A PULSE. A BEAT. A SONG. LISTEN TO THE UNIVERSE SING.
Transgender women
I can’t stop thinking about how perfectly Barbie portrays girlhood and growing up… How you’re born in a perfect pink world, where you make the rules and get to prioritise whimsies and friendship and beauty, and then you notice something has changed, you discover that something is wrong with you, and you’re offered an illusion of choice, but even if you’d rather keep wearing your heels and go home and be safe and comfortable, you have to choose the Birkenstock, you have to leave your home, you have to grow up. So you’re thrust into this gritty, unfeeling world, where you’re scrutinised and suppressed, where you want to disappear into yourself, because everything is harsh and big and you are tiny and fragile and inadequate. And as overwhelming and impossible as it seems, you survive it. You find truth in the things you believed in when you were young, the inherent good in humanity, connection and love; your friends who look at you while you are crying, and tell you that they cannot imagine what it is that you do not like about yourself.
thanks guys
how can you be so controversial and yet so brave
(reposted from Twitter)
Hey so, have I ever told you about the time I was at an interfaith event (my rabbi, who was on the panel, didn't want to be the only Jew there), and there was a panel with representatives of 7 different traditions, from Baha'i to Zoroastrian?
The setup was each panelist got asked the same question by the moderator, had 3 minutes to respond, and then they moved on to the next panelist.
The Christian dude talked for 8 minutes and kept waving off the poor, flustered, terminally polite Unitarian moderator.
The next panelist was a Hindu lady, who just said drily, "I'll try to keep my answer to under a minute so everyone else still has a chance to answer." (I, incidentally, am at a table with I think the only other non-Christian audience members, a handful of Muslims and a Zorastrian.)
So then we get to the audience questions part. No one's asking any questions, so finally I decide to get things rolling, and raise my hand and the very polite moderator comes over and gives me the mic.
I briefly explain Stendahl's concept of "holy envy" and ask what each of theirs is.
(If you're not familiar, Stendahl had 3 tenets for learning about other traditions, and one was leave room for "holy envy," being able to say, I am happy in my tradition and don't desire to convert, but this is something about another tradition that I admire and wish we had.)
The answers were lovely. My rabbi said she admired the Buddhist comfort with silence and wished we could learn to have that spaciousness in our practice. The Hindu said she admired the Jewish and Muslim commitment to social justice & changing, rather than accepting, the status quo.
The Christian dude said he envied that everyone else on the panel had the opportunity to newly accept Jesus.
I shit you not.
Dead silence. The Buddhist and Baha'i panelists are resolutely holding poker faces. The Hindu lady has placed her hands on the table and folded them and seems to be holding them very tightly. Over on the middle eastern end of the table, the rabbi, the imam, and the Zoroastrian lady are all leaning away from the Christian at identical angles with identical expressions of disgust. The terminally polite Unitarian moderator is literally wringing his hands in distress.
A Christian lady at the table next to me, somehow unable to pick up on the emotional currents in the room, sighs happily and says to her fellow church lady, "What a beautiful answer."
anyway I love my rabbi to death and would do anything for her
except attend another interfaith event
What.
@taketwoinink
“Let’s keep the wonderful diversity we have in this world by having everyone accept Jesus as one of their own.”
Fuck you.
I have no need for Jesus.
My life is perfectly complete without worshipping your weird Greek god-man.
My culture predates Jesus and is perfectly complete and good without his Johnny-come-lately ass.
Fuck you and your desire to make everyone like you but with a thin “diversity” coat of paint.
I'm sorry that what I said came across as wrong or as insensitive or selfish because that's not what I intended. I didn't think very hard about how I phrased what I was saying, and now I see maybe that was a mistake
I'm not saying you need my Jesus. You absolutely do not. What I meant was more a poorly worded way of me trying to relate to people who have different faiths than me. I don't understand other people's gods, but I know mine, so what I really meant was let's find the similarities between us and use that to bridge the differences. I don't know much about other religions and I haven't been given many opportunities to learn.
I think that there is a place for religion in life and not everyone wants or needs it. But I feel loved by my god and I want everyone to have a chance to feel loved like that. And that's really what I was trying to say
I think there's a lot of beauty in other faiths though and I want to have a chance to experience some of that and see what it really is that they believe
So I'm sorry that I offended you. It really wasn't my intention. If you'd like, I'll go and delete my reblog and all of the tags and we can pretend this didn't happen
But I feel loved by my god and I want everyone to have a chance to feel loved like that. And that's really what I was trying to say
You are still engaging in the very Christian practice of talking about people who aren’t like you as if we need to be fixed. As if we’re missing something.
Just because you like a particular thing does not mean that everyone else should have it or like it or need it.
I’m glad you have a relationship with your god that you experience as loving.
You can actually just… stop there in your interaction with people from different cultures.
Just, you know, encounter them as they are.
Ok, for Christians who just don’t get it, try this metaphor on for size. Imagine that you approach me, another grown adult, and you say:
“I love my mom! She’s the best mom in the world!”
“Oh, um, that’s really nice!” I say. “It’s great that you have such a close relationship with her - I love that for you.”
You nod, excitedly, and then continue, “You should be adopted by her.”
“Uh... what?” I reply.
“Well, she’s an amazing mom,” you explain. “I have a really great relationship with her. And she’d be happy to adopt you - I’ve already checked with her. She’s happy to legally adopt anyone!”
“Well that’s very... nice,” I hazard, “But uh, I actually have my own parents, thanks.”
“Oh,” you say, “But surely your parents aren’t as nice as my mom is. My mom would be a much better parent if you just gave her a chance and signed the adoption paperwork.”
“Well,” I say slowly, “Look: I’m not doubting your mom’s niceness or anything, but I actually have a preexisting relationship with my parents and have no desire to sever my ties with them in order to be adopted by your mom. She didn’t raise me, I’ve never actually had a positive interaction with her, and if I’m being honest, it’s a little weird that you’re pushing this on me given that I’m an adult and fully capable of getting by on my own - parents or not. Even if I didn’t have parents of my own - which to be clear, I do - that still wouldn’t mean I’d necessarily want to be adopted. And that’s true even if your mom is the nicest mom in the world. Most adults who are not currently the children of your mom don’t necessarily want to become children of your mom. Does that make sense?”
“But–!” you say “But I feel loved by my mom and I want everyone to have a chance to feel loved like that. That’s all I’m trying to say here.”
“I also feel loved by my parents?” I say, “And it’s pretty offensive that you assumed - without ever having met my parents - that they weren’t capable of loving me the way your mom loves you?”
“I’m sorry, but I don’t know much about other people’s parents and I haven’t been given many opportunities to learn.”
“Er... with all due respect, that’s not really my problem? You don’t have to have a personal relationship with my parents in order to not come up to me and loudly assume that they didn’t love me and that I’d want to be adopted by your mom instead. Can’t you see how that’s a totally inappropriate thing to say to a stranger you know nothing about?”
“Well I’m sorry that I offended you. It really wasn’t my intention. If you want to have a relationship with my mom that’s not a formal adoption, that’s fine too – diversity is important and everyone can love my mom in their own way if that’s better for them."
“I gotta say, after having this interaction, I’d honestly prefer to never meet your mom at all.”
“Well, I think that there is a place for family in life, even if not everyone wants or needs it. And I think everyone who does value family should have an opportunity to get to know my mom, so that they can know what real family is like.”
“Uh, yeah,” I say, backing slowly away, “I’m going to go now...”
“I’m sure my mom will find you one day!” you call after me, as I book it out of there as fast as humanly possible, “You might not even know she’s my mom - you might mistake her for one of your own parents - and that’s fine for you! In fact, you think you love your parents, but maybe your mom is secretly my mom right now! Whatever diverse relationship you choose to have with my mom is fine, just so long as it’s my mom you love, because my mom is the only mom that matters!”

anyway just a reminder for the myth lovers out there
king arthur was welsh. merlin was welsh. camelot was in wales. the lady and the lake she pops out of; welsh. excalibur; magic inanimate welsh object. etc.
on the way to see family, i drive past a lake that in which is welsh legend, is the last resting place of excalibur.
i’m just saying in my experience a lot of these legends had been so anglo-fied in the past and it’s like, all this cool shit is celtic welsh legend.
Arthur’s wife was called Gwenhwyfar first.
Like the kraken I emerge, summoned by the English theft of Arthur
Arthur is a Welsh name. It means ‘bear’. He’s likely derived from a Gaulish bear god
In the form of King Arthur, he is an anti-Saxon mythological WELSH figure, representing the native Brythonic people of Britain against the Anglo-Saxon invaders, dating from the 500s AD
The version appropriated by the English in the 1100s is the shitty boring sanitised version - they did it because they were trying to compete with the romance tradition on the continent at the time but didn’t have anything of their own to romanticise
Merlin is called Myrddin
Percival is Peredur
Kay is Cei, and also was subject to enormous character assassination in the English version - in the Welsh version he’s much closer to Arthur’s right hand man
Guinevere is Gwenhwyfar
There is no Lancelot, no Galahad, no tedious affair story
There is no Camelot. Arthur’s seat was Caerllion - modern Caerleon, putting him into both the region of the Silures (one of the most fearsome and warlike of the British tribes, modern South East Wales) and the old Roman fortress, which would have been an impossibly huge Palace for a warlord at the time.
They all have super powers and get up to wacky hijinks involving hair care, giants, strange giant wildlife, spectral revolving/glass fortresses in the Celtic sea, and a really fucking weird chess match. Also a cloak made out of beards.
What the fuck is the round table
Anyway it’s particularly irritating because traditional Welsh culture and beliefs have been so thoroughly stripped away and destroyed by England over the centuries, and Arthurian legend is one of the few surviving fragments we have left to preserve. And he’s specifically an anti-English figure. So the ubiquity of the boring and appropriative English Arthur across the whole fucking world is… Well, it’s not great.
This is so interesting! Does anyone know a good source/reading material where one could get more of the original Welsh versions of the stories?
The Mabinogion, translated by Sioned Davies is your best bet! It’s got a bunch of big-ass Welsh myths in, but most relevantly it includes Culhwch ac Olwen, which is a full-on Arthurian text (plus a couple of interesting ones).
There’s a whole bunch more that’s survived in fragments, but they’re all in Old Welsh - fully readable if you speak Welsh, but obviously not much use if you don’t (I don’t know if you do or not but from context I’m guessing not lol).
Trioedd Ynys Prydain (literally “the Triads of the Island of Britain”, though in English they’re usually called “the Welsh Triads”) are a huge collection of lists of three things from Welsh lore, including a lot of Arthurian lore. They’re not stories, but they contain fascinating allusions to stories, to whole strains of the Arthurian tradition, that we may or may not have elsewhere.
Absolutely fantastic addition, yes, Rachel Bronwich’s Triads are glorious.
The "Might as Well" principle for people with ADHD means leaning into your urge to take care of needs immediately when you notice them, and take that task-hopping tendency as an opportunity to "clean as you go".
You were probably raised to think there's only 1 "right" way to be productive. This is false. You don't need to (and honestly you CAN'T) become neurotypical, but you've probably spent a lot of your life striving to achieve success in a neurotypical way. This can be detrimental to your mental health. You have to learn what works best for YOU.
You don't need to feel guilty for not keeping a strict routine and an aesthetically pleasing home. Your goal should be keeping your environment (minimally) livable and safe.
This principle is intended to help with chore struggles, but it can also apply to personal care, and other areas of the ADHD struggle.
Going to the kitchen? Might as well bring as many dishes/cups as you can carry.
Going to the bathroom? Might as well wipe down the counter while you're in there (or for me personally, scoop the litter box while I'm there).
Taking a shower? Might as well scrub the shower walls while you're there (Be safe! I keep a utility sponge nearby for spot cleaning, but I don't use chemicals during my showers).
Forgot to brush your teeth in the morning? Might as well brush after lunch. No need to wait until the next "designated" teeth brushing time at bedtime (minimally, keep some floss picks, tooth wipes, or mouth wash at work/school).
Stuck in decision paralysis in front of the fridge? Might as well hydrate. Drink water!
Mount doom (laundry pile) giving you anxiety? Might as well pick one category, such as shirts, and sort them out. You don't even have to put them all the way away, just separate them so your doom pile looks smaller and less daunting.
Please feel free to add more!!
Waiting for the microwave to beep, or the pasta water to boil? Might as well see if you can get a few dishes done. You can’t empty a full sink in two minutes, but you can set the dirty stuff soaking, or wipe and rise some of the stuff that was already soaking.
Sometimes this leads me to actually finish cleaning the kitchen, sometimes it doesn’t, either way I have a few less dirty dishes in my life.
in this new year I want you to be alright. I hope you move out. I hope you have enough money to feel safe. I hope you abandon shame and forgive yourself. I hope you get enough sleep and some good news. I hope you laugh a lot and the heaviness of the world eases a bit. I wish you to be alright.
everyone say thank you greta
Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.
Might I add:
The defeat of the wizard who made people choose how they’d be to be executed
The woman who raised the changeling alongside her biological child
The human who died of radiation poisoning after repairing the spaceship
The adventures of a space roomba
Cinderella finding Araura (and falling in love)

we need personally tailored hormone cocktails. if u want estrogen curves a non functional dick and a flat chest u should be able to get that. if u want huge tits hard cock huge loads we should promote that. when i’m president we’ll kill all real estate agents in the street like dogs.
Crowley appreciates being called elegant but has suggested that "saunters" would be a more accurate verb.
Reblog if you are a “female pleasurist”
fyi the point of fucking up your data patterns isnt to avoid suspicion. it’s to make EVERYONE suspicious. same logic as the bloc, pals. protect your comrades, be suspicious. ESPECIALLY if you aren’t doing anything likely to get you arrested.
the state is less omniscient and significantly more incompetent than you’d think. overextend their resources at every possible opportunity. make them cry wolf repeatedly. run their data analysis agents fucking ragged. and strike. attack.
YES i’m a postgrad statistics researcher and i can tell you that the state honestly has NO IDEA what to do with the data it collects, it has an obsession with big data but it’s almost impossible to work with in practice. the traditional statistical approaches that are used can’t be scaled up, the adapted approaches are substantially weakened, and the machine learning approaches have the same problems and often tell them nothing. data scientists are only just coming around to these issues too, most still just push on with it anyway - incompetence is the word. above all this though, like you say, the biggest issue for the state is at the point of data collection. they will NEVER get anything useful if they’re collecting shitty messy data. they will eventually figure out that the real solution is working how to collect accurate and meaningful data, we should make it as difficult as possible for them to do that
This makes me think that we need WAAAY more apps that generate junk data
Apps that generate junk data? tell me moooore.
Ooh I know this one!
Ad Nauseum is an adblocker that stores the ads it blocks and continuously generates fake clicks, fucking with analytics and costing the ad companies money
TrackMeNot automatically does randomly generated searches on a variety of search engines to obscure your real searches and fuck with analytics, and you can set it up to work with anything that has a search bar (including facebook, twitter, amazon, youtube, etc)
WhatCampaign replaces analytics parameters in links with the string “FuckOff”. I thought there was a similar extension that used random strings, but I can’t seem to find it
Privacy Possum is a fork of Privacy Badger with a focus on costing tracking companies as much money as possible, and idk if my limited tech knowledge is enough to understand what it does but the description does say it falsifies some data so that’s good enough for me
@afraidofamericans
Boy it SURE would be a SHAME if this were SPREAD AROUND for everyone TO SEE
