Men absolutely love it when a woman is a horrible person. They can be violently misogynistic without receiving any sort of backlash because everyone thinks it’s valid when it’s not. I’ve seen men say some terribly vile things about Courtney love and Taylor Swift. They aren’t the best people, fair enough, but saying that they’re evil and that they should die? Crazy. They don’t even say that stuff about pedophiles and rapists. They get so happy when a woman does something shitty it’s like it fuels them.

Men love to use "violent" or otherwise horrible women as an excuse to be horribly misogynistic to all women. I'm big into true crime and whenever the killer or perpetrator is a female, you get tons of misogynistic comments about how all women are horrible, or that somehow, she got off light because she's a woman.

Even when a man is involved, the woman gets the brunt of it.

Let's look at perhaps the most famous True Crime case in Europe and North America, the case of Jon Benet Ramsey. Go to any comments section and just look at the comments about Patsy Ramsey. How she was a gold digger, how she hated her daughter. How she is a terrible mother. Yet none of that gets extended to John Ramsey, despite him being an equal suspect in the case.

But even if you like feminine things, what I can't understand is:

-buying products that are designed to be quickly tossed and bought again

-buying inferior products just because they are feminine

-hindering or crippling your free movement

-wasting your time

-not reaching your full potential

-not allowing yourself to chill, unwillingness to get a little dirty

-infantilizing yourself (don't mean just liking childish or cute things, I mean in the way you treat and talk to yourself, not giving yourself respect)

The majority of "feminine" things are either a waste of money, a waste of time, a waste of energy, or hinder movement, freedom, or health in some way all of which can negatively impact your skills development, opportunities, security (financial and otherwise), and self-esteem... so unfortunately I cannot think it's "cool" that some women still choose to do all that while knowing how it is a negative pressure on themselves and the signals it sends to society as a whole ("women enjoy it!", "girls should embrace it as they get older", "you as a woman will be rewarded with social capital for participating in it").

Nah, can't respect that from women who call themselves radical feminists, or feminists at all really. If you are aware of the pressures and fully understand the negative aspects of participating in and promoting this, yet continue to do it for your own personal gain and comfort, then I don't actually think it's cool of you. I think you are a coward and simp for patriarchy.

However if you recognize the pressures and are actively making decisions on how to reduce all those things while maintaining some sense of feminine self, then fine. But arguably the cage of femininity is never going to be productive or even neutral for women because it was not created to be. That's not its nature. It can't be. Femininity by design is extremely limiting for a reason.

Gender roles are prisons, not houses. You can decorate your cell with all the comfy things you like and tell yourself your cell is different than other cells because at least you recognize it is a cell, but you are all in the same prison of gender which exists primarily to keep women docile, dependent, preoccupied, and scared.

Before someone twists my words, I am not saying everyone must be "masculine" or "gender neutral" in order to be a full woman. I am saying there are plenty of ways to be a woman, even a feminine one, that does not involve buying masses of consumer products, spending 1000s of dollars on appearance every year, or wearing fashion that is made to confine and ultimately handicap us. That's just performance for a misogynistic audience and group you want acceptance into. You can still be "feminine" (if that's so goddamn important) and not wear make-up, high heels, fake nails, short skirts, uncomfortable bras and clothes that sexualize your body as an object, or not spend hours learning and doing make-up, shopping, caring about how people see you as a specific thing, or not spend all your free time and money on items to use to send some signal to the world that you are a feminine woman. And you really don't need to play that weird play-acting thing of being silly, dumb, cute, babyish, incompetent, excessively agreeable, sexy, or whatever else feminine women think they need to be in order to fit into the "femininity" mold.

It gave me the foundational knowledge to understand why I starved myself (I am a former severe anorexic; no amount of therapy helped). It gave me the words to describe the pain I felt that wasn't caused precisely by a person or a traumatic event, but rather from the social cues I picked growing up trying to understand what makes me worthy of love and good treatment (being small). Only now, after studying and digesting radical feminism for more than a year, being active on this Tumblr community for half a year, I can actually live (medications kept me alive for nearly a decade).

It is the reason I became a journalist (well, almost, as I am currently writing my master thesis), for now I must question all power dynamics. It is also the reason I finally began to prioritize myself not as a neoliberalist project, but as someone I respect and truly care about (I use to hate myself to insane degree). It also freed me from looking at myself from inner man's eyes and took away the overwhelming pressure of having to marry and produce children, thus attract and pick the right man. None of this applies to me anymore, for I am already complete as I am. I can just live, learn, and experience myself and the world in this temporary life of mine.
