you may be losing the idgaf war but they wouldn't even let me enlist. on account of my poet's temperament.
Literally amazing that there’s a predator that goes “mrrp” and you’re allowed to have one in your house
as a writer you will have a specific deck of vocab words you like using a lot and when you read other peoples' work you will see a very clear spread of different vocab words on their end. this is why you need to read, to collect other writers' words like it's a card game
It’s like collecting infinity stones
Could you do a story where a usurper takes the crown, and the young, barely crowned king willingly submits and gives it up to make sure his people are okay?
The king felt very small upon his throne. It felt like it had been made for bigger, older, greater people. Yet, a lot of people would die to keep him there. A lot of people had died. And more would, still. He did not know much of ruling, yet, but he knew that.
"It's okay." He was privately proud that his voice remained steady. "Stand down. Step back."
"Your Majesty-"
"-It's okay," he said again, soft, and maybe that was the power of kings and lies that they believed him. Obeyed. Despite all the instincts and training of guards and soldiers, battle-sworn and bloodied.
A path cleared between himself and the usurper.
The Commander General looked like the sort of man who fit a throne. Strong, capable, unsickly. The king had always thought so, long before he was a king. The throne would not have swallowed the Commander up as it did him. The crown surely would not have threatened to make his handsome head buckle with the weight.
The king took it off his head, holding the crown in his lap, the gold unmoved and unshaken by his slightly trembling fingers.
"I will not have my people divided by war," the king said, letting his voice carry through the room. "We have enemies enough already beyond our borders, as you surely know better than me, Commander. We do not need them inside our kingdom."
One of the Commander General's lackeys sneered, lip curling, with a jeering mutter that sounded suspiciously like "how noble."
The Commander General cut them off with one sharply raised hand. His head tilted as he surveyed the king. He devoured the gap between them with one step, two, three. If the king flinched slightly, then only the usurper was close enough to see it.
"You submit willingly?" the Commander asked.
"Didn't even have to get him to beg," another of the lackeys said. "I was looking forward to seeing him-"
"Shut up." The usurper's voice was a growl, low and vicious.
Everyone shut up.
The king looked up, and up, and up to the usurper's face. A dozen childhood memories flashed through him. He remembered the time another usurper had come for his father, and the man before him had shielded him. He'd been terrifying. He'd ripped through their enemies like a machine. The king had never felt safer.
They'd been as close then as they were now. The king had been ten years-old. He felt suddenly ten year's-old again.
That day had been the first time the king ever killed someone. The Commander had reassured him, after, when he sobbed. He had not been the Commander then.
Was the Commander remembering that memory, too? Or had it been the first thing to make him decide that the young prince was not fit to be a king, young or old? His father would not have cried. He would not have been so tender-hearted.
"I do not want my people hurt," the king said. He swallowed. Squared his shoulders. "And whether you sit here or I do, they are my people. I will do what is best for them. I will submit freely if you spare this kingdom further bloodshed, show mercy to my guards. They only want to do their duty. To protect me. I would hope you would understand that, Commander."
The king offered the crown out, and wasn't sure if that was a worse or better treachery to his late father than waiting to have it wrenched out of his hands.
The Commander didn't reach for the crown, he took the king's jaw in one rough palm. The king tensed, but vowed not to cry out if the Commander simply...crushed.
"You submit willingly?" the Commander asked again. Demanded.
"Yes."
"And if I say I'll kill them all, what will you do?" The Commander raised an eyebrow. His grip tightened, a fraction, enough to hurt. "Would you fight me yourself?" His voice lowered, intimate. "Would you kill me?"
"Yes." The king's mouth felt dry. He held the Commander's gaze. "I would kill you."
The usurper smiled, like that smile was just for the two of them, faint though it was.
"And will your people submit alongside you?" the Commander asked.
"I would tell them to. But I would not be their king, so perhaps they would not listen."
"I will spare them if they do."
"Then I will do my best to convince them, your Majesty."
The Commander's hand slipped from his jaw to his throat, not squeezing, merely holding.
The king couldn't read his expression, or imagine what he was considering. A beat passed, then another. The usurper sank to one knee and the king felt dizzy. The Commander's gaze flicked to the crown.
The king exhaled a slightly shaky breath and placed it upon the usurper's head, within reach.
The room stayed utterly silent.
The new king rose, usurper no more. He squeezed his fingers around the once-king's throat, making his breathing stutter anew. Tugged, gently, and the once-king rose too, out of the chair. They turned, in perfect synchronicity.
The new king let go and sat down.
He fit the chair, sprawling, predatory. Perfectly at ease.
The once-king stood in front of him, feeling exposed. He dared not wrench his gaze away. He did not kneel.
"No tears, this time?" the king asked.
"Not for you."
"Good boy."
The once-king hated the staggering relief the approval brought, whether it was mocking or not. He had not been king long, but he had done good. Been good. He had not failed.
The king twitched his fingers and new guards came forward, taking the once-king by his arms on either side. It kept him steady. It kept him trapped.
"Take him to the dungeon," the king said. "He will prove useful to me before we are done."
The cheering began as he was led away.
That had to be better than screams.
Writing Tips for messy Writers #3 <3
some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.
I couldn't remember the word "doorknob" ten minutes ago.
ok but the onelook thesaurus will save your life, i literally could not live without this website

REBLOGGING TO SAVE ANOTHER WRITERS LIFE
I use this every time I sit down to write. It's the best tool in the world and I would be lost without it!
Onelook, my beloved. My first and only love 🤍
why are wlw books so angsty and deep all the time like where is my casual wlw romcom or my fantasy lesbians, space bis and trans princesses like not every wlw has some lost love in some town in the middle of nowhere
I live for posts like this, because there are soooo many good f/f books out there that don’t get the attention they deserve because of the way wlw are marginalized. So!
Here are some recs for casual/feel-good f/f representation! All links are to my reviews.
Good Enough to Eat - super cute lesbian vampire rom-com
Promises, Promises - parody of LotR/D&D starring three lesbians on a quest for magical stuff
Everything Leads to You - Hollywood f/f YA about a young set designer who falls for a girl she meets under mysterious circumstances
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet - ensemble-cast “crew of a spaceship” story. Mostly just random adventures, includes a f/f couple who survive the book.
Roller Girl - contemporary f/f romance about trans woman who joins a roller derby team
Not fluffy, but the angst is SFF-stress rather than “living under homophobia/biphobia” stress:
Ascension - queer disabled ladies fighting Big Pharma in space–you wanted space bi’s, come get your space bi’s (actually, if you want more space bi’s also check out the anthology Fierce Family.)
Chameleon Moon - review is of an earlier edition and I hear the new one has even more great representation. Trans woman superhero with two female partners living in a dystopian city that’s on lockdown from the government after everyone develops mutant powers in response to a wonderdrug.
Not Your Sidekick - in the future, what happens when your parents are superheroes but you never developed powers? You intern for the baddie, of course! MC is bi and ends up in a f/f relationship, and the sequel will star her trans bestie.
Hope this helps. Feel free to browse my “lesbian books” tag for more recs (there are bi/pan girls in some of those recs, too.)
*coughalsoeverythingshiraglassmanwritescough* *coughsuperfuntimescough*
I mean, this is basically true – f/f fluff is kinda the cornerstone of my body of writing :P (Thanks!)
All I Want For Christmas by Clare Lydon - Fluffy wlw romantic comedy (I know it’s not really in season at the moment but it’s so cute)
Gay Pride and Prejudice by Kate Christie - What it says on the tin. Elizabeth Bennett is a lesbian and the haughty Caroline Bingley is the last woman she could ever be prevailed upon to love.
Escape from B-Movie Hell by M.T. McGuire - Silly British sci-fi with a lesbian protagonist
Heart Trouble by Jae - A doctor gets shocked by a defibrillator while saving a woman’s life in the ER. Now they have a soul bond!
Finding Ms Write by Jae & Jove Belle - Collection of short stories about women who love women and also love books.
The Wind City by Summer Wigmore - Urban fantasy drawing on Maori mythology. Protagonist describes herself as “at least 60% gay” and falls in love with a monster girl.
Sword of the Guardian by Merry Shannon - Bi princess and lesbian bodyguard fall in love.
The Case of the Good-for-Nothing Girlfriend by Mabel Maney - Parody detective story about a gang of five lesbians who solve crimes.
A Woman Scorned by Rachel Frank about an assassin who falls in love with a noblewoman (lesbian)
Beauty & Cruelty by Meredith Katz about the evil with falling in love with sleeping beauty (lesbian)
High & Mighty by S.S. Skye - a princess stuck in a tower who is decidely Not Amused about it (lesbian)
Humanity for Beginners by Faith Mudge - Two friends and a halfway house for lesbian werewolves (lesbian)
Hunting a Lady by Cari Z. and Caitlin Ricci - a woman who needs money goes to rescue a kidnapped lady for the reward (lesbian)
Lies & Reverie by Camilla Quinn - A shopkeeper’s daughter who loves to day dream, and the beautiful woman who runs the town (lesbian)
Love Rampage by Alex Powell - a girl in love with her best friend, and the unicorn who helps her (lesbian, trans)
Modern Serpents Talk Things Through by Jamie Brindle - a modern dragon who falls in love with the human who invades her cave (lesbian)
Prom and Other Hazards by Jamie Sullivan - super cute story about a girl, her best friend, and the prom (lesbian, bisexual)
Slaying Dragons by Sasha L. Miller - a frustrated mage, some dragons, and the lovely new partner she’s stuck with (lesbian)
The Broken Forest by Megan Derr - a Huntress, and the beautiful witch she meets dealing with a troublesome forest (lesbian, bisexual, trans)
The Mercenary by Annabelle Kitch - a peasant girl, the princess she loves, a quest to win her princess’s hand in marriage (lesbian)
The Persephone Star by Jamie Sullivan- a proper lady working in the post office, a notorious criminal set on revenge, and a bit of kidnapping (lesbian)
The Secret of Mermaid Cove by Megan Derr - an improper lady, an unwanted engagement, and an island full of secrets
Witch, Cat, and Cobb by J.K. Pendragon - a princess fleeing an arranged marriage, a witch, and a cat (lesbian, trans)
Zombies in the East End by Roxanne Dent - steampunk, zombies, and two tough ladies
California Skies by Kalya Bashe - bandits in the wild west, a hunt for jewels, stubborn people (bisexual, genderqueer)
Green Toes by Avery Flanders - gardens, a hint of magic shoes, and people falling in love (bisexual, genderqueer)
Gossamer Axe by Gael Baudin. It’s been a while since I’ve read it, but it’s fantasy. Basically one of the most epic quests to save a lover I’ve read, more enjoyable because it’s based on music and the magic thereof. It’s not in print, so it can be a little hard to get a hold of, but worth it.
in 2026 DO NOT ask yourself whether your art is GOOD
instead ask:
is it SINCERE
was it CATHARTIC
was it FUN TO MAKE
is it MADE BY ME
and don't forget to stay silly
Harassment Spam Bot Alert!
Date posted: November 12, 2025
AO3 has recently seen a rise in guest spambot comments making false accusations about work creators or other users. For example, they may claim that a particular user is discriminating against minorities, trying to hide the fact that they use AI, or are at risk of having their works stolen or deleted.
These comments often copy existing AO3 usernames in order to make their accusations seem more legitimate. They may also try to lure people onto other platforms (similar to the art commission scam), or use fake links that actually lead to pornographic images.
As always, we recommend that you do not click on any suspicious links or give your contact information to scammers. Instead, simply mark the comments as spam or report them so that the Policy & Abuse committee can remove comments left by these spambots.
