Movie about a depressed and rather morbid autistic man planning to commit suicide and picking up a number of odd jobs in an effort to raise enough money to meticulously plan and prepay for his funeral so his mother doesn’t have to worry about it after he is gone. He begins to connect with people and enjoy life for the first time while working part time as a greeter in the funeral home, helping an eccentric old lady organize her basement, walking 7 dogs and maintaining a feral cat colony for a guy with a broken foot, playing a number of bit parts in local ads and stocking the shelves at the convenience store at night. In the end, he has befriended many of his neighbors and he decides he does not want to die and goes back to school to become a funeral director instead.
He is popular at his funeral home gig because he keeps accidentally saying things that are very reassuring and death positive. Because he wants to die. He eventually donates his funeral fund to the old lady’s granddaughter after her sudden death so she does not have to sell her grandmother’s prized possessions to pay for her funeral.
The old lady gifts him one of her ceramic cats at the beginning of the film which he reluctantly accepts out of politeness. Near the end of the film, he adopts a friendly cat from the cat colony that looks remarkably like the ceramic cat and names it after her, signaling his commitment to surviving and caring for his cat the way the old woman lived for her ceramic collection.
whenever i look into a historical monarch who doesn’t get talked about much and is just kind of a blank spot in my understanding of the historical narrative, 95% of the time what i find is pure white hot blistering capability. a pencil pusher for the ages. a 39 year reign with no more than three hours of sleep a night. there aren’t any good stories from his reign because he systematically caught and stopped all catastrophic good stories before they could start. you shrimply must respect it
Submitter comment: I'd like to submit this '[s]tudy of defensive behavior of a venomous snake as a new approach to understand snakebite' not for it's topic (worth studying!) but for it's insane methodology, which... well, I'll just let the researcher speak for himself:
[Q: Why did you decide to do this experiment?
A: Snake behavior has been generally neglected as a field of research, especially in Brazil. And most studies don’t examine what factors make them want to bite. If you study malaria, you can research the parasite that causes the disease—but if you don’t study the mosquito that carries it, you will never solve the problem. Up until now, the popular wisdom was that the jararaca would only attack if you touched it or stepped on it. But that was not what we found.
Q: Why did you need to be the victim?
A: The best way to do this research is to put snakes and a human together. In this case, the human was me. We put the snakes inside a ring on the floor of our lab until they got used to it, then I stepped in wearing special protective boots. I stepped close to the snake and also lightly on top of it. I didn’t put my whole weight on my foot, so I did not hurt the snakes. I tested 116 animals and stepped 30 times on every animal, totaling 40,480 steps.]
From the recent (aptly named) interview: Researcher steps on deadly vipers 40,000 times to better predict snakebites
[image description: screenshot of the transcript of the interview reading as follows.
Q: Did you feel safe?
A: That is a good question! I chose the protective boot based on the opinion of experienced colleagues at Butantan. They were leather boots covered in foam that went 3 centimeters above my knees. I felt 100% safe, and the jararaca bites never punctured them. However, when I was doing simulations with a rattlesnake, one punctured the boot, and I was bitten.
Thankfully, I was in the best place I could be. The Butantan Institute is a leader in antivenom development, and I was very well-assisted at its hospital. Unfortunately, I discovered that I am allergic to both antivenom and snake toxins. I had to take a 15-day medical leave.
Q: Did you reconsider working with snakes after that?
A: No, this is my passion. I love working

Someone at an old job asked why I wanted to write up the meeting minutes for our team and I said 'i wanna control the narrative' and they were like 'what' and I pointed out that no one was gonna remember what we said in six months and so my interpretation of the meeting would dictate the assumed reality of what happened
"none of you ever send corrections when I offer the draft so y'all have consented to my version"
"we don't read that shit"
"you must trust me implicitly to create our shared reality that's so sweet"
That's how several coworkers decided I was a supervillain and how I learned several coworkers didn't understand record keeping as like a CONCEPT
What a highly specific and devastating word
deriding things as performative is anti third space
im sitting on a patio at my favorite cafe rn and im hand stitching them hem of a dress im working on. and i can see why someone would say im being performative by working on something like this in a public space. but frankly theres no element of that. i just want to work somewhere that isnt my apartment. i want to be in public, i wanna chat with strangers, i wanna see the world. it’s nice to hang out somewhere that isnt my home!
what i mean is when you say people are being performative you discourage them from doing shit they love in public. and thats no way to foster the world we want to see.

Pyydyskuolemien määrä oli jo hyvässä laskussa, mutta viime vuosina suunta on kääntynyt huonompaan suuntaan.
Saimaannorppien pyydyskuolemien määrä on rajussa nousussa. Viime vuonna pyydyksiin kuoli 11 saimaannorppaa. Tänä vuonna norppia on kuollut pyydyksiin jo 10.
Laittomissa pyydyksissä harvoin on omistajatietoja, joten poliisin on vaikea selvittää, kenelle pyydys on kuulunut. Mikäli norpan kuoleman aiheuttaneen vaarallisen pyydyksen Saimaaseen laittanut henkilö jäisi kiinni, häntä voitaisiin syyttää esimerkiksi luonnonsuojelurikoksesta, josta seuraus olisi norpan korvaaminen valtiolle. Ohjeellinen korvaushinta on tällä hetkellä 11 667 euroa.
