sort of always had something like that - in 1410, in 1221, in countless hotel rooms that then became the homes they had separately, in Boston and Montreal - but this, obviously, is different. It’s different in the best way.

He looks down at Ilya, fast asleep with his head in Shane’s lap, covered in a blanket. His eyelashes are so long. There’s no furrow in his brow, and his mouth is just slightly open. He makes the kind of snuffling, clicky noises that he only makes when he’s sleeping really comfortably and really well.

This is a house they share. Ilya’s stuff is safe here. Their dog is safe here. Ilya can fall asleep on Shane’s lap on the couch with the knowledge that he’s safe and loved and cared for in every single moment. He doesn’t have to tiptoe around or worry about someone’s mood or censor himself in the way that Shane imagines he had to do when he was a child, after Irina passed and the house lost all its warmth. Here, Ilya and everything he is is treasured. He’s safe.

Shane smiles and wraps a finger around a loose curl, scritches at his scalp gently enough that it doesn’t wake him. Ilya purrs a little in his sleep. They’re all good here.

You wanna ragebait other players? He has the perception of a God and can tell from one look when a players second wife will leave him. He can also tell when you're feeling like shit mentally and he will pick you up take you to Harris farm and make you dog walk with him while throwing sweets at you. Holmberg got high sticked the other week Ilya spent like, 2 hours going through the guys Instagram with us while wine drunk and ripping his entire life to pieces with us.

and Shane? He will come early to practice for you, he will tell me things wrong with my playing I didn't know EXISTED. Boyle was in a slump Hollander turned up at our house with a fucking smoothie get your ass out of bed we're going to the rink and he will completely pull apart your playing style with such precision that's it's beautiful to watch and I'm not even mad about it. Roz will be giving a fucking captains speech about how we can do better next week and he'll fucking pipe up in the corner going, well we will if Lapointe improves his footwork Coach, we're gonna be staying late on Saturday and Wiebe is like, sounds good Hollander like COACH you can't Agree For Me and he'll just go, Shane Hollander is giving you a private lesson I don't care what you're doing cancel it
