...You know what, I’ve been trying to motivate myself to go and study, and this is just what I needed.
On the other hand, I have questions
writing a cover letter is just like: here is my worksona she has no mental illnesses and hates breaks! i would like to larp her for 40 hours a week with full pay and benefits
if ur disabled or chronically ill u know that the tv trope of “doctors will stop at nothing to learn more about a patient’s extremely rare symptoms and find answers” is a crock of shit. all doctors know is gaslight disabled people, ignore ur pain, tell u to exercise, and do the same test 10 times
I’ve had eczema since I popped out(literally) and the only thing the doctors did for the first 20 years of my life was mock me for having scales and tell me not to eat dairy.
I’m nearly 25 and it wasn’t until last month that I learned eczema has been defined as an autoimmune disease for the last 5 years, on tumblr.
Shows about doctors where they’re determined to find out what’s wrong with their patients are propaganda in a similar way to how cop shows are propaganda. They both exist to tell you to trust in a system that often either doesn’t care if you’re harmed or actively means to harm you. Both types of shows convince people not to question or self-advocate.
…holy shit
I knew about copaganda but I NEVER thought about docaganda.
God bless nurses forever
Throckmorton
Your cousin Throckmorton, the skateboarder.
Apparently this is a running gag in math textbooks
Oh, no, my friend, @aceyuurikatsuki . It’s not just that. It is so much more. Settle down and let your friendly neighborhood x-ray tech explain you a thing.
Throckmorton’s Sign, otherwise known as Throckmorton’s Principle, does in fact have to do with dicks. Because it is fairly normal for a dick to show up on a hip or pelvis x-ray. But the thing about Throckmorton’s Sign is, it’s not just that the dick is visible. It is a legitimate diagnostic tool.
Let me explain: let’s say a person equipped with a penis is in a car accident and has right leg and right side hip/pelvic pain. Their doctor will order x-rays. Unfortunately, sometimes fractures are so small that they can be missed, or, because the patient is in such bad shape and the images obtained aren’t the best quality, the radiologist can’t be sure for one reason or another if what they’re seeing is actually a fracture.
So what do they do? They look for the dick.
You heard me correctly. The dick.
Throckmorton’s Sign is when “the penis points to the area of pain.” So if the above-mentioned AMAB patient’s xray aren’t displaying a clear, obvious fracture, but their dick is pointing to the right side, 9 times out of 10, the injury or fracture is on the right hip or leg area, so then the radiologist will focus on that side while reading.
Now I know what my non-radiology followers are thinking. “Ace, this sounds like bullshit. This can’t be true. You’re lying through your teeth.” But I swear to you, it is 100% accurate. I have seen a positive Throckmorton’s Sign multiple times with my own eyes over the course of the past 7 years. Ask any x-ray tech, and they will probably agree with me.
Your dick is good for at least one thing, and that thing is helping a radiologist diagnose your upper femur, hip, or pelvic fracture.
This had been a PSA.
holy fucking shit
Your cousin, Dick Pain Compass
My current employer once said to me, “I get the impression you work to live, not live to work.” Uh, yeah motherfucker.
me after reading this:
A boss once sat me down and said, I swear to fuck, that it was a bad thing that I was interested in leaving work on time. Like he said something like “I’m told that you like going home at the end of the day.”
I asked him what I meant. Like I point blank said “Are you saying I don’t work enough overtime?”
“…no,” he said, since we got in trouble if we worked OT. It was treated as a moral failing on our parts.
“So are you saying I should be working for free?” I asked. This is a trap question. It was a corporate job. Which meant he actually was limited in the shit he could pull.
“….no,” he grudgingly replied.
“So what is the problem?” I asked. And he had to admit that, technically, I had done nothing wrong.
But he tried to guilt me over LIKING TO GO HOME AT THE END OF THE DAY. After each 8-10 hour shift where I was allowed ZERO breaks, despite the law requiring I get a minimum of 15 minutes every 4 hours.
He also got pissed off that I was very open with telling people I had given my notice. I didn’t bad mouth the place. I wasn’t negative. I was just open that, yes, I was moving and had therefor quit.
GEE I FUCKING WONDER WHY I WAS SO EXCITED TO BE LEAVING.
Anyone who’s foolish enough to tell me that working is a privilege I should “live” for ought to be drawn and quartered.
I’m dead serious; people are dropping dead like flies because of overwork.
This is why we NEED labor laws, people.
This is why we NEED labour unions and organized labour.
Better see y'all reblogging this
This user wears their mask over their nose and sealed properly!
We should probably also use this as a time to destigmatize staying home when you’re sick instead of muscling through and making everybody else sick…
Like legit, can we have mask culture? Other cultures have it, I want it, it’s great.
This year I have legit been so much more healthy! I usually get a cold at least once a month. This year I discovered that half of that was hay fever and the other half has disappeared. It’s great. I am going to be that mask-wearing person in future who shakes hands with you and then sanitizes their hands immediately after.
doctoring while fat
@firebirdscratches
Yup. And what’s even more insidious is that mysterious symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, upset stomach, things like that - ALWAYS get explained away as “it’s because you’re fat.” Whereas if a thin person goes in and says that, they’re more likely to be taken seriously. Fat people literally can’t get a diagnosis without joining weight watchers first to “prove” it’s not just because we’re fat. So if two women have cancer, and feel fatigued, and one of them is thin and the other is fat…one gets pointed to a diagnosis faster, while the other one gets told to go on a diet. The delay of a few months, hell, a few weeks, can be all the difference. And fat people have their symptoms ignored for yeeeeeaaars. Fatphobia and bias in the medical community claims lives.
As someone who is fat and who also works in the medical field, here is my recommendation:
Tell the doctor you still want to follow up with further diagnostics. If/when the doctor denies these diagnostics and tests, tell them you want it noted in your chart that they denied the patient’s request for further testing.
That will usually get further medical tests and treatments.
:)
^^^^^ Yes this ^^^^^
The fun part for me is when I tell them I’m eating healthily and exercising and then get called a liar because I haven’t lost any weight.
An activate charcoal AND grapefruit smoothie called "what will your meds do ;)"
Actually its a juice
Wait no this was a joke
you're on antidepressants and you drink this you meet the devil
Ok I just want to say activated charcoal is really good for you. Especially if you have an upset stomach. Take it, and it'll absorb all the toxins in your stomach and make you feel better.
Natural remedies are good. They do work. And we shouldn't make fun of them.
You know how they give activated charcoal to dogs and cats if they get into your meds or drink coolant or anything else toxic? That’s because it binds with meds and carries them out of your system without them interacting with your body.
If you’re on meds and drink this bullshit you’re not on your meds today, champ. You may as well have flushed them down the toilet. So kiss goodbye to your blood pressure meds/antidepressants/anything else you’re on and if you’re on the pill I hope you’re ready to be a mom.
Among its other charming traits, activated charcoal can prevent your body from digesting food and absorbing nutrients and oh yeah side effects can include “diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, and blockage of the digestive tract.” (Source)
But ya know, “really good for you.” 🙄
This is gonna be a very unpopular opinion but I don't care
Activated charcoal is a medication, not a food additive, and should not be taken if you're not sick. It absorbs toxins, as well as other chemicals in your stomach. And by toxins I mean actual toxic stuff when you accidentally poison yourself. Not the mysterious "toxins" you get rid of when you "detox". "Detox" is bullshit. You detox by having a working liver. If you're alive and not currently dying of liver failure, odds are you liver is working and therefore you don't need to detox and eat activated charcoal when you're not having food poisoning.
You wouldn't just make yourself an ibuprofen latte, so stop putting activated charcoal in everything.
“You wouldn't just make yourself an ibuprofen latte, so stop putting activated charcoal in everything.”
Just in case someone missed it
Also incredibly important
Also, on the off chance the activated charcoal doesn’t immediately suck everything out of your body, grapefruit is literally the (second) worst possible thing you can eat or drink when you’re on medication, as it interacts with a LOT of them, and you should always double check- https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/grapefruit-juice-and-some-drugs-dont-mix
thinking about my optometrist who was treating my eye infection and said “if it hurts, you can rinse your eye with boiled water. look at me - look at me. i want you to understand that i mean water that has been boiled and has since cooled down. not boiling water. do you understand?” like i’m so grateful for this man ensuring that I wouldn’t destroy my eyes by pouring boiling water in it, because it is an adequate assessment of my intelligence
14th century doctors be like “i don’t know what’s wrong with you but you’re a woman so i diagnose you with witchcraft”
19th century doctors be like “i don’t know what’s wrong with you but you’re a woman so i diagnose you with hysteria”
21st century doctors be like “i don’t know what’s wrong with you but you’re a woman so i don’t believe anything is wrong with you and won’t diagnose you”
That’s not entirely fair. Sometimes they also diagnose you as “fat.”
fresh, clean no-terf version for reblogs!
Your mom and aunts aren’t on tumblr. Please warn them about this as well.
You mom and aunts -might- be on tumblr (yes, hi, that’s me)… but tell them anyway. Not just them, but your friends. All of them. Even the people who show disgust at the topic may end up in a relationship with a post-menopausal person, and it could save their life.
Just wanted to add for trans masc folks on T.
If you haven’t had a period for over a year, you count as post menopausal.
Since we don’t know if T increases your risk for certain cancers, if you still have your cervix, make sure you get your pap smear every three years and check in with your doctor if you get bleeding.
Anyway, as we enter cold & flu season in the YEAR of corona, this will come in very handy.
This was created by Vox and if you look at small print, you'll find the sources used to create the table.
Obviously there are exceptions and we're getting conflicting and new information about covid-19 all the time but by mid-august, I believe we certainly had observed enough cases for experts to put this together at least.
2020 is a weird year
