Alien: You’re telling me that in times of great distress humans have been known to suddenly gain the strength necessary to lift objects more than a dozen times their own weight?!
Human: Yeah, it’s called “hysterical strength” and it usually happens in life-or-death situations, like when someone gets stuck under a car or something and someone lifts the car to get them out. We can’t really test it though, ‘cause it only happens spontaneously.
Alien: Humans have the ability to tap into untold strength and power and you don’t even know how you do it?
Human: Pretty much, yeah. We think it has something to do with temporary analgesia, so we just don’t feel the pain we should when we pick up a 3000-pound car.
Alien: YOUR PAIN RESPONSE JUST SHUTS OFF?
Human: Yeah, it’s like an adrenaline thing? Do you not have that?
Alien: Fuck you and your entire species of tiny juggernauts.
Did this post just use a dialogue format to trick me into learning science
Had to check this out on wikipedia at least and boy was that a ride
SCIENCE!
Just so you guys know. Hysterical strength is basically your body not holding back and going %100 though there is a great danger of you hurting yourself or breaking something since your ignoring pain and going %100. There was a case where a kid deadlifted a car to save a sibling but, cracked 8 of his teeth during it because he was clenching his jaw so hard. So whilst you can lift a car or fight off polar bears. Your probably going to break something. Because most of the time when we are “giving our all” we are only giving a fraction of what we could give and this is because if we truly give our all we can seriously injure ourselves.
This is literally an explanation of Deku and his abilities with One For All.
Humans naturally hold back because our muscles have enough strength to rip themselves apart
STOP GIVING THE ALIENS REASONS NOT TO VISIT.
@celestial-naiad the whole one million percent smash was actually hysterical strength, according to horikoshi.
on an unrelated note, did you know that if all the muscles in your back clenched at once your spine would shatter? have fun!!
Thats a horrifying and empowering thought at the same time.
Also: when you are sufficiently electrocuted and “thrown back” what is actually happening is your muscles contracting so hard and fast you essentially fling yourself away from the dangerous thing.
This is the same stuff that stops you from biting off your own fingers and whatnot. Our brains just say ‘no, don’t,’ whenever we try to do some dumbass shit, until we reach the point where it’s either do the dumbass shit or die/watch someone else die. I think it’s really cool though that we can shut off this function for others than ourselves. It shows a lot how we truly are social creatures at our core, that we don’t just do this when it’s our own body that might die, but for others in our community as well.
This is why a zombie would be extremely terrifying for a short period, and then neutralize itself. No fear and no pain means it could rip apart the gates to your fortress with its bare hands, but it would tear its arms or break its back in the process and never do anything very dangerous again.
This also means that anybody with a magical super-healing power would essentially get super strength out of the mix for free if they could get past the psychological limitations. That’s probably what makes vampires so strong; they don’t actually put out any more force than a normal human but they repair any damage they take in the process almost instantly.
@krunchy-tuna why would you hide this hilarious comment in the tags
Aight I know I’m OP but I gotta reblog for appreciation of that comment

It was hopeless.
The Death Eaters numbers weren’t going down. And maybe they were, but not visibly, not enough. Kill one Death Eater, and five more would take their place.
Hermione had given people new, more destructive spells and Ron’s strategies were getting more and more geared towards mass destruction. But it wasn’t good enough.
It shot down morale and everyone was getting desperate.
Harry was getting desperate.
She’d asked Kreacher, which was the start of a series of bad decisions.
Kreacher knew the Black Library better than anyone, and gave Harry a book bound in questionable leather.
Harry took one look at the book, and felt her skin crawl. She decided not to ask the house-elf questions.
“Thank you, Kreacher,” she said.
She read the book when it was supposed to be her turn to be sleeping, and lost her appetite at the horrifying and terrible rituals that the book had. She was pale and unhappy reading the rituals.
Still she found one. One ritual among hundreds that suited her purpose. A ritual to “Summone a Moste Powerful and Chaotic Monstere.”
Harry read it dozens of times, memorized the words and knew the sacrifice.
Desperation and bad decisions led her to the forest with a stone floor. She had left a note with Dean, hopefully, it would stall her friends.
Her hands remained determinedly steady even as she carved the damned sigils on the floor with an enchanted knife. Her hand slipped at one point and bloodied the runes on the floor. She paid it no mind, bandaging her hand and continuing again. She didn’t dare use magic until the ritual was complete and she broke the circle. She endured her throbbing hand and at one point forgot about it, she was so focused on getting it right.
She took a deep breath and started the chant, just as Hermione and Ron sprinted into the clearing.
But Harriet had already started, the words coming out of her mouth frosty and hot in turns, some words tumbling out as heavy as a boulder, others coming out quickly and speedily like an eel.
Ron stopped Hermione, more aware than her about the dangers of interrupting a ritual.
“…in sumptus vitae meae,” she finished with a shout, slamming her hands on the sigils firmly, smearing it with blood. At one point, she had started to bleed from her injured hands.
“Harry, no!” Hermione screamed, held back by Ron’s hands on her shoulders. Of course, her friend could understand the Latin.
Smoke started rising from the blood and sigils, and from that smoke, something with tall with horns emerged.
Harry would be panicking, except she had gone so far from panic that she’d circled around to glassy calm. She’d be hyperventilating later.
If there was a later.
“At the cost of your life, huh,” a lovely, deep voice said inside the circle. “That’s a very interesting payment.”
The smoke cleared, and standing inside the circle was a man. Or as close to a man as a demon could get. His horns were long and curled back, the points curling at the tips and shining a dull red. His eyes shone yellow and his teeth were very sharp. His feet were cloven hooves and covered in shaggy fur, with a tail that flicked as he stood.
And his face. Harry instinctively shied away from looking at his too perfect, too beautiful face.
“Whatever is your trouble, lovely summoner?” the demon asked.
“Me and my people are at war,” she said, as boldly as she could manage. “And I am willing to pay anything for you to help us win.”
The demons beautiful face started to smile, a slash of a terrible smile on an otherwise inhumanly beautiful face.
“Break the circle, dear one. And I will seal the contract with you. You’ve already given me such lovely blood,” he whispered, a hypnotic ring in his voice.
Harry found herself moving despite Hermione and Ron’s shouts in her ears. She broke the circle with the knife still in her hand and the demon stepped out.
As he did, there was a ripple in the world like an invisible curtain, and the goats feet, horns and tail vanished. In his place was a man.
Still beautiful, but no longer inhumanly so. Enough of a change that she could look at his face without feeling that otherworldly aura.
“I am a chaos demon,” he declared. “And we seal these things with a kiss.”
The glassy calm broke, and Harry managed to squeak out, “What?” before the demons lips were on hers and she was consumed by the best kiss she’d ever had, all heat and passion.
After a minute, he pulled away and smiled at her dazed face.
“Stay here, my bride,” he said.
Harry crumpled to the forest floor and her best friends rushed to her, holding her hands and touching her shoulders. Hermione looked seconds away from crying. Ron looked like he wanted to wrap her up in bubble wrap.
“He just called me bride,” Harry managed weakly. “What just happened?”
Ron gave a tired huff into her neck, hugging her almost desperately.
Hermione gave an exhausted sigh.
“Harry,” she began slowly. “I don’t know how to tell you this, but I think a chaos demon just propositioned you.”
When Harry whined pathetically, Ron started to give little huffs of hysterical laughter.

FREE ART PROGRAMS
So recently I came across a fellow artist who was struggling to find a free art program, and considering dropping the large amount of money for a Photoshop license. I know not everyone can afford such an expensive program, so I’ve compiled a list of programs with no cost to download and use.
Keep in mind all computers are different, so not all will work for everyone. Also, I’ve only ever used Windows, so for the most part, I’m not sure if everything will work for Mac. if in doubt check the website linked.
Photoshop CS2 - (Windows, not sure about Mac.)
FireAlpaca - (Windows and Mac)
Sketchbook Copic Edition - (Windows and Mac)
GIMP - (Windows) (Mac)
Paint tool SAI [cracked] - (Windows) (Mac)
Paint tool SAI 2 beta - (tumblr post on said program)

Asperite - (Windows)
Chasys Draw IES - (Windows)
SmoothDraw - (Windows)

Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:
The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!
So if anyone’s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:
And I wanna stress that when i say “top of the leg” i’m not talking about the crotch (please don’t flag me tumblr it’s an anatomical term) i’m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:
It’s easier to see what I’m talking about in this photo of a man squatting:
So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:
But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!
HOW THE HELL DID I FIND THIS POST OMG
Licherally in the midst of drawing a guy and crying at how bad the arms are. Thanks Tumbles

New writing rule: Checkov’s friend
If you introduce a named character with a relationship to a protagonist, their character arc must be resolved in a way that feels reasonable and satisfying
Which is to say: they can’t just dissappear when they’re no longer a convenient plot device
Thor’s Mum rule – If you’re going to kill a character who’s carried any part of the plot, take a bit to reimagine the plot as if she were the main character, and the story ends when she dies. If it’s unsatisfying, rewrite either her plot points, or her death, to make both more meaningful.
Which is to say – don’t treat side characters as ammo with which to hurt your main guy. ESPECIALLY if they’re women.
I’m reblogging because this second part is the best explanation of how I distinguish between fridged characters and other characters who just die.
And yes, it is intrinsically a bit subjective and that’s okay.
kyuuley replied to your post “Loving the recent Tea Ship AU! Azula would be so pissed because a)…”
Not the mention once Ozai and Azula are eventually defeated Zuko pretty much has no choice but to be Fire Lord. “All I want is to run a tea shop that serves coffee on Sundays in by the beach,” Zuko while preparing to be crowned. “I don’t ask for much, just that one simple thing.”
Zuko takes after Iroh too much in this AU. Neither of them want to be Fire Lord but fuck, someone has to do it and that person happens to be a very grumpy Zuko
#zuko critiquing the palace staff’s tea making skills #‘i co-ran a tea shop for three years - i know how to make a decent fucking cup of tea’ #zuko bustling into the kitchen to make a round of tea even though he’s the sovereign for a third of the world #zuko teaching the palace staff how to PROPERLY make tea #iroh is. so fucking proud.
I’m envisioning Zuko having his own version of Iroh’s “this is just leaf juice!” freak out and the entire palace staff just. freezing. because they’ve lived through Ozai for so long and no one wants to be the first to find their new fire lord’s breaking point.
but Zuko just sorta sets his shoulders the way he would when Aang wasn’t getting a particular stance and just. walks the kitchen staff through the proper steps. pointedly ignoring how they freeze in fear when they first see him. because he is not his father he will not punish people for simple ignorance. not when he can just correct it. so he goes through the motions of serving with his own set next to the staff’s so he can go point by point beside them. calmly pointing out when they add too much or too little leaves. or adjusting their hands so the flame isn’t so direct on the kettle. never raising his voice or lashing out. but carefully working side by side with them together.
the kitchen staff end up being the first servants in the palace to relax around their new fire lord. because tea is important.

Every piece of technology is ultimately a stone with some magic in it
Well no. We know how it works and can reliably reproduce it. There isn’t magic inside but science.
I’m a computer scientist so I know what I’m talking about, it’s magic
@kaminaduck
We have a civilization run entirely on tiny plates of rock inscribed with runes that channel energy to do our work, manage our money, make writing and music and imagery appear at the gesture of a finger. If that’s not magic to you, you’re wrong. Just because we understand a thing does not make it less wonderous.
Top 12 alternatives to Photoshop for digital painters and illustrators
Hello there!
Yes, we haven’t done this in a while… but our inbox and chat are swamped with questions on the subject, so this article was very much needed.
it’s a simple list of art apps, but we know you love those :D
Enough with the intro, here it is, a list of twelve art apps you may want to check out.
ArtRage is an art program for beginners and professionals. With its minimal interface, it’s easy to keep the essential tools at hand without stealing space from the canvas. Panels can be moved around and tools can be customised. We all know how important it is for digital artists to be able to modify brushes!
Pros: easy to use; friendly interface; essential tools from professional apps available; available for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac
Cons: it may get sluggish with big files and when using big brushes, but performances also depend on the running machine; limited selection of editing tools if compared to Photoshop - ArtRage is more of a painting program rather than an editing one.
Paid
ArtRage Lite is a different version at a cheaper price, mostly for beginners, but also for professionals if they need the essential.
Now free, Sketchbook is the famous app created by Autodesk for various platforms.
Pros: clean, friendly interface; easy to use; professional features
Cons: lack of official tutorials; doesn’t offer as many tools as other apps (it’s down to the essential); paid subscription in Adobe style for multiple licenses
Free and paid
Black Ink is a powerful little program few actually know, but there’s a reason: this isn’t your classing drawing app. What’s cool about it is the vast selection of special brushes, completely non-realistic, and definitely able to boost your creativity.
Pros: vast selection of customisable brushes; excellent performance
Cons: not very easy to use; non-intuitive interface
Paid
This is probably the most complete software for painting, drawing and animation. It was originally known as Manga Studio, but with its updates and addition of features, it became Clip Studio Paint.
This doesn’t say much about the quality of the features themselves considering the affordable price (if you haven’t used the app yet, that is), but among graphic apps, this one is the top seller.
Pros: professional features for illustrators; layout tools for comic/manga artists; 3D reference models; customisable tools; various sales with special prices
Cons: the interface may not appear intuitive at first; the program may lag (again, performance also depends on the running machine)
Paid
GIMP is the famous open source image editor originally created for GNU/Linux and available for OS X and Windows.
Best known as Photoshop’s main competition, this is a manipulation program for both beginners and professionals who love design.
It offers many professional features, making the program a powerful tool.
Pros: professional editing tools; supports different formats; supported by different platforms; active community
Cons: in spite of the simple design, many options are hidden and it takes time to discover all the features; slow startup
Free
Krita is an open source painting app created by artists for artists.
Pros: easy to use; intuitive interface; great brush workflow; brush stabilizer; customisable brushes; general good performance; very enthusiastic, although small, community
Cons: it may be slow or even crash depending on the running computer and the app’s version; very few editing tools compared to Photoshop
Free
MediBang Paint is a free and light app for drawing and painting, perfect for manga and comic creation.
Pros: vast selection of brushes; cloud sharing; friendly, minimal interface (non-desktop app); also available for iPad, iPhone and Android
Cons: requires an account to use all features; non-intuitive interface (desktop version)
Free
Mischief is a sketching app with essential tools, useful for brainstorming and ideation.
Pros: infinite drawing canvas; friendly interface; easy to use; cheap pro version
Cons: few updates; offers only the essential (but that’s the point); no editing/adjustment tools
Free and paid
Corel’s jewel, Painter is the most famous software that offers digital tools able to give a traditional feel to brushes and canvas.
Pros: different selection of media; many professional features; PS-friendly
Cons: certain brushes may work slow; not easy to use at first; the software may crash (this is the most common report); pricey
Paid
Paintstorm Studio is a professional software for digital painting. It’s focused on the use of brushes and blending, which makes the software a little gem in the digital painting field.
Pros: good brush workflow; brush stabilizer; “close gap” feature; customisable interface and tools; professional features; affordable price
Cons: non-intuitive interface (desktop version)
Paid
Procreate is the powerful drawing app for iOS.
With the very sensitive Apple Pencil, Procreate is so easy to use that many artists chose the iPad over the most famous graphic tablets.
Pros: friendly interface; makes it easy to organise files; excellent brush workflow; customisable brushes; video recording; affordable price
Cons: hidden features; only available for iPad
Paid
SAI is a simple app for artists who want to focus on painting and drawing.
It’s well known for its good pressure support and its essential tools for manga artists, but SAI can be used by any kind of artist who wants to paint.
Pros: easy to use; friendly interface; light software; customisable brushes; tons of (non-official) tutorials
Cons: limited selection of tools, even basic ones; limited canvas sizes and uses; it might crash from intensive work, especially with big canvases and brushes; supports only RGB colour mode; lack of support
Paid
We hope you’ll find this list useful.
If you think there are other apps that should have made this list, don’t hesitate to let us know!
Thank you and peace out,
