Wild theory I'm throwing out here but the machine and the parts cause insanity right? And are also known for breaking reality?
What if the machine created the first zanies? Gaining awareness beyond their perceived reality and resulting in insanity?
"But Amish is the first zany" Amish also worked on the parts, was he zany before that? Or did he become zany as time went on? Or because we know based off the Labyrinth and the Instument, along with zanies ability to jump around, is it possible that because Amish was destined to make the parts, lead him to being born as the first zany?
And sure not everyone is in contact with the parts, but it's implied if you're raised around them you're likely to be zany as well. Zany is a mindset. Maybe that's why the characters can't question them too much [asides canonically Tap making them ignore it], because they'll go insane, or zany. Felix isn't zany anymore but mentions how there's just gaps in his memory because of it, he no longer remembers the fourth wall and he avoids questioning it
What if zaniness is in a way a hysteria caused by what people learned from the ink machine? From breaking their reality?
"if Jax is a trans woman she's still an abuser so she's bad representation so the show is transphobic" you're an idiot. you want your blorbos to be perfect ideal angels, I want my blorbos to be realistic, nuanced, flawed human beings, we are not the same. I LIKE that she's messy and fucked up and problematic, I think it's a realistic depiction of how a lot of repressed and traumatized trans women are. I think the show goes to great lengths to explore how and why she is the way she is, and to evoke sympathy for this kind of person. it doesn't excuse her actions but it does make them understandable. and I think the fact women like that deserve sympathy is an idea worth stating and worth shouting. yes she's a bully and she hurt everyone around her and that may never change. she still deserves sympathy.
they're still terming random transfems as i type this i see which does make quite a statement doing this today specifically
watched three girls who reblogged its new blog mutual aidpost (made literally 15 minutes ago) already disappear from its notifs. transfems are not included in their pride :/
QUITE the statement to be nuking transfems at the current accelerated pace right at the start of pride month like this, isn't it

I've been thinking about Inky Mystery for the past few days instead of doing anything productive, and I've come to a realisation that made me feel like I was having an Albert Einstein moment before I actually thought about it for a second.
All of the Questers, with two exceptions, have been portrayed in a way that could simplified into "evil" if we really think about it. Cuphead and Mugman being the main antagonists for a good portion of the early chapters, even if unwillingly, Holly with the Cog (and later as Mayhem, if you wanna count them as the same person), Boris during the latter half of the Labyrinth, and Bendy when he loses it and tries to genuinely eviscerate Leticia. Now, you may notice a repeating pattern here. None of these instances are WILLFUL antagonism, and not all of them can even be counted as "evil" unless we use a very stupid definition for the word. There are two exceptions among the Questers, those being Alice and Felix. I WOULD count Felix trying to slime the Cupbros out, but, one, that would ruin my already loose point, and, more importantly, the scene is framed in a way where the Cupbros are the antagonists for not revealing the truth or even supposedly commiting the act in the first place, and it's made clear that Felix is having some kind of violent breakdown, rightfully so.
Now, what am I getting at? What do the words Baja Blast and Pie have in common? They're both ingredients in the Baja Blast Pie.
To be honest, this is where my Einstein moment ended. I really can't draw any conclusions from this observation. It could be an omen, but I doubt it'll be something as repetitively silly as that, even if I do kind of think having unknowingly and comically evil versions of each Quester would be so ridiculous it circles right back to being amazing. Alice and Felix are both such lovely characters, I could hardly imagine them being "evil" unless it was full on possession or another Cog situation where the magical item messes their brain chemistry up. Personally, I also think these pseudo-antagonism moments benefit the characters most. For Holly and Boris specifically, I didn't hate them beforehand, but I only really ADORED them after the fact. It gives so much room for development, especially with Holly where we literally see into her mind, I LOVED that part. I could also say that it's a reflection of the characters' morals and resolve. Again, none of them really do it under normal circumstances, most of them not even willingly. And Alice and Felix are arguably portrayed as the "resposible ones" who KNOW what their limits are, so it makes sense for them to be left out of the Evil Quintet.
Okay, I’m curious. What do the rest of you think? Because I have some thoughts but I want to hold off for a second.
Okay, back to this because it’s now been a second so I’ll share. Also some spoilers.
One of the biggest themes in IM is that it’s a black and white world that at first seems to justify white and black thinking. That on the surface there are good guys and there are bad guys and that the good guys should always win and the bad guys should always be punished.
And we show over and over again that that kind of thinking is only damaging to everyone. Those it is implied about and those implying it. That every character has their own motivations and reasonings. Still done in a way that there ARE bad guys but it’s harder to know who really is a villain here. The heroes have their failings. None of them are perfect. They are all horribly flawed and can make mistakes. Ones with big consequences. And villains that if you sit and think, are they really so villainous? They’re doing bad things sure, but so have the heroes.
IM is full of shades of gray. It’s meant to make you think. It also causations against generalizing a whole group as bad. Demons, angels, dishes, micco, witches, wolves, rabbits, unicorns, and so on.
Cup and Mugs should be in the position of heroes but due to poor choices are forced to be antagonists and when they are trying to turn around, it’s not that easy.
Boris is a kid thrown into very real dangers and expected to keep it together like an adult. He had an easy way to ‘fix’ everything offered to him. To make it perfect and make all the bad and the pain and uncertain fear go away. What kid wouldn’t reach for that?
Holly is tempted and she didn’t even realize she was. It’s an easy small mistake that leads to a whole city wide ordeal so very quickly.
Bendy is constantly expected the worst of because of what he is. He has to prove who he really is again and again and again. And under the worst stress, maybe he just wants to give into what people have told him. Just a little. See what kind of monster they’re all so afraid of. But that also threatens everything he wants to be and what is he supposed to do when his own magic and body are out of his hands like going Beastly? Others fear of you is one thing but being afraid of yourself is another.
And that leaves Felix and Alice. You’re right, they don’t have an evil phase. Angels are the guardians of the world. The goodest good guys you could ask for. Except this isn’t a black and white world of thinking and the harder you look the more cracks you see. The angels are infallible and Alice has learned this. The angels and herself are prone to make mistakes just as terrible as anyone else. We have yet to see what she does with this knowledge.
Then there’s Felix. I’ll be honest, he doesn’t really need an evil phase. That’s not where his story is headed. His demons are different (ha. Sorry Bendy). The difference between the person the public thinks he is and who he thinks he is. The person his friends and family claim him to be and who he claims to be. The pressure to be the oh so wonderful, wonderful cat! He already walked from fame once and now he has a new fame. The lime light love him. But does it allow him to be a person with his own faults? Can he be forgiven if he wants to live his life his way? It sounds simple when it’s about anybody but a star? A public figure? Don’t they OWE the masses that gave them their fame and wealth? Shouldn’t they be held to a higher standard? And if not, doesn’t that make him a bad selfish person? These are a couple of themes that will be coming up.
We haven’t really gotten far into Felix’s story yet but look out for these and other twists and turns we have planned. I’m excited for Felix and Alice’s stories taking center stage. And thanks for talking about the evils of the other questers. It was fun to ramble!

“Alice- you were fine just a moment ago. Why are you suddenly freaking out now!?” The angel snapped her head to him, her face a red mess full of fury and embarrassment. “I was fine because I thought I’d be flirting with a guy! I can’t flirt with a girl! Especially not a pretty one!” Cuphead sighed while Alice continued to throw her tantrum. “It’s still the same old Bendy…” he mumbled. “AND SHE’S BEAUTIFUL!!” Alice cried, falling to her knees in despair.
I can not believe- I thought you would be responsible! You’re so young, and now you’re going to have a baby!? Whose is it anyway!? Was it the blonde one!? I said that guy was nothing but trouble! -” Boris stood at the doorway confused. "What's going on?” He whispered. "Oh, Felix found out our cat got pregnant and is now lecturing her.” The man in question continued to rip into their poor cat that sat there silently with her head down. "D'aw, poor Milo.” Bendy nodded sympathetically. “It’ll be a mess when I tell him I’m also pregnant.” It was Boris’s turn to nod sympathetically. “…Wait- what the cuss!?”
“Oh cuss- mom help!” Demitasse gasped. He said it! He called her mom! Her baby boy called her mom! Her baby- who is currently getting dragged to his death. “I’m coming! I’m coming!”
“-no homo.” Cuphead stopped for a second, almost losing the flow of the song, before looking at Felix bewildered. "Felix, you are homo.” The older man rolled his eyes, not stopping their dance. “Not for you, I'm not.”

Since I've been working on that MD post, listening to my sad little liminal tunes as one does while drawing, I thought about what/how much N means to Uzi, and what it means to Be Someone.
What does it mean to be an individual. Sapient and with traits. What even are traits, how can one define their self. Through stereotypes? Through such superficial things as what we like, how we dress?
Uzi likes her hot topic stuff. She presents herself as a goth through clothes, and she seems to associate this with an edgy sort of personality. But that's such a damn mask. We can see it right in the first episode - *this* bitey angry girl is a shield, because goddamnit if she doesn't have it drawn then that's just asking to be hurt, isn't it?
She *is* angry deep down, at injustice, but she's also a confused distraught kid with nobody to lean on. No place, no one to find safety in - no home despite having a place to lie her head down.
And then N shows up and he's hurt too, but doesn't have it in him to successfully mask who he really is (boy's shit at lying + too nice). His inherent vulnerability to the world that stings him over and over again with others, unintentionally peels off Uzi's mask.
And who is she without it?
She's a reassuring gentle smile. Worried searching eyes. A goofy jokester. A little bit shy, flustered, giddy mess. She's a kind, loving, listening idiot that's ready to throw herself into hell for someone dear to her.
She is all this normally. Buried deep as a survival tactic. (And she is so damn strong too, because despite being a kind person deep in there, she doesn't allow anyone to break her.) But she finally could experience herself free thanks to someone finally being genuine and warm, giving her the invintation to find a home in him. Through her interactions with her home, N, we get to slowly meet the true Uzi Doorman.
We are defined by reactions and reactions within relationships, and he was a key for both us and her.
I feel that a lot of people miss this in Uzi's characterization. Yeah she's the bitey, angry and spiteful little menace at times...
But they forget that at her core, she's actually kind.
She had every right to leave N dying at the doors after J stabbed him. For all she knew this was the guy that killed her mom. The reason her dad neglected her for all these years. Hell, he's the reason her dad left her just a few minutes ago.
But she stayed.
She saw the wounded and hurt boy who was just doing as he was programmed to, who had the wool pulled over his eyes and got a reality check in the worst way possible by someone he looked up to. She looked at him, saw herself...and she wasn't sure if she liked that or not. So she took the higher road (while still passing it off as a 'fiiiine I'll help...but only because we'll be even then'.) and helped him.
There's far too many stories and comics and other things out there with her being this absolutely horrible person to N...to everyone. Because "well, she's an angry and bitey teenager so she gets to be horrible!" but that's not the truth like, at all.
Yeah, she's got a bit of a god complex...but when she realizes she f*cked up, she goes to fix what she's done. Which is a lot more to say about her than some other people I know...
This teenage girl had the world turn its back on her. So she threw up walls to keep herself and that little spark of hope she still had kindled, that hope of someone caring about her and treating her like she mattered. That she wasn't something to throw away...like she'd been treated most of her life. I know this is rich coming from me since I'm one of Khan's greatest defenders but like...yeah, he f*cked up. Intentionally or unintentionally, there's no skirting around that. He neglected her...whether that was out of grief from losing Nori and being unable to look at Uzi due to their similarities or devotion to protect his and Nori's Greatest Work it doesn't matter. (though he gets better at trying to make it up to his baby girl, I'll fight people on that bite me.)
And then. And THEN. Here comes this golden retriever wolf boy. Who shattered every barrier just because he is who he is. Who gently hopped over the walls she threw up and sat next to her to tend that little spark of hope until it became a blaze. A blaze that eventually was strong enough to stand up against the devil itself.
Then the camp happened and she just...broke. Everything went upside down again. She was losing control of her body, gaining new powers she didn't understand...hell there was flesh growing out of her when there really should not be!! She was scared and hurting and confused so she lashed tf out. Which was kinda natural.
Her fear wasn't that N was going to think she was a monster. Her fear was that he, this source of light in her world that had been so dark for so long...was going to abandon her. Like everyone else in her life, her mom...her dad...her classmates...everyone had done to her before. And that scared her more than anything.
Uzi's a very complex character. People just look surface level and see "Oh god a scene kid with god complex and god powers ew." But that's just who she is. She's soft where no one can see, but hard and sharp edges that refuse to be sanded down everywhere else.
Because she had to learn to be that way.
And that actually breaks my heart a little bit.
