Curtis couch/open door policy shenanigans:

The Curtis brothers have definitely woken up to find greasers they don’t even know sleeping on their couch.

Dally and Steve sometimes wrestle or arm wrestle for who gets the couch for a night.

They both give Johnny first dibs, of course.

If Dally finds someone outside the gang sleeping on the couch when he wants it, he’ll push them off. Sometimes he comes over when he knows someone else is using the couch, just to do this. The other greaser usually doesn’t fight back (unless it’s a reflex, always a risk when you wake up a greaser, Dally has definitely gotten some bruises) because they know it’s Dally’s home turf. Some of them leave when this happens, but most of them just go back to sleep on the floor because the Curtis carpet is still better than whatever their alternative is.

Once Dally pushed someone off the couch not realizing it was Sandy - she snuck in after everyone was asleep and didn’t want to crash Soda and Pony’s shared room. Soda punched him, but only as a formality (“hey buddy, I know it was an accident, but I gotta take a swing atcha for this, ya dig?” “Yeah, yeah, I dig, just lemme put out my cigarette.” “Soda, you don’t gotta do that, I’m fine.” “Oh I know baby, don’t worry, this is just what we do”) but Dally’s real punishment was having the gang watch as he actually tried to apologize politely to a girl. That was fuckin hilarious.

Johnny, needless to say, will not fight anyone for the couch. This bugs the gang because he should really get to pull rank. Soda finally comes up with the idea of taping a picture of Johnny above the couch with gigantic scribbled arrows pointing to it and a note saying “GIVE HIM THE COWCH.” Except nobody ever sees it because usually by the time someone stumbles in to crash there for the night, it’s late and the house is dark. So this does nothing.

So Dally implements Plan B: pushing other greasers off the couch to give it to Johnny.

Once they fought a rumble against another greaser gang, and afterwards the other gang didn’t feel like going all the way back to their neighborhood, so they all crashed at the Curtis’. Between the two groups, they used up all the Curtis’ first aid supplies, not to mention all their food.

Darry always warns their couch guest that he will not be making them breakfast in the morning. He always makes them breakfast in the morning. He knows the egg preferences of way too many of the greasers in Tulsa. This may or may not be how he labels them in his head when he can’t remember their name.

One night when Steve was on the couch, he and Soda played a prank on Pony by putting him on the couch while he was asleep, while Steve used his bed. Pony was very grumpy about this when he woke up, and Soda felt badly about it so they never did it again.

They did however pull the reverse prank one time afterwards - Soda snuck onto the couch so Pony woke up to Steve sharing a bed with him instead. Somehow, that was so much worse.

Like fuck dude of course Jax is running away from her transness. From her perspective, she told her mom and that led to Jax killing her. She told Ribbit and that led to Jax killing her. If she gets close to Pomni- someone so good at breaking down her walls and figuring her out- Pomni will find out, and Jax will end up killing her. It's happened twice now, it's an inevitability in her own mind. Any time someone sees past her walls, past her mask, and finds out who and what she is, they laugh at her, and then they die. She sees her transness as dangerous- it's dangerous to the others because whenever someone finds out, they die. And it's dangerous to her because it leads to her being laughed at and mocked and bullied, no longer getting to have any kind of power, others get to hold this part of her over her head. She won't be safe, and if she is, the people she cares about (despite her best efforts to not give a shit) will die.

So just don't look at that part of you. Tape the cracked eggshell back together. Board that part of you up behind a closet door you won't acknowledge and will not open. We have a strict "no girls allowed" policy. Ignore the girl somewhere inside, suffocating to death. Shut that voice up. Never, ever let her out. Because if you let her out, either you are unsafe and bullied and harassed, or someone dies. That's what always happens. You can't be her. There is no her. She is not a part of you. Just be Jax, the cartoon rabbit. The fictional character. Keep pretending to be him and don't even think about her. You're just Jax, the funny one, nothing more, no changing it. It doesn't matter. i know theres no game there yet, im okay with that, i just want to get to it. i want the option to be there for future gameplay, i just want to know so i can explore that path in the future, see if i like it as the "narrative canon" for my Io-MC and whatnot

A. the idea of ilya being lowkey stressed about shane surprising him and potentially being exposed to allergens is so fucking funny. ilya who ends up also keeping an allergy-friendly household PURELY because it's just less stressful that way. meanwhile the motherfucker WITH the allergies is SO fucking casual about it that it wouldn't even occur to him to ask ilya to do that.

B. when they're pushing the friendship cover, ilya gets nudge nudge jokes about trying to copy what hollander's doing, and he's not going to share information shane didn't greenlight to get out, so he just plays along. and now there's like. at least three other players lowkey accidentally following an allergy diet because they don't know it's an allergy diet. why do hollander and now rozanov not eat tree nuts? unclear, but they're also the best two players in the entire industry so it's worth a shot to copy them.

C. people being so afraid of ilya's wrath if shane has an allergic reaction to something at their house is KILLING ME. shane just fucking. shane growing up who always got, "oh, you poor thing" from well-intentioned adults as a kid and then, "damn, i could NEVER live like that" from same-age peers when older whenever he had to explain his allergies, and it was both annoying and also felt like failing at something when he had to decline a piece of birthday cake or a slice of pizza because it wasn't safe for him.

but if he frames it as a performance diet, then suddenly! admiration! he gets some teasing obviously, but there's also an air of "good for you, man" that lands a lot easier than pity.

this does, unfortunately, mean that he just develops a habit of just never saying ANYTHING when not directly asked lmao.

Can we also talk about the Yuna and David of it all?

David spots them at the cottage and they go over, Shane's cottage is obviously allergen free and the shopping he did is all safe for him. Yuna and David know to cook safely, the chicken parm is all good and fine but they say "the croutons aren't safe for you, but you don't like those anyway" just in passing as a matter of habit and Ilya who JUST learned about bananas and latex and bees is like "oh wow! More allergies?? I need a list. Haha" and then they have the meal and the panic attack and they become boyfriends. Before they leave Yuna makes him a copy of her list of all the known allergens and Shane's common reactions to them, it's the first time he hugs her. He looks her in the eye and says "thank you for letting me take care of him. I will be careful."

It's a relief, to know he cares to try. But at the end of the day they JUST met this man. So they cross their fingers and try not to feel the same way they did every time Shane went to somebody's house for a birthday party or a sleepover.

And then they are over at the cottage some night and they decide to order in for dinner. Ilya takes everybody's orders and goes to the kitchen to call it in for them and it's taking *forever* so Yuna goes to see if he needs any help. She finds him sitting with two copies of the list, hers and one translated into Russian for his easy reference. He has the phone on speaker and says "thank you for checking the dressing ingredients, I know is weird request, but sometimes Caesar dressing is safe, sometimes not safe, but he likes it so much is worth checking. Yes, I'll hold again."

They've ordered from this place a dozen times, their recipe for Caesar dressing is safe, YUNA knows that, SHANE knows that, that's why he ordered it. But *Ilya* doesn't. So he's checking. Because Shane wants the dressing and Ilya want him *safe* and *happy*. And isn't that all a parent wants? For their kid to be with someone who is just as invested in their happiness and safety as they are? For somebody who will wait on hold while they check the fry oil and the dressing ingredients and whatever else?

Once Ilya has placed the order and hung up he gets surprised by a hug from behind, thin arms wrapped around him and perfume he's starting to recognize. He's bewildered, but when he asks gently "...Mrs. Hollander?" She just tells him to call her Yuna.

short form writers look at people writing 100k+ fics as though this is some sort of talent given as part of a fae bargain, that the commitment required shows some sort of ungodly mental fortitude.

Steve, who was one of the first on scene, running to beat the life out of the socs who jumped Ponyboy, breaking his nose in the process.

Steve, who wants to keep Ponyboy from trouble, as he and Sodapop do reckless things & doesn't want to bring the youngest, vulnerable, and impressionable kid with them to do something like drag racing.

Steve, who is there as soon as Ponyboy comes home.

Steve, despite breaking 3 ribs, immediately looking to the door upon Ponyboy's return.

Steve, who watched in horror as Ponyboy broke that bottle and handled a group of socs on his own because he was scared of Ponyboy, the sweetest greaser, being like him.

Steve never hated Ponyboy, he just couldn't show Ponyboy that he cared. — Steve's character is one that I hold dear, as though his anger speaks volumes his actions speak miles. And though he doesn't have a role in the movie, his role in the book allows Ponyboy to sympathize with Randy.

Sodapop and Steve's friendship is a parallel to Randy and Bob, and without that relationship in the book, Ponyboy wouldn't have related to Randy's perspective.

People glance at Steve's character and only see him as a flat dynamic, however his character has more depth and personality than that, it's just we as the reader are in the same perspective as Pony. His depiction in both the movie and musical, though playing small roles, lets us observe the dynamic between Ponyboy and Steve throughout the book, and we observe Steve genuinely caring for the others in the story in his own way.

Steve Randle cared for Ponyboy just as much as he cared for Sodapop and the rest of the Curtis gang. I would go so far to say that they behave like the typical brothers you'd expect to see.
