I'll add more characters and story to this as I go. If there's a situation or a character you want to see, let me know. If there's something I should expand on, let me know too.
Was out buying stuff because I got new guinea pigs and I went to this pet store near the rescue. Online, looks great, sells dogs, which is fine. But then I go in and it's just
They're stacked on top of each other and I'm just physically sick at this point. They're so young and the people supposed to take care of them just aren't. They're so tired and have given up. Sure the dogs are AKC certified, but what even is this?
Guys, help, there's a character whose name sounds a bit too close to "kitten" so when big, burly, strong man is saying his name, it sounds like "come here, kitten", instead of "come here l, mc" and I just...
Drawing this is theraputic in a way... cus i headcanon jon as studying astronomy amd being a professor so it's like seeing him grow up doing what he loves 😭
i texted this to my brother and was like “is this insensitive because like......... he did kill a lot of people” and he said it’s probably fine and he’s a lawyer so [ID: Two panels of Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano from Clone Wars, paraphrasing an Alyssa Edwards video. Panel 1: Anakin looking off to the side as he jokingly says “I always said if I wasn’t the best jedi alive by 25, I would become a serial killer,” Panel 2: Ahsoka looks worriedly up at Anakin, asking “Well, boy, how old are you? I’m getting nervous....” /END ID]
Why: It’s the “flippy” form. In cannon known as the “aggression form”. cue double knee drop.
force abilities: force visions
Backstory: Came to the temple at three. Bruce tried doing the same thing to Dick his Master did for him, but Dick doesn’t see him as a father figure, so their partnership is tenuous to say the least. Towards the end of his padawan years, he and his master have a falling out, centering especially on whether or not to act upon the visions Dick is getting. It takes a talking down from a young initiate Tim to stop Dick from cutting off his Padawan braid. He doesn’t, but spends most of his time outside of his Master’s quarters for the rest of his padawanship. He gets knighted and spends some time at the temple on Tython and helping the ExploroCorp before returning to the Corusaunt Temple.
Jason Todd
Lightsaber color: Magenta/pink (and has nightmares it goes red)
Favored Form: Juyo/Vaapad (7)
Why: Ferocity form. Balancing light and dark. Control his inner weakness by controlling his anger.
backstory: His mother was addicted to Spice and when he was three, Jason found out he could float some of the Spice to his Mom while the dealer wasn’t looking. A dealer wasn’t too happy when he saw a literal child stealing from him, so he threatened to shoot the kid. A jedi comes up behind them and mind tricks the dealer to not kill a child, but Jason’s mom is still horrified that her toddler is stealing drugs for her with the Force. She shoves her kid into the Seeker’s arms and just sobs for a while. Jason ends up as Bruce Wayne’s padawan and as his second go at teaching, it’s easier for the Master to explain the force and the ways of the Jedi. It also helps that this kid isn’t looking to jump off every tall object. However, one mission leads them too close to the Mustafar system and a Sith named Darth Joker (name to be fixed) tortures young Jason until he can hardly remember who he is. Jason ends up on Korriban for a while and is able to blend in with the Sith with his pink lightsaber. Cass, recognising her lineage member, is able to rescue him from the Sith Academy. Jason is still in the mind healers, his future knighting still a ways away.
Tim Drake
Lightsaber color: Green
Favored Form: Soresu (3), jar kai
Why: Protective stance, close quarter fighting. Double blades.
force abilities: makes force bonds easily. Bonded with Bruce (Master-Padawan), Steph (Crechemates), Cass (sibling), Jason (battle-bond), Kon (romantic…)
backstory: Parents dropped him off when he was one after a crying fit almost crashed their ship. Destroying their house, they could deal with, maybe it was an earthquake. A very… centralized and contained? earthquake. People started noticing that Tim might be force sensitive and a couple even tried making a grab for him, so the Drakes just gave up and handed him to the Jedi temple. They message each other a couple times a year, only after Tim’s friend, cough Bart, hacked into the Coruscant Senate Dome and got the Drake’s personal comm codes. There’s been impromptu tea between the couple and Tim (with a jittery Kon or Dick nearby). He was field knighted after killing a group of rogue Mandolorians who were trying to kill Jedi younglings while his master was indisposed (something he and his master still fight over, but the knighting stuck so…).
Damian al Ghul Wayne
Lightsaber color: green
Favored Form: Makashi (2), Ataru (4)
why: Darth granddad trained him in Makashi, Dick’s form is Ataru.
backstory: Darth Daemonium’s grandson, Damian gets picked up by Knight Dick Grayson while he was trying to find his lineage brother, Jason, on Jedha. The two return sans Jason to the temple. Master Bruce Wayne isn’t pleased and he and the Knight get into a screaming match. Just to further annoy his former master, Grayson adopts Damian as his padawan. It takes some time for the two to become comfortable around each other, but the master-padawan pair now work as well as the infamous “dynamic duo” of Master Wayne and Knight Grayson. He finds his new crystal on Lothal when a Loth cat drops it into his hands.
I was thinking about Red Hood (maybe a bit too much, it seems) more than Jaybin, but no, new Knight Dick would enjoy teaching Jaybin the Ataru flips like Dick liked teaching Jaybin gymnastics. RH always seems to want to be on his feet more than in the air, so I gave him Juyo, but if that wasn't working, he'd probably switch to Ataru
Not an immigrant but I researched what anon was saying about Kon's name and they're correct, his name is only one or the other so like, at worst it sounds really ignorant like saying Bruce Batman Wayne or something. Ig I can see the immigrant issue though. Having a birth name and a new given name for their new life aren't mixed.
I know Kon's name is either Kon-El or Conner in cannon. For this one AU, I'm calling him Kon-El Kent to get that Star Wars name vibe.
In other stories as seen here:
I only call Kon "Kon". I haven't seemed to have written anything else with Kon. I haven't really written anything with Jon except for
Does it sound a little weird to call Conner "Kon-El Kent"? Sure. Could I even let you call me stupid, sure. I'm still new to DC. But I don't think me going down the route I am with the Super's names in this AU is "anti-immigrant".
1. The Super's refugee status (because they're not really immigrants if they didn't have a choice) is not a central plot point in the AU. They were going to be little terrors to Luthor.
2. The Supers are no longer in the same context. Do you get mad at "Krypton never blew up" AUs?
3. "While data on how fully and quickly immigrants come to ‘resemble’ the societies they move to are rare, the adoption of majority-sounding names among foreign-born populations is a relatively well documented feature of cultural assimilation and an empirically important dimension of native culture that could potentially be taken up by immigrants for their children."
When immigrating to a new place and assimilating, which most immigrants to for "economic and social achievements" while their new government forces "immigrants to adopt the language, identity, and customs of the dominant culture". Adopting a "majority" sounding name makes their "children’s origin partially invisible and perhaps protect them from some forms of discrimination." This also happens within the BIPOC community as POC will give their children a more "White" sounding name, but we're not here for race.
So the part of changing one's name or even naming your own kids a "majority" sounding name comes from discrimination on the immigrants. They would want to keep their name, but because of the discrimination faced in their new environment, it is disadvantageous if not dangerous to sound "other".
4. The adoption angle, which I have personal connection to as my uncles have multiple last names due to adoption. Since Kal, Kon, and Jon were already named, so they would have a cultural connection to their name (see above). It also "preserv[es] a link to the child's history." Legally, the new family can change the child's name, but when "kids come in to the family past infancy, they don’t like to have their names changed." They already have a connection to their name. Adding a new last name to tie them to their new guardians is also an option, which is what my uncles did when they were adopted. My cousins were adopted at a young age and their entire names were changed to protect them from a drug addict mother and an abusive father.
So to tie this all up, in this one story where the SuperFam keeps their birth names and adds their adoptive parent's/grandparent's last names to their name to make their names fit the "majority" sounding naming system in Star Wars, in the AU, they are still going through an immigrant experience.
My question for you is that do you not like it because you haven't encountered this type of story before or because this type of story does not fit your mold of what "immigrant" means?
Before we overshadow the voices of actual immigrants (and in the Supers cases, refugees), let's stop, think, and listen to the voices of actual immigrants and refugees.
My sources (cause I don't just pull things out my ass)
For immigrant names
For names of adoptees
This'll be the last thing I say on Kon and Jon's names unless I change them
FYI Kon's name is either Kon El, or Conner Kent. Nothing else. Kon El Kent is NOT his name, and never was his name, just like how Clark's name had never ever been Kal El Kent. AU or not that is not his name and is super disrespectful to immigrants that have two names. Tumblr doesn't fw this and you might open the doors to being listed as anti-immigrant.
I did it because it's Star Wars and his and other Super Fam names would be like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Bo-Katan Kryze. When I write super fam outside of this AU, it'd be the two different names. It's more keeping the birth name and adopting a last name from within the culture (and to make their names sound more Star Wars). Here, their birth names are Kon-El, Jon-El, and Kal-El and added the last name Kent because Clark was trained under the Kents and took their last name.
If immigrants come to me and ask me to change Kon's name, I will. My family has had their name changed for a multitude of reasons. If someone tried writing adoption name changes in a bad light, I'd probably have something to say myself.
Why: Defense, but more motion than Soresu. Looked at Tim and said “I wanna beat him.” Wally started tutoring the padawan in Form V.
force abilities: teleportation
backstory: Knight Barry Allen came back with the toddler and said he was “buzzing in the force.” At least this Initiate was an easier retrieval than Wallace West…
Wally West
Lightsaber color: Orange
Favored Form: Shien/Djem So (5)
Why: Defense against melee weapons.
Force abilities: Teleportation
backstory: Comes from a planet where force sensitivities are feared, and because of that, Wally was neglected for the first couple years of his life. When the Seeker came to the planet, he found Wally in a crib too small for the boy and a combative Rudolph West. It took a while for the boy to settle into the Creche, but he became close friends with Dick Grayson, Donna Troy, and Garth Kenobi from Krayt clan. Padawan Roy Harper gets frequent visits from the initiates and they tail the poor teen around.
Kon-El Kent*
Lightsaber color: Blue
Favored Form:
Backstory: Knight Kal-El Kent was tricked into touching a Sith artifact by politician (and dark side user) Alexander Luthor. After defending himself enough to make it back to his ship and into hyperspace, Kal is walking around his ship and finds a suspiciously familiar looking toddler in his cargo hold. Who then proceeds to kick him in his ven’cabur.
Jon-El Kent
Lightsaber color: Blue
Favored Form: Shii-cho (1)
Why: It’s the initiate’s form and babie is still learning.
Backstory: If you ask Kal, he won’t say anything. You ask Kon, he and his master found Jon on the side of the road on Nevarro.
Garth Kenobi***
Lightsaber color: Blue
Favored form: Shien/Djem So (5), Jar Kai
Why: “Two swords better than one” “That’s not how you choose a form. Jar Kai isn’t even a form, it’s a technique, padawan.” *Looks over at Wally* “Form V”
Backstory: A seeker found the initiate by a river hovering fish in bubbles and just swept him into his ship. His Master Arthur Curry has had to fish Garth out of ponds and fountains multiple times, especially early in his padawan years. Now that he’s knighted, Garth sits in the Room of a Thousand Fountains (“like a normal person for once” “shut it West, you can’t say nothing about normal”) for his meditations.
Roy Harper
Lightsaber Color: Green
Favored Form: Ataru (4)
Why: Let me call form IV the “can’t sit still” form, okay?
backstory: Son to ExploroCorp members, his parents give him to the Jedi temple proper because of how dangerous their work is. During his early padawan years, Master Brave Bow trains him on Kashyyk, helping Wookies fight off slavers. However, after a rescue gone wrong, the only survivors are padawan Harper and newly Knighted Oliver Queen. As a last request to Master Brave Bow, Knight Queen trains Roy until he is knighted. However, that’s about all the connection he gives the kid. Oliver feels bad that he couldn’t save Roy’s Master, so he distances himself after the knighting. Roy feels alone with most of his friends out of the temple and goes back to what his original Master was doing on Kashyyk. Within a month though, things go wrong and the destabilized Roy taps into the dark side to save a group of young Wookies before they could be sold into slavery. He doesn’t see this as a problem (because he saved the children) and doesn’t see what the dark side is doing to him. When Master Queen goes to Kashyyk… It’s not good. Roy lashes out and, in his anger, kills a Wookie. Horrified, Roy runs off and becomes a bounty hunter for a while, wistfully looking at his lightsaber at times. The once-initiates that followed him around the temple are now on the look out for him (as much as they can, they still have their own lives, of course), but to say they were surprised when a scared Roy walks into the temple holding a baby he calls “Lian” and cries in his former Master’s arms… The four of them stand around them awkwardly at the reunion.
**that’s not his name, that’s not his name. Well, Kenobi means from no where so it works. Does that mean Garth is Stewjoni? ... Yes? No. Sure. He is now.
DC Star Wars AU Master Post
*It’s Conner Kent or Kon-El. This is a STAR WARS AU and I do what I want.
Why: Overpower opponents, but less lethal. About balancing. Strength of will as important as physicality. Mental discipline over physical strikes.
force abilities: force barrier
backstory: Fought in the Great Galactic War and friends to the Waynes. Healer Thomas Wayne was on his team multiple times throughout the war and defended Martha Wayne multiple times as well. The three of them kept up communications after the war. A consular Jedi, spending most of his time keeping the new peace around the Galactic senate (and calming his friend’s nerves that yes, his wife isn’t blowing anything up today). He takes on the Wayne’s child after their death as his first padawan.
Bruce Wayne
lightsaber color: blue
Favored Form: Ataru (4)
Why: The aggression form. Alfred needed to tire his padawan out somehow and grabbed his friend to tutor a new padawan Bruce in Ataru. He was accidentally a little too good at the form over others (like his master’s preferred form).
backstory: Father was a medicorps member, mother was a politician. Master Pennyworth was friends to the Waynes and would take the initiate out to see the couple some times. The last time the couple sees their son, they are killed by bounty hunters. Master Pennyworth protects Bruce and takes him on as his first padawan. He is trained and becomes friends with Jim Gordon along the way. When he is knighted, he is hesitant to take on a padawan, but initiate Grayson reminded Bruce of himself as a kid. And the raised eyebrow Master Pennyworth gave him the third time Dick ran away from Bruce cackling, he finally asked Dick to be his Padawan.
