top ten worst moments is whenever someone (me/a post/a friend/a stranger online) is gushing abt jason and another person says "didnt he die though?" as if that takes away from his talents. like yeah he died, so did my dog and he was still a pro at tug-of-war, the fuck? him dying was in no way shape or form a skill issue, it was literally entirely circumstantial. there wasnt anything jason couldve "done better" it was shit luck and a nonexistent support system and a lying trusted adult and a psychopath what was he supposed to do? dodge?
opinión on the under the red hood movie compared to the comic
Obviously it doesn't capture the nuance that the comic did, but it also made explicit changes that ultimately subtracted from the whole thing. I would NOT recommend using the movie as your base for Jason, and I desperately need people who have only watched the movie to stop engaging with my posts about the comics. Excluding Sheila, replacing Talia with Ra's, putting a focus on pit madness (unforgivable sin), and of course the neutered ending all make me reslly dislike it. I understand that the animated universe plays by different rules and can't have Bruce blatantly fuck up like he did in the comic, but I also don't care and thought the ending was stupid. It made Jason look incompetent and completely missed the point of the comic ending: The story is a tragedy, there is no third option, someone was always going to die in that building, inaction as a choice and a for of violence, ect.
I am a sucker for Jensen Ackles voice acting him though. I like that they kept most of Jason's monolog in there too! And despite missing Talia I do appreciate Ra's being showcased more empathetically, I do think that's an improvement from the comics. That's all I got for positives really. I don't like it and far too many people take it as gospel because its watered down enough that you don't have to actually put any brain power into analyzing it. They basically strip Jason of his bite and in changing the ending they lost the impact and poetic irony that the comic had. The pit madness of it all basically negates any of the original conflict or moral dilemma and softens the monolog as a result. Also there's an unhinged subsection of fans who swear on their lives the movie is the new main canon?? That's not true. That's factually incorrect. Animated projects are a part of the animated universe and are not canon to the comics. I don't know where this idea comes from.
fuck zero hour. all my homies hate zero hour. dick is robin for 3 years and jason for only one according to zero hour. does that make any sense. together we can ignore the zero hour retcon and have jason and tim the same age so that it actually fits the timeline established in post crisis in the 80s
People are so delusional when it comes to Batman’s participation and influence in literal children involving themselves in his life. They act like he was BEGGING for them not to put on the suit and to not go out. How far separated from reality and the source material do you have to be in order to defend him like this?
Someone in a comment really said “Jason literally ran away and ended up being killed” — yeah after years of Bruce already conditioning his mind and body to accept the circumstances of being a vigilante at the ripe age of thirteen! Bruce Batman hadn’t even known Jason Todd, a vulnerable, homeless, young boy for forty-eight hours before he was offering him the role of Robin, which we find out after his death Bruce didn’t do so for Jason’s own good, but because he missed Dick!
And not just Jason, but they bring up Tim as well “well Tim figured out who Batman before he became Robin and forced himself into it!” Tim went to DICK FIRST. Yes Tim was initially influenced by Alfred to put the suit on and go save Bruce and Dick in ALPOD and Bruce wasn’t very receptive to it, but it should’ve ended at that. Bruce should’ve continued thinking about the little boy who was murdered because of his own poor choices in getting him involved in vigilantism, as he thinks about at the end of ADITF, but he just gives in? to Tim?
I won’t speak on Stephanie Brown and Damian Wayne because Steph was a vigilante before meeting Bruce and Damian is truly a special case — I still have the opinion they were children and should’ve never encountered the challenges they did in their positions which ultimately lead to their deaths, but this is a post about Bruce BEGGING and PLEADING with ALL of his kids not to be Robin when that is entirely FALSE.
Anyway, some people need to Get a Grip and face that after the death of Jason Todd, Robin is no longer a position of Whimsy, but one of child endangerment which Bruce Wayne actively participates in.
I do find it funny how Jason fans are expected to hate on him, compared to like...most other fans of characters. And I'm not saying this is Jason-specific by any means, it's just something I've noticed.
We can't say we like Jason without condemning his actions. We can't say we like Jason without saying that he was one of the worst Robins and Tim was wayyyy better. We can't say we like Jason without thinking he should be punished for his crimes.
And like...buddy, I like Jason because he's committed crimes. Tf do you mean I have to sit there and laugh and be like 'oh yeah I like Jason but (character) is so much better at the job and (character) should be allowed to hit him and Jaybin sucked actually and Jason is a monster for doing this stuff to (character) and yeah I agree he's a fraud'???
Like jfc god forbid I like a guy for being a bit of an asshole. God forbid I like a character who does dodgy stuff and admits his grey morality. God forbid I like a guy without sanitising what he did or putting up a disclaimer that I think what he did was bad. God forbid I have fun with my own fucking opinions. Why do I have to comfort others for liking a character who isn't their favourite, who is someone they dislike or hate, who they for some reason have labelled a fraud? Why do I have to laugh and say he has no good comics just to follow the popular opinion???
Again, none of this is Jason specific. He just seems to get it the most out of all of the Robins; especially Jaybin, because apparently me thinking Jaybin is a great Robin means I'm a larper or a fraud or delusional or whatever. Sorry I like a silly whimsical kid whose slow descent into a terrible outcome makes me emotional ig
Anyway. I will never apologise for liking Jason or his comics. Ever.
so many fanfics- even and especially jason centric ones- revolve around this victim blaming idea that jason is just stupid and needs to see the truth aka bruce is god always right and he is always wrong and he shouldnt trust his own thoughts and intuition
there'll be a fic where jason thought bruce was a pedophile all through his days in the manor and the finale is 'jason just needed to accept that he was stupid to think that and say sorry to bruce' instead of 'an adult couldnt convince a child in his care that he wasnt going to rape him after three whole years and needs to change something in his behavior'
fic says jason comes back to gotham after bruce beat him into a coma and told him never to return and fears retaliation and the thesis is 'jason is stupid for thinking his ~family~ would ever hurt him brucie is so sorry he somehow made jason think hes not welcome here' instead of 'beating anyone near death is a severe crime and the psychological pain of that doesnt just go away when the abuser aggressor says oopsie'
fic has an injured jason not feeling safe in an unsecured home and every one of the batfamily makes him open the doors and windows and walk on a broken leg and prove they can break in without him knowing and this is heartwarming? them ignoring his emotional well being to show they care? making someone scared and hurt is good family behavior and jason is just too stupid to understand that
how does that make sense? why do we do this? what do i have to block out of my ao3 searches to not see it anymore? fics will have straight up cult like emotional manipulation played as heartwarming... this shit is so triggering to me as an abuse survivor
tag your fics victim blaming, horror, mind break, emotional manipulation, anything please i beg
One trope that i find weird is that during batfam reconciliation fics, the batfam members use alfred as like the big red button to bring jason back, but i feel like that wouldn't actually work. at all.
Jason would HATE alfred after everything he did after he died. Canonically, it was alfred that made the "a good soldier" memorial case, bruce wanted it down but alfred insisted he keep it up, he was the one that gave tim the Robin suit THAT JASON DIED IN, and drove him to save batman and nightwing with NO training at all. He also helped keep up all the "jason was always doomed for a life of crime, and he was an angry child that got himself killed" narrative that was spun after DitF. Alfred pennyworth is batman's biggest enabler, and has stood by while bruce did all his bullshit, such as the whole UtRH arc, and RHatO #25, where he said that it was inevitable that jason would go back on the whole no killing agreement.
Alfred may care for all of Bruce's children, but his only grandchild is damian, as shown when he made him robin behind tim's back( the whole "dick made damian robin" thing is just to add to tim angst. Dick was infact against that whole shitshow). If it doesn't benefit bruce, his pseudo son/employer and landlord, he wouldn't give a fuck.
It's basically impossible to write a reconciliation fic at all without completely rewriting characters, especially jason and alfred. Jason believes that batman's mission is flawed and useless since he doesn't permanently stop crime, so he'd never fully give up killing, the whole reason there's a rift between him and bruce, and alfred isn't this doting grandfather that always sides with his grandchildren and bakes cookies and makes tea.
Also, one major thing the fandom forgets is that alfred is canonically a shitty father to julia, his bio daughter. He abandoned his own daughter for the waynes, he'd never prioritise bruce's children over him.
It’s probably just a coincidence but one thing I enjoy/find fascinating about post ressurection pre-flashpoint Jason is his complete and utter lack of healthy relationships with men. The only people he gets along with are like 3 women, Donna, who tolerates him, Talia, and Scarlet
misandrist Jason is a headcanon near and dear to my heart actually…
Jason: I’m not killing people Bruce I’m killing men
Genuinely absbsjsgdbsns
Thinking about how 408 says Batman only visits crime alley once a year and 416 where Bruce narrates how “Jason was desperate to get out on his own” and like,,
Do you think that a few years, it was just Robin covering crime alley. (I think people of crime alley would remember that.)
jason deserves to find happiness in a way that gets everyone pissed off at him. it's his god given right. he deserves to relish in it
artemis calling jason little one is just amazonian for babygirl
"I'm trying to go on a vengeance quest but unfortunately my good hearted nature and desire to help people keeps getting in the way and sending me off on Heroic Sidequests."
Jason during the end of Lost Days: I don't give a crap about the world. This was always about working through my feelings about Bruce.
Jason throughout every other section of Lost Days: I can't let them get away with this, I can't stand seeing innocent people hurt. I have an incessant need to see Justice Done. Talia looks at me and I can tell when she hears me say stuff like that that I remind her of Bruce but I'm not like Bruce and anyway what am I supposed to do? Let people keep doing evil stuff to others when I could use my abilities to stop them and help people? No, I can't do it. A part of why I'm so hurt by Bruce not just killing my murderer is because he's literally still running around and killing other people's sons and daughters.
going down a non bat superhero tag be like: Batman post, Batman post, Batman post that explicitly belittles the tagged superhero, more disrespect, post that doesn’t even mention the tag but says justice league in it, GOOD POST, good analysis but somehow still about Batman, ship art with Batman, post that has nothing to do with the tag or the fandom, the most incorrect take you’ve ever heard, more disrespect, take based on a spin-off animated show that hated he character, GOOD ART, just a genuinely confusing take, Batman post, Batman post, Batman post.
man, batman #409 is such a trip. ma gun trains an entire school of boys for a museum heist, boys who are all arguably around the same age and same social demographic/circumstances as jason, and jason repeatedly emphasizes how bad the cops and social services are for kids, only for bruce to adopt.....just him.....because he acted like a vigilante and stopped the heist (ideal robin candidate). there isn't even a mention of "bruce wayne" doing something for those other kids, but batman picks jason to ride off into the sunset with him, because jason acted in a way that set him apart from those other boys. even though jason is just like the other boys (poor), he acted like a vigilante would, which allows bruce to instantly project onto him and bring him into the vigilante life. bruce had already started projecting onto jason after learning about catherine and willis, but somehow, the ma gunn heist ends up being an audition for the role, an audition jason didn't know he was even giving. there's this intriguing review by @/cybernex on leagueofcomicgeeks about how lowkey tragic it is that the only way jason can escape his unfortunate circumstances is by turning into a crimefighter, and although i do think bruce & robin!jason's relationship is often so very sweet, it is also a story of how a young boy is ultimately shaped by the destiny his father wrote for him.
but what's interesting to me is how #409 is in conversation with #408. i've seen very few people mention this, but bruce doesn't instantly adopt jason after the tire meet-cute for a few reasons, the biggest reason of all being that he's in a phase where he's really questioning his impact as batman. dick's "death" in the media leads to a public outcry against batman, an outcry that vicki vale supports ("who better than bruce wayne to understand -- and take a stand against -- the violence of a batman? violence which can only lead to more violence.") bruce himself begins to wonder why he returns to crime alley as batman on his parents' anniversary, only to never visit again for the rest of the year. this is why he entrusts ma gun with jason. he outright says she's doing more for crime alley than he is (lol). bruce does not actually have any hubris in #408 and acknowledges that robin might be a dangerous job for little kids (heck, he even thought it was dangerous for dick, who was in his twenties atp).
but #409 undoes all of the developments in #408 through the reveal that ma gunn was secretly a villain this whole time. and this ends up accidentally becoming a sort of,,,,,fate thing for bruce. there's a world's finest issue (#7, i think?) where bruce says he was destined to meet dick and jason, and i think that mentality applies here as well. bruce thought he was going about things the wrong way, but when ma gunn is proven to be a villain and jason once again stumbles into his life at around the same time, it can't be anything else but fate that brought them together. bruce tried to hand jason off to someone else, to do things the non-batman way, but in the end, TO HIM, it feels like a sign that jason is back in batman's life. that they took ma gun down together. combine this with his empty nest syndrome post-dick and the craving he has as an orphan to create bonds and families, it must have all connected in bruce's mind like a puzzle. jason was meant for this life.
BUT THEN. the garzonas case happens, and ethiopia happens, and now bruce....once again begins questioning destiny, questioning himself, wondering if he fated jason to his death or if jason was doomed from the beginning. and then UTRH happens, and the "fate" aspect of it amplifies even more. now the question is - was jason always destined to become the red hood? which is just,,,,,so exemplative of how pattern-brained bruce is. everything has to fit a narrative; if something happens, there must always have been clues that led up to it. everything has got to be a part of a larger puzzle that he doesn't have the pieces to, because he doesn't know how to make sense of his own world without all of it having meaning. he can't fathom chance or acts of randomness. it's all about manifestation and destiny. there has to be a reason for everything, a clue he just hasn't found yet, because even at his grown age, bruce still hasn't made peace with the unknown and that things can just,,,,happen, even to the people we thought it would never happen to.
"batboys" where's duke
"robins" where's steph
"batman's kids" where's cass
