Like it isn’t an inspirational quote. It’s not just something you can say to mean you’re following your dreams. Manifest Destiny is a phrase created and used to mean that God gave the earth to White people and all other races exist to serve them.
Manifest Destiny was the chant that said “God says White people should rule over other races, so I’m doing what He wants”. To say that when a White person displaces or enslaves a person of a different race, they are MANIFESTING the DESTINY laid out by their God. Manifest Destiny is a philosophy and an order to others to “take what’s yours”.

For those of you who don’t know, Brazil has conscription for men once they turn 18. You have to enlist, although it’s relatively easy to get out of it. My dad was in med school when he turned 18, and he simply did not enlist. The army started sending a fuckton of letters to my grandparents’ house, and my dad simply ripped them all up and threw them in the trash. They asked him to send them a photograph so they could have him on record, and he ghosted them. When he turned 19, they started sending him even more letters. Again he ripped them all up. My grandparents were stressed and kept telling him he’d go to jail. My dad said he’d rather go to jail than the military. This was in 1986 and to this day the Brazilian military has no record of my dad at all. Eventually they just gave up and stopped contacting him.
My dad’s justification for refusing to enlist was that he was going to med school to save lives, not end them. His college friends stopped hanging out with him because they were afraid to be seen with him when the police snatched him and took him to the army. My dad told them to smoke a blunt and calm down. Because the army didn’t have a photo of him, they didn’t know what he looked like. My dad said he just wanted to become a doctor and that the army wasn’t going to help him do that. It must’ve not been very important, because it’s been 40 years and my dad is still ghosting the military.

I also want to share this because it’s important commentary - she is vocally opposed to the government and the war, she is consistently critical of the harm being done, and she’s right in this assessment. no matter what, you can’t inflame something that doesn’t already exist, that isn’t already there. this is centuries’ old, generations upon generations worth of hatred and bigotry. it has always cycled back around under various guises, and it has always come to the conclusion that Jews should be wholly eliminated. there is no excuse for it, and the reasoning for it is always the fault of those who spread and enact it, not its Jewish victims.

Hacker Impersonating Elmo Made Antisemitic X Posts - The New York Tim…
A hacker shared a string of racist and antisemitic posts from the X account of Elmo, the fuzzy red monster from “Sesame Street,” the owner and producer of the children’s show said on Sunday.
The posts, on a verified account with more than 600,000 followers, contained racial slurs, antisemitic language and commentary about President Trump and the so-called Epstein files, the remaining investigative documents of the sex-trafficking investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. The posts were removed shortly after they were published on Sunday afternoon.
“Elmo’s X account was compromised today by an unknown hacker who posted disgusting messages, including antisemitic and racist posts,” a spokeswoman for Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind “Sesame Street,” said in a brief statement. “We are working to restore full control of the account.”
Elmo, the perpetually 3-and-a-half-year-old beloved Muppet character on “Sesame Street,” often teaches his young audience life lessons like kindness and patience.
Elmo’s account had not posted any new messages as of midnight. X could not immediately be contacted for comment.
Law enforcement officials and advocacy organizations have described a recent surge in hate speech in the United States, especially antisemitism. Experts say antisemitism has risen sharply since Hamas led an attack on Israel in 2023, killing more than 1,000 people. The Israeli military has killed more than 58,000 people in Gaza since then, according to Gaza’s health ministry, in its bid to destroy the militant group.

I don't need to be convinced but I'm curious about how that last part. Do you mean like what we saw with covid, where people thought "I'll be fine, only weak people like elderly and disabled people will die" and ended up spreading covid and harming more of the population? Or is it what was added in the notes, about the harm of avoiding genetic diversity?
Basically what eugenicists want is a shallowing of genetic diversity/variability by pinning one or a very select few attributes as "positive" or "desirable" but by getting rid of diversity, you get rid of nature's natural defense against plagues or changes in the environment.
Imagine a Petri dish full of different colonies of bacteria. If you use an antibiotic, some of those colonies will probably survive and keep the population of bacteria alive (that's how you get super resident bacteria btw) but if you clone 1 strand of bacteria, to the point that every one of the organisms there is identical, even if they're the best of the best for one specific task you want them to perform, if you find an antibiotic that works for them, ALL of the bacteria will die. You NEED genetic variability to allow for adaptation, and sometimes this variability comes in the form of different skin color, neurodivergency, or other things that can be considered a disability in today's society.
For example, sickle cell anemia is a disease in which your red blood cells are shaped in the wrong way and it's very disabling, but it can also be beneficial against the most severe forms of malaria.
And it's not just for disabilities, but any trait. Dark skin? Protection against skin cancer. Light skin? Better vitamin D production with less sun exposure.
Sometimes a trait will show up and it might seem useless but if there's a shift in our environment that trait can be the key to our species's survival so it's best not to risk it by prematurely getting rid of it in our population just because it may be strange or "inconvenient" to some.

By every measure I can think of, that renders them more brittle.
Not to disagree in any way that they’re dumb or that the process to become fascist requires willful ignorance because they are and it does, but I think we ignore that people somehow find it attractive even though it makes no sense at our peril. I grew up thinking Hitler was just so smart and so mesmerizing the Germans couldn’t resist obeying his commands, but that people like that are rare and strong democracies innately repel them.
Now my nation is not only ruled by a fascist leader who has cowed or undermined both branches of government that could check him…

This ideology is somehow so compelling to a sizable enough minority that it can successfully take over governments even when its figurehead is obviously an idiot.
It behooves us to realize it doesn’t make sense, but also to understand why such blatant irrationality is that compelling to so many people.

The fact all continents except Europe has one magic school. And since I'm East Asian myself, I'll take some time to rip into the Asian School. I'm not Japanese, but if I remember correctly, the school's name is literally just "Magic School." And they all wear kimonos for their school uniform??? Do you know how long it takes to put on a proper kimono??? I don't, but it can't be practical! I don't know if she changed this, but all of Asia had to go to this particular school. Good fucking luck with language barriers. (and that's the least of their concerns considering the generations of beef between South Korea, Japan, and China alone...)

JK Rowling created one school, ONE SCHOOL, for all of East Asia. Its name literally means "Magic School" and her page claims it's pronounced "Mah-hoot-o-koh-ro." You don't have to be a mega-weeb to know that's not how you pronounce that.
The school building was also made out of white jade. But unlike European architecture, traditional Japanese architecture doesn't really involve a ton of stonework. It uses more wood. She couldn't even be bothered to do the most basic research into Japanese architecture.
Now, a quick DuckDuckGo search finds me a page that tells me that before sailor fuku were a thing, boys wore hakama to school and girls wore kimono to school. But there's also this weird detail where doing dark magic will make the kids' enchanted robes turn white, which... is the kind of creative choice you'd make from reading something that briefly mentioned that white has negative connotations in Japan because it's associated with death and mourning and not doing enough research to learn that this is because white is used at funerals because it's associated with divinity!
Then there's the detail where Japan learned Quidditch from wizards who were blown onto the island in a storm, and this is literally the "shipwrecked sailors teach island natives how to have fun" trope in a wizard hat.
Also her Sinophobia really comes through in her failure to imagine that China would not only have its own school, it would probably have multiple schools with different philosophical outlooks.
And like you mention, there are so many cultures here that have beef with each other, and so many languages. It's so obvious that Rowling doesn't actually conceive of East Asia as a place with distinct cultures and meaningful history, but has the average white person's comprehension of East Asia, which is incredibly racist.

Mahoutokoro is actually Magic Place, not Magic School — so it is even worse and lazier, really, and obviously based purely on that it sounds “fancier” to a monolingual English speaker. And then she can’t be assed to get the pronunciation right.
Pronunciation is by far the easiest aspect of learning Japanese for an English speaker. It has significantly fewer phonemes, all of which exist in standard English pronunciation too (which can’t be said of Spanish, French or German) and it is extremely consistent — each letter has one sound that’s pronounced the same way each time. That’s why it is one of the first things you learn in a Japanese class, along with the hiragana and katakana alphabets (which conveniently chart the different sound combos that are possible). This is why a lot of people who just are really into some aspect of Japanese pop culture, like anime, pick up Japanese pronunciation rules on their own without ever taking a class. I can’t underestimate how basic this is; it’s basically the next level down of basicness from knowing words for common greetings and numbers. Japanese is one of the most difficult widely-spoken languages for an English speaker to learn overall, but its pronunciation is a breeze, much easier than even our closest relatives among the other Germanic and the Romance languages (speaking as someone who also has studied a number of those too).
All that is to say that a) JKR almost certainly knows someone who has absolute baseline level understanding of Japanese, whom she could have checked this over with before putting that on her website, and b) if not, it’s easy to find how to say it by just searching “Japanese pronunciation” or the word itself on the internet.
I’ve just always thought that it speaks volumes about her that she couldn’t even do that. It shows that she's lazy. It shows that she's arrogant. It shows that she buys into some culturally imperialist ("this word MUST be pronounced the same way it would in English!") and specifically orientalist ("this Oriental language with its weiiiiird symbols must also have impossible pronunciation, so no point in trying! Just make it up!") assumptions about Japan. And the fact that she never fixed even something that simple shows how resistant she is to any sort of criticism, especially from progressives.
I've always found both the "anybody can be radicalized" and "Rowling was always a TERF and you can see it clearly from the books" really unsatisfying. She was radicalized; you can see it even if you just chart the shift in her transphobic statements over time, which used to feign some degree of concern for the "right" kind of trans people but don't bother with that at all anymore. It's easy to see how she was radicalized. But while I think everyone has potential things they could fall for, radicalization works somewhat differently for each person, because it plays on the biases, prejudices and other faults you already have if it is going to work. And it does involve some degree of agency, at least in the sense that you like what you are being sold!
I think what made Rowling ripe for TERF radicalization has more to do with the personality traits she possessed than her ideology or anything in her HP books. There are people with similar privileges and blindspots she had who've had that pointed out to them, and changed their ways, or apologized for their previous mistakes. Plenty of children's and YA fiction from the 1990s and 2000s has similar issues to the Harry Potter books, but with writers who have since grown away from that and acknowledge those issues (for instance, Tamora Pierce). What sets Rowling apart to me is that lazy incuriosity, and arrogant refusal to listen to criticism, especially when it comes from marginalized groups or people from different cultures asking her to. be a bit more sensitive about how she depicts them in her globally-popular book series. She clearly held a lot of hostility to people who had the audacity to tell her she was insufficiently progressive, who suggested that she should do anything to better educate herself about different cultures or experiences before putting them in her books.
If you know anything about the way that TERFs recruit among liberal/left-wing/feminist women, if you've ever seen it in action (I have, had them try it on me even), then it's not hard to see what about those qualities make her so ripe for radicalization. Starting with that "I can't ever be wrong about anything" is the easiest way to ensure that you will, in fact, be wrong about many, many things, because you're cutting off any chance for yourself to learn and grow and question your assumptions. Your thinking can't move forward if you refuse to acknowledge that it has anywhere to go!
Also let's not forget the time that she dropped her lore about magic in the americas, where she said that back before european discovery of the land, the native inhabitants of the American continent "had a more savage style of magic" and specialised in magics such as animagus transformations and potions, and that it wasnt until the british came and "introduced them to wands" that they were able to do actual spells.
That lore has since, of course, been pulled from Pottermore, STRONGLY revised and a more palatable version released, but i will never forget the way my jaw DROPPED when I read her claim that the natives had a "savage" type of magic until the British arrived and "introduced them to wands," thus bettering their lives and giving them access to all the branches of magic that previously had been out of their reach due to their savage ways.
Fucking astonishing. She clearly had no editors for the lore drops she was making to Pottermore, because if she had, there is no way in hell that monstrosity of a statement would ever have seen the light of day.
