knitting pattern frustration: patterns that don't specify waist measurement for people whose tummies are significantly bigger than their chests. also sizes that are clearly just the smaller sizes with a few extra stitches that don't actually think about how it would look and fit on anyone with more than a 32" chest

Things I learned (so many):

For the sake of your sanity DO NOT DO NOT start with a square shawl. You want triangular or rectangular. Square shawls are extremely hard to match up the center motifs row count with the border row count so that your top corners turn correctly.

Speaking of, a true sign of an expert orenburg knitter is how well the border corners are turned and the tiny gaps closed up.

Borders aren’t actually called borders but rather “teeth”

Shetland knitters (those heathens was implied lololol) are the ones that invented the purl stitch so that they could make smooth (sexy) stockings for the rich english warlords, and this is why true Orenburg is only ever in garter stitch. [I couldn’t tell if she was pulling our leg on this one, she had a VERY Russian delivery to everything]

Also this separation of styles is why Orenburg shawls don’t ever use center balanced decreases, only right leanings.

Apparently there are multiple old news articles that claim Orenburg women were so poor they made their knitting needles out of bicycle spokes. This is in fact a translation error, and not true, because in russian “knitting needle” and “bicycle spoke” share a word. All the translators were men who didn’t know the specific regional and craft specific vocabulary. (this one I 100% believe)

Orenburg shawls used to have tassels instead of Shetland style, scalloped, borders but the soviet union decided that the scallops were better as the standard for the cottage industry and they sent dudes over posing as sailors on break to steal the patterns from the islanders.

Orenburg knitting was in fact a managed cottage industry during the Soviet Union and her mentors job was as the government representative responsible for maintaining quality, supply and style consistency among all the villages.

Jeny’s interlock cast off exactly mirrors the long-tail (and the backward loop) cast on AND is a very good stretchy bind off.

This baby sweater is knit bottom up, but I made the sleeves top down, picking up stitches around the armhole, so to get the same edge on the ribbing, I did the long-tail cast on on the body and the interlock cast off on the sleeves.

Tatreez (Arabic: تطريز) is a type of traditional Palestinian embroidery. Tatreez uses traditional cross-stitch embroidery and is practiced largely among women. The craft was originally practiced in rural areas of Palestine, but is now common across the Palestinian diaspora. Historically, each village in Palestine had their own tatreez patterns. The landscape was a major source of inspiration for the patterns and motifs, which speaks to the variation in style that was common to see among all of the different tatreez expressions that were particular to each Palestinian village.

After the violent displacement and dispossession of Palestinians in 1948, people were living together in refugee camps. The different styles of tatreez became less distinct and have continued to evolve with the diaspora. Following 1948, tatreez evolved to reflect the experiences of Palestinians. Palestinian women began to incorporate the Palestinian flag and its colors into their tatreez as a means of resistance to the occupation of Palestine. Consequently, tatreez became an expression of the identity, heritage and resistance of Palestinian women and their dedication to preserve their ancient culture.

Update 3: Why did I have to try single thread for the disc. Why. How did I ever think that was a good idea. This is taking aaaages.

I'd say never again, but I know myself too well...

Still trying to decide whether to outline the landmass with darker thread or not. It would make the lands more distinct - but it might also make it look more like a comic. If you have any thoughts on it, let me know. I'll only decide once I've finished the rest of the disc and that'll be at least a week, if I had to guess.

My estimate is that this took about 150 hours. About half of that went into the disc because I discovered single thread embroidery.

I hate to say this, bud, but @arkodian I think the single thread on the disc really paid off. Gives a huge sense of scale that the Disc is so much more "detailed".

Knitting backwards

This is so convenient for bobbles, entrelac and short rows. It’s one of my favourite techniques, because I don’t have to break the flow of my knitting to turn back and forth 🧶

so Pacific Knit Company sells what they call 'doodle' deck, which are full or half decks of cards with knitting patterns on them. Every motif is 24 stitches wide, and a variable amount of stitches tall. The cardstock is comparable to playing cards.

You can shuffle the cards to get a randomized pattern, you can pick out the patterns you think would make a neat hat or scarf (or socks or sweaters, if you're willing to do a bit more work), you can mix-and-match the decks.

And each deck comes with three cards of instructions, including how to make a single-sided cowl and an infinity cowl using the cards.

It's smaller and in some ways simpler than a lot of my recent pieces, but this was a fun, pretty sampler to work on. Blackwork embroidery on 16-count Aida cloth.

yall know that post with all of those absolutely stunning crochet flowers? well i just bought a pattern from the shop those are from and Good Fucking Lord.

I was expecting a like a Chart or two, maybe some written instructions. not Seventy Seven full color pages for One type of rose.

this was like 8 bucks???? obviously i did some redacting but Good Lord. if you are even a little bit into crochet go throw money at this absolute Mad woman its Definitely worth it.

back at it almost an entire year later. and i can now confirm she's this insane in all of her patterns (there's over 84 of them????) (<compliment)

she has also made a website since the first post (link) the patterns are cheaper there and the payment is handled through PayPal (and I'm guessing she gets a Way bigger cut of the money than with her Etsy so maybe check out the site instead) of the Etsy listed above.

also quick faq below the cut bc idk, supporting small businesses ran by WOC is important and this lady is rad. I just genuinely love her products and want more people to know about them.

The patterns are full color and come with charts, full color pictures, and standard written instructions with a key in the back and tutorials for all non standard stitches and techniques.

They aren't actually that difficult. I crochet very rarely (and mostly do amigurumi) bc of wrist issues and still had a really easy time working through them bc like, the techniques aren't basic but if you don't already know them you will know them after doing the pattern. A lot of the difficulty comes from using a very fine thread, but you can also just use normal yarn to have giant beautiful flowers instead of life size ones (i personally prefer a size 10 instead of the recommend size 40 bc it's easier on my wrists) Also here's a link to her shop where she sells the thread. it's an Etsy link bc i don't think she has a non Etsy site for physical products yet.

the patterns are All Really Really Cheap. that rose pattern i called 8$ is only 7usd on her site. the most expensive items i can find are 12$ and they're both bundles. One with 9 mini patterns the other with 16. you are getting a fucking Deal no matter which you buy by my estimate.

she has everything from like a million types of rose and from amaryllises to zinnias and she's making more patterns.

slip all but the last two sts of the dec pwise, p2tog, then pass each of the slipped sts over the p2tog and off the needle one at a time.

it's a little slow, but like, it's possible. i don't think a p15tog could reasonably be completed in one step lol
