From the Nashville Zoo’s fb page! Here’s the petition, please please please take a moment to add your name (even if you’re not from Nashville!). If you are from Tennessee, contact your representatives and make it clear that the people do not want this data center. This is an AZA accredited zoo which is home to several species of critically endangered animals, we NEED to protect it. Make your voice heard!
Because people will pay attention to cute animals, here are some of the critically endangered/endangered species housed at the Nashville Zoo!
The Amur Leopard and Clouded Leopard (which recently celebrated its 50th cub born at the zoo!)
The Sumatran Tiger
The Red Ruffed Lemur and Ring-Tailed Lemur
The Cotton-Top Tamarin and White-Cheeked Gibbon
The Colobus Monkey and De Brazza’s Monkey
And the Mexican Spider Monkey!
Look at them!!!! Look at them and fight like hell to save them!!!!
easy to miss that one of the reasons maternal mortality is diminished so extremely by modern medicine is that modern medicine makes it so much more possible to identify the pregnancies that will die and take you with them, or are otherwise unacceptably high risk. and then discontinue those ones safely, before it's too late.
thought about this because it's so frustrating when people argue that 'dying in childbirth' is a historical sort of event that doesn't happen nowadays (false) and therefore is irrelevant to the legal status of abortion, since it's not a real danger.
except it super is, and i think a lot of people haven't noticed that this argument in addition to simply being incorrect is basically the same as when people say we don't need vaccines for deadly diseases because no one gets those now anyway.
like yeah one reason for that is we vaccinate everybody ffs.
Note: after the end of Roe v Wade in the US, the maternal mortality rate (and the infant mortality rate) are showing clear increases in the states with the strictest anti-abortion laws.
Forcing people to carry high risk or non viable pregnancies to term kills.
sometimes people experiencing psychosis and/or mania will come up to you on the street and talk in confusing or upsetting ways. your job is to either have a regular human-to-human conversation with that person or politely leave. your job is not to call 911. do not call 911. you might kill that person if you call 911.
I don't even have the energy to screenshot and respond to your tags- what the actual fuck is wrong with you? "the cops are scared and rightfully so" "mental health calls are the scariest for cops" OH so this isn't about the safety of psychotic & manic people this is about piggy feelings?
and no, actually, this is not USA specific and no, actually, people from other countries should not ignore this post. police violence and sanism weren't invented in the US and they are certainly not unique to here. if you (or anyone) thinks that this bullshit doesn't happen elsewhere then you are not listening.
cops r Some Guy with a Gun
do we want Some Guy with a Gun in this situation? answer is usually "NO"
This is legitimately useful reframing. A while ago I started replacing the word "cop" in my vocabulary with "a man with a gun." It really puts things into perspective.
This homeless person is making me uncomfortable. Should I call [a man with a gun]?
My neighbor is having a loud party. Should I get [a man with a gun] involved?
There are some teenagers skateboarding. Do you think [a man with a gun] would get rid of them for me?
It makes it very clear what you're saying. I can call a man with a gun to threaten or hurt someone mildly inconveniencing me. You're not calling the cops, you're calling A MAN WITH A GUN into a situation that does not warrant a firearm handled by a volatile lunatic who will not be held accountable for his actions.

Gaycation - “USA”
Strange racists and homophobes on the internet seem to have access to an alternate way cooler version of TV than me. "every white character on TV is in an interracial relationship" "every show has a gay couple in it" "main characters keep having to secretly be bisexual and nonbinary" "every show has gratuitous full frontal nudity" like damn promise?? What channel???
as a black gay person real like where y'all be finding this stuff pass the name
for real though, those DO NOT WATCH OR YOU'LL CORRUPT YOUR CHILDREN lists put out by conservative christian family groups is where I find all the stellar tv shows. Like, shit I didn't know half of those existed, thanks for finding them for me, gonna go watch 30 hours of gay tv now!
I think I know how this works.
For personal context, before I went to the '98 Burning Man festival, one of the things I'd read from a couple different journalists was that "everybody" runs around naked. Which, fine by me, I'd already spent a lot of time in clothing-optional spaces, I'm not fanatic about it but it's nice.
So I got there early and set up a public shade structure on one of Black Rock City's main roads and spent most of each afternoon just watching the crowds go by. I don't remember seeing more than one actually naked person the whole week. I think a topless woman passed by my intersection maybe every half an hour, sometimes once an hour. So why in the hell were people, normally pretty smart and observant writers, coming away with the impression that everybody was naked?
Then I remembered an unrelated passage from Joel Garreau's great book about the history of the outer-ring suburbs, Edge City. Mall developers told him flat-out that they tried to keep the crowds in their malls less than 5% black. Not because they themselves were racist, but because they had determined, experimentally, that if more than 5% of the people in the mall are black, the median white shopper will wrongly describe the mall as at least half black, as mostly black. And not a few of them would describe it, at 6% black, as a mall where "only black people go." Why?
Because, emotionally, they were still upset over the last one when the next one came into view.
Same as the journalists describing Black Rock City as all naked. Same as the right-wing religious culture warriors describing television as entirely mixed-race and gender non-conforming. Not because it's even vaguely true, we know that, but because they haven't gotten over their discomfort over the last one by the time the next one comes along. The anger, not the stimulus, is the part that's continuous, so their mind lies to them that it's "all" the thing they can't get over.
Similar effect for the presence/proportion of women in things, by the way: https://health.howstuffworks.com/mental-health/human-nature/perception/how-17-equals-496-the-amazing-multiplying-women.htm
This works with literally *anything* people get upset by, btw. If you learn how to use it, it can be very powerful.
You want a local gay bar? Have literally just a few gay people show up every weekend, and slowly it becomes a gay bar.
You want the local airbnb to be undesirable and shut down? You only need like, 2 or 3 people to stand around looking like "junkies" for people to stop renting that place.
Shit, you want your local brunch place to have more vegan options? Just have a few, literally, maybe 3 or 4, people go in and ask for vegan options.
This is also why calling your representatives works as well.

How about we just have like... hey trans people, post your pay links or wishlist or whatever you got. No limits, no trans excluded, intersex welcome, any and all genders off the social conventions included. Promote other people's stuff too if it will help. I'll just reblog em a bunch. This is for everyone, anyone, and it should go without saying not to use it to police who is in our community. We are better than that.
I need a reblog to share your info, please use those, not comments or tags. I try to reblog immediately every instance I see between 10am and 10pm, everything else goes into the queue.
Additionally, Reddit has some donation resources, which are outlined and linked in this post. However, there are potential difficulties associated with these resources, with more details in this post.

Anyway it's pride so
I'm nonbinary and my partner is trans (in a much more visible way than I am). I just got laid off, and unemployment is a fucking joke. I'm trying to get certifications to prove I can do what I've been doing for the last 10 years, but they all cost money, and we live in the most expensive place in the US and don't have a good way to get out (also leaving would almost certainly mean going to a place far less safe for us).
If you wanna throw a dollar or so my direction, I would be very grateful

my last paycheck was slightly over $400, and i desperately need to get my windshield replaced before it shatters, & my brakes need fixing soon, soooo.... tbh now would be an awesome time for a random act of kindness. 😮💨💜
my partner @pyrussprite / @breadball is also an amazing digital artist & takes commissions!
My partner and I are both getting several surgeries soon, which will be both gender affirming and medically life-changing in nature. Hospitals cant feed us because we have some extremely high maintenance allergies, so on top of normal recovery cost, we need to get enough microwavable/pre-packaged food to last several weeks of hospital stays.

I've been in a rough spot for several months after my old boss sold his business, being an out trans woman in the current climate toward us has made finding someone who will hire me in the conservative (US) south extremely difficult. My savings are totally drained, and I am at a very real risk of homelessness.

if we dont pay $411 in rent by the 6th we are on the hook for about $2511 dollars as per our lease agreement. work isn't gonna get me all the way to $411 by then, and job applications have been less than fruitful, so any assistance would be great! if you want me to draw you something in return, send/dm me proof of payment and i'm more than happy to do some art in exchange.

Listen, marketing-as-exploitation discussions aside, Rainbow Capitalism is, has been, and continues to be the canary in the coal mine of social acceptance for the queer community.
If you’ll all pardon my Americentrism for a moment, the amount, visibility, and flamboyance of Pride merch available in clothing, home goods, and comestibles stores is a DIRECT reflection of how safe it is to be queer in public in the United States.
How? Simple. Out groups aren’t profitable. If you’re not “acceptable” in the current social climate, big franchise businesses will not market to you. (Prime example - Look how quickly Target dropped all their Pride merch after having been wall-to-wall rainbows every June for almost a decade prior.)
Sure, capitalism sucks and being viewed as an exploitable marketing demographic isn’t a fun concept.
HOWEVER.
The grim truth is that being normalized enough to be considered profitable by corporations IS A GOOD THING in terms of the barometer of social acceptance.
Same thing goes for smaller businesses that throw kitschy Pride events or even just put a token rainbow flag in the window or somewhere inside the shop. That’s a level of acceptance that DID NOT EXIST thirty years ago, and I can tell you because I was there.
The fact that we can scoff and bitch about being an exploitable marketing demographic nowadays means we have made GIGANTIC strides since the 1990s. It also speaks to the fact that the drive and the conversation surrounding LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance are continuing. And getting louder.
You can be cynical about it if you want. But I will take a store that puts out lip-service rainbow merch over a world that pretends we don’t exist any day of the week. Because that will always mean something.
Sincerely, An Elder Queer
Agreed, and also, it has always struck me as a little bit of a double-standard in queer politics when people used to point out the exclusion of queerness from mainstream capitalist products as evidence of their marginalization (e.g., there are no m/m or f/f wedding cards)
Yet, when they start being included, they are like “well, that’s just capitalism taking advantage of us, so it doesn’t count.” Like, you can’t use your EXCLUSION from something as evidence of general societal marginalization and then claim that once you’ve started to be included, it is politically meaningless. You don’t really get to have it both ways. That’s moving the political goal posts.
I get that we shouldn’t consider Target pride merchandise as like the pinnacle of queer politics or even the pinnacle of queer inclusion. I get that inclusion in capitalist intuitions is a very ambivalent form of social progress. But the truth is, capitalism is a big part of what creates our social reality right now (unfortunately).
Capitalism makes TV shows, and movies, and books, and ads, and greeting cards, and toys, and clothing, and, and…
When every single aspect of commercial social reality excludes queerness, that DOES create a real sense of social alienation. I don’t love that capitalism is responsible for creating so much of our collective social reality. But granting that it does, I think we’re forced to accept that our inclusion in it IS politically and socially important.
And yes we should still be trying to resist capitalism as the primary means of meeting human needs. But we can resist treating capitalism as an inevitability or an inherent good, AND ALSO acknowledge that our inclusion within it remains politically important while it still holds so much power and responsibility for creating our shared reality.
See also a recent article from NPR (published May 30, 2026) discussing how pride celebrations have struggled financially with the loss of corporate sponsorships. Organizing big visible events (and fairly compensating the labor of those who make them possible) is expensive.
Public support for the LGBTQ+ community by corporations has become politically risky, public relations expert says.
Tumblr added a pride flag flourish for pride month that very specifically doesn't have trans colours. After months of undeniably transphobic moderation and randomly banning people. Happy fucking pride.
The thing i dont think outsiders are grasping about the impact of typhoon Halong is that Alaska still has seasons with non negotiable constraints on what is physically possible to achieve.
All our politicians are being very particular about calling evacuees "refugees not homeless" (because no one hates homeless people quite like Alaska) but the reality is that it is mid October and money and willpower doesn't actually rewrite the weather. Let's pretend for a second we have a sympathetic and functional government, that can dump infinite manpower and resources onto a problem that affects a tiny batch of people at the far ends of the earth.
There are no roads. The last fuel barge for the year left and you couldn't get another one out there even if it was already on its way. Heavy equipment and the fuel to run it that's not already there will need to be airlifted out to the villages. Luckily, Alaska is the land of batshit insane pilots who will put a plane down on any surface that looks vaguely flatish, so we can do that but the major issue is the impending freeze up.
If you live somewhere without the kind of winter that we have, it's difficult to even wrap your head around the concept. The ground will freeze, the water will freeze and all the flood damages will essentially become immovable bits of landscape until break up, at which point everything will crumble and rot. Freeze up is maybe 2 weeks out, 3 if we're lucky, but it wouldn't be unheard of if it happened by next weekend now that the low pressure system moved out. The ability to dry things out in that window will dictate what's still standing by spring.
Recovery will be limited to whatever can be achieved in the next few days, and even under the absolute best circumstances that isn't a lot. Rebuilding efforts can only start in spring, and all the issues
For scale, I've added the villages affected in blue. If you draw a line between Barrow (Utqiagvik) and Anchorage the road system is on the east side of the state. The furthest west it is possible to drive on the continuous road system is Anchor Point which is the end of the Kenai peninsula below Anchorage.
As of an hour ago Trump signed 25 million in Federal aide despite the government shut down. FEMA somehow hasn't updated declarations to reflect that, but hey, the government is shut down, give them a minute or so. The entire congressional delegation is begging for a state of emergency and as of yet there's no change there.
Dunleavy is asking for 100% funding for the next 90 days, which is... that puts us into January. As far as rebuilding goes, that's not helpful. See ya in 8 months.
The extra funds would have covered the bulk of costs related to debris removal and emergency protective measures, costs that the state says
This isn't actually surprising, or even out of the ordinary, other than the fact that the governor confidently declared that FEMA would super totally definitely pay for a 100% before damages were even totaled.
i've been phasing the phrase 'google it' out of my vocabulary and going back to 'look it up'. fuck you youve lost your generic trademark privileges

Life outside seems easier than the 'prison life' we endure in Gaza. I try to imagine other places where life is difficult, but I realize that even the harshest environments are open; at least there is a way out. Gaza is a closed prison. A rocket could kill you at any moment, food and water are rationed, and the heaviest burden is being besieged by memories, destruction, and graves. It is a constant cycle of physical and psychological torment.
Prices in Gaza have started to rise unusually, and goods have almost disappeared from the markets. Types of vegetables are scarce and expensive, and meats have vanished from the markets too. I mean, what's happening is the beginning of a new famine; food is expensive and scarce in the markets!
Every help is appreciated guys you can DONATE HERE

Please remember that Pride is important because someone tonight still believes they’re better off dead than being themselves.
i think with how many jokes we make about pride and how happy we are about it, we need to understand why we have it. to appreciate people who lost their lives or are currently losing their lives for being themselves. remember the people who fought to give us the rights we have today. there are still so many people who are homophobic or transphobic, and that is what we need pride for. it is our job to be proud of ourselves so the bigots don’t win. show them we’re not going away. pride month is about loving yourself and others no matter their sexuality
