As I already said, I'm KitCat, master procatsinator and moving catastrophe, nice to meet you. (Though, everybody calls me KitKat, Kit or Chocosy, which is perfectly fine as well as any other name you want to give me ;)

I'm a minor, so all the creeps please leave now. My motto in life is "live and let live", so if you're here to hurt somebody, please leave too. Thank you :).

The typical things (that I actually forgot when I first posted this): I'm a straight white European Christian girl (teenager) and therefore probably the person with the most boring background, according to Tumblr ;). Edit: so apparently there is a very high chance I may be autistic. I guess my background is not that boring after all!

I have two "adopted daughters": 1. My Killercat and tuna-demanding master Pauline 2. ";)", the bracket face (she can adapt any form of bracket face if she wants to, but the winking one is her favourite)

Some random facts about me: - my favourite colour is something between purple and dark blue - I have no clue how to write the word color/colour - I'm a German and from Germany (obviously) - I have no clue about the 'typical German culture', since my family was in Poland, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Russia for around three hundred years and only came back to Germany 30 years ago or so - I love brackets and bracket faces - I have no clue about aesthetics - I consider myself a writer - I have no clue how to continue my stories - I love cats (who would have guessed that) - I have no clue how to make an intro post - I have a stupid sense humour - I have no clue in general but I'm trying :)

Do I take Tumblr serious? No. I'm that one friend that will be hyperactive the one day and then just dissappear for the next three weeks without a word. But if you ever need me, my inbox is always open. Vent as much as you want to, I'll try to comfort you.

Random stuff: I often misunderstand stuff, so if I'm acting weird, there is a 1/3 chance that I misunderstood you, a 1/3 chance I wanted to make a silly joke and you misunderstood me, and a 1/3 chance that I'm just weird ;). I'm a "Very vibey" (@mushroomcarrotstick) person, btw. @hijabi-desi-bookworm told me once I was "literally one of the best and ~vibest~ people" she knows. Do with that whatever you want, but my name is KitCat Chaos Vibey Clueless Badass Silly for a reason. Oh and if ANYBODY tells you that I'm cute, they are liars. All lies. I'm a pure badass and never ever search after the leta vs. kitkat war. It's better to let the past behind us and move on.

Average Scarlet Hollow dev update is like: Hey everyone Tony and Abby here to let you all know that we're still working in the next chapter. The script is currently 280,000 words long (likely going to be at least 50,000 more by the next update) and the grand total is 1,500,000 words long. This is because we have to account for all the branching pathways that consider literally every little choice you make so we gotta consider what it's like for a comp-sci major living in an apartment with a cat (which they can talk to because of weird powers) that's just been cursed to be 10 years older to interact with a band of rats (which gives you a line of dialogue only maybe 0.1% of players will ever see). Abby has been hard at work drawing 86 new backgrounds and new 827 sprites (yes including the stuff for the gilf and various monster romance routes) and Brandon has made 15 new tracks of the most haunting music you've ever heard. We've been having lots of fun and hope you're all doing well with the wait!!

went to the offspring concert the other day so that was fun

also went shopping the day after and I got the greatest clothing item on the planet

also I need to stop procrastinating applying for a job

and my dad is disappointed in the lack of phone call skills that my brother and I both have (we are both very bad at keeping a conversation on the phone)

I‘ve actually never heard of Offspring but as I looked them up I actually recognized one of their most famous songs, “The Kids Aren‘t Alright” and honestly I liked the sound of it (although they probably changed over the years).

WORKING POCKETS?! IN THIS ECONOMY??

Oh you poor soul, I remember how long I procrastinated applying for even an internship, wish you all the luck (and motivation)!

My mother can‘t blame me for my bad phone skills as the only ones I have to call is either my grandmother (who talks for hours without taking a breath, so that doesn’t require any skills) or some food service haha. I guess being bad with phone calls is a generation thing, tho.

I‘m good! Started my driver‘s license and so far the theory part works well, I have 50% on the theory-app already and don’t miss any lessons due to holidays.

I also started cooking! I uh used to be quite the menace in the kitchen (with pretty much everyone shouting at me how I managed to make a salty apple cake or how I forgot to add any spice to the noodles without noticing). But now I actually made three perfectly fine meals without burning anything! My kitchen ban is over and I’m having a lot of fun trying things out! :)

In other news, I‘m 129 pages deep in a rewrite of my favorite show‘s second season and am currently ghosting my ex therapist (on advice from literally anyone who has ever heard of him lmao). And I suspect I may be autistic.

and ikr?? like I only had one other skort and it has always bugged me bc it was my mom’s originally, and when she bought it, she didn’t realize that the pocket had been sewn on upside down, so it can literally hold nothing

and yeah, I may be partially procrastinating bc of the fact that I got rejected twice for the last job I applied to (first time I applied I got “not yet” for an answer and then I applied again the next year and I got a no)

yeah i should probably start studying for my driver’s license but it would be helpful if my parents could tell me when we’re (my mom and I) going to take the test so i don’t start studying for months and forget all of it at the test

my friends keep telling me I’m probably autistic but idk and I won’t because there’s no way my parents would let me (the reason I don’t have a proper adhd diagnosis is because a) I was too good at masking as a child so they thought I was fine and b) my dad unironically doesn’t believe adhd is real )

You have a fixed date for the test? I will simply ask my driving tutor today if I can take the test soon (I've passed the simulated theory exam on the driving app ten times already). As far as I know, here in Germany there are multiple dates and when you are ready, you can take the closest one.

Sameeee but I'm getting better! I semi-regularly cook now since my mother comes home at ~3 pm and so far it has been all edible! I even made an apple cake on my own without it ending up salty or burned! So, I would recommend just trying it over and over!

Well, if you suspect you may be autistic, I can recommend the website "embrace autism". It has a collection of autism tests like the Autism Quotient and while they don't replace an official diagnosis, it could still help to recognize traits et cetera you didn't know about. And "I'm Autistic, Now What?" (I know, the name's pretty on the nose) has some nice explanation videos. I like a lot that the YouTuber included videos of herself stimming or even masking as a child/young adult. Makes it easier to visualize. However, that being said, I have a 40 pages long document full of autism tests (all of them stating there is strong evidence of me being autistic), lists of autistic traits I have, notes of childhood memories suddenly making sense and a lot of friends saying that I could be autistic and STILL constantly doubt myself. So, the confidence/self-acceptance boost doesn't always work. I hope that this helps you! And even more, I hope your parents will realize how important this is and support you :).

Dear Autistic Confessional,

Is masking a tool or a burden?

I've had it argued to me my whole childhood that masking was a skill, by my childhood doctor and parents. Deciphering tone and looking people in the eye and not making people uncomfortable with my brain was a tool for making friends. And not in the sense of "you can never be truly yourself ever", but more in the sense of "most people, realistically, are going to be uncomfortable and not want to be friends with you if you miss social cues. you'll have to learn and practice these cues with us, and it'll take longer, but it'll still happen. most people will, unfortunately, never really be comfortable with the whole you, and that's just part of autism, it's okay" and that being able to accomplish tasks with less and less support was desired.

But recently, my fellow autistics and a couple of mental health professional I spoke to told me that masking is a harmful coping mechanism that could severely damage my self esteem, mental health, and ability to process, and that seeking unmasking techniques to undo what I've been taught was the next best method of reversal. And I do value/trust them, and their opinions, but it does contradict with a lot of what I was taught.

And I have been very socially anxious, silent, and off in the corner throughout life (although ironically this is what most of the people in my life were trying to fix), though I'm unfortunately not 100% clear on details related to how my mental health was... because I kind of have a cruddy memory. So, all and all, I don't have a defined answer on how it affected me growing up, and I don't think I can accurately describe how it may affect me now due to the subconscious normality of it.

I think there should be a nice, even compromise. I mean, yeah, the methods in which I was taught to be "normal" is kinda uncouth, I probably wouldn't use it on my kids, but all in all, it did work and didn't majorly fuck me up (I think??). I think a very much watered down, sort of "these tools may help you make friends if you'd like" WITHOUT ANY PENALTIES about choosing NOT TO USE the masking tools is okay.

IDK man. I was diagnosed pretty early in life so I don't really know if I have biases or not. (Although, how early 2000s doctors correctly diagnosed an autistic AFAB early is beyond me. Lucky, I guess??). I just want to know if I should try unmasking or not, and if it's, like, inherently fucking me up, and also if I should avoid these practices with my hypothetical kids. I think I'm fine mentally, but I really don't want to accidentally traumatize any kids I have with poor methods.

I am SO SO sorry if this word vomit is uncomfortable or weird, I just really don't know exactly if masking is good or not. I'll probably keep doing it because it's what I know... but like... yeeeah.

Hi there Transgender Autistic SCP Lover (incredible moniker btw),

This is a great question, and a topic that's been hotly debated in the neurodivergent community for a long time.

Personally, I think masking can be both a tool and a burden. It can be useful in helping you communicate with neurotypical people, particularly in situations where you don't want to have to get into big explanations about why you're acting a certain way (eg, I just want to order my food and go so I will Follow the Script). At the same time, it can cause a lot of stress and anxiety and be a lot of effort, especially if you feel like you have to do it all the time and you can't allow your real self to be seen (eg, I can't let myself stim in public even though it will calm me down, so I'll just stand here getting increasingly tense until it explodes in a meltdown/shutdown).

Masking should not be forced on people. I think that's why methods like ABA are considered so harmful, because it's about forcing autistic people, usually from a young age, to act a certain way in order to be deemed 'acceptable to society', and often includes punishments if the person doesn't follow the rules. Why should it all be on autistic people to worry about not making neurotypical people uncomfortable? Have they considered they might be making us uncomfortable? We're the disabled ones!

(Side note, punishments aren't always the obvious 'if you do this, I'm taking your toy away' or getting detention. Sometimes the punishment is more subtle - ostracisation by teachers or peers, or being dismissed and told you're overreacting. That can be just as damaging, even if people don't consciously realise they're doing it.)

I think if masking is taught, it should be about choice, and it should be done in a way that doesn't suggest your neurodivergent communication style is wrong - just different. It should be explained (to people of all neurotypes) that different people have different communication styles and self-soothing methods that work for them, and how that should be respected. I also want to point out that not everyone is able to mask. For some people it's just too difficult or even painful. That needs to be respected too.

Some people talk about how being able to mask is a privilege, but I'm not sure I agree with that. I guess if it's a choice you as an autistic person can make because you find it helps you get through the day, sure. But if it's something you've been forced to do just to survive? Not sure I'd describe that as a privilege.

Unmasking can be a really freeing experience. I know that when I realised I was autistic and started unmasking, allowing myself to stim in more obvious ways made me feel calmer, reduced how easily I went into meltdown mode, and let me feel more like I could be myself. I used to feel a huge amount of anxiety over trying to fit in and be like everyone else, and although I still do sometimes, it's much less now, and I feel more able to pursue things that actually interest me. It's part of why I was able to start making comics for It's a Spectrum in the first place! One of my very first comics is about unmasking:

I do still mask in certain places, like at work or with people I don't know are 'safe'. I don't always want to explain why I'm fidgeting, and I don't want people to assume I'm being rude if I don't engage in small talk. I do what I can without doing it so much that I burn out (at least, I try), and I make sure I give myself time to unmask and stim afterwards in a place I feel safe.

If you'd like to unmask, I think it's at least worth a try. You don't have to do it all at once - you can start small, only doing it in places and around people you feel safe with. Some people might not like it, but it's impossible to please everyone anyway (a lesson I'm still trying to learn as a lifelong people pleaser), so you might as well try and do what works for you and makes you happy.
