My explanation under the cut- please correct me if I got anything wrong :)

The horse, the knight, moves in an L pattern, two down then one across in any direction; the tower, the rook, moves in a straight line (across alternating coloured tiles) as far as it wants; the queen (the one with prongs with balls on the end here) can move as far as it wants in any direction, so straight or diagonal

The order of the wording implies that black/brown is moving first here
