Ok I have a question about Hadestown and I swear to God this is genuine and not meant to be rude I think I'm maybe just missing something but like

From my understanding Orpheus turning back for Eurydice was supposed to be an act of love? Like in all the retellings I've heard it's always something like she tripped and he instinctively looked back to help her or he made it out and, in his excitement, turned to her before she was technically out.

But in Hadestown, doesn't Eurydice choose to go with Hades because she was hungry? At least in the production I saw, she didn't die. And to me that changes the context of Orpheus leading her out. Because of course he would look back. She had already trusted Hades over him once before and he can't guarantee that she won't go hungry again even if they do make it back to the surface. All the doubt that he faces from the Fates and his own head is all based on a kernel of truth.

That interpretation, to me, makes it more tragic. But it also makes it feel less like a love story. He didn't look back for love, it actually felt like he looked back because he no longer trusts her. And I don't like that lol. That's why I'm hoping there's something I'm missing? I love the Eurydice and Orpheus story, I love the idea that Orpheus will always look back. That to go to the underworld in the first place was to look back for Eurydice. It's just the context of this "look back" scenario leaves a bad taste in my mouth idk
