Funny ADHD testing/diagnostic story.
When I got tested for ADHD last year, one of the ātestsā was this challenge with color words on a page, but the ink never matched.
For example, āblueā would be written in red, āorangeā in green. First I had to read the words. Easy. Then I had to ignore the word and say only the ink color. Impossible. My brain refused to see the word āBlueā and say āred.ā
So naturally, I found a work around.
I held the paper as far away as I could and squinted, like one of those 90s Magic Eye books. If I blurred the text enough, I couldnāt actually read it. Problem solved!
The doctor blinked at me, baffled. āWhat are you doing?ā
So I told him, āTricking my brain. If I canāt read the word, I can just see the color.ā
There was a long pause, then he said, āYeah⦠donāt do that.ā
We had to redo the test. Afterwards, he explained: āIām trying to see if you have ADHD. If you keep finding workarounds, Iām not actually measuring ADHD.ā
And that, guys, gals, and NB pals, is how I made it to my late 30s without a diagnosis: Iāve been hacking my way through life.
I have a whole laundry list of tricks that would sound unhinged to anyone else, but theyāre just how my brain survives. I canāt just āremember things.ā I canāt just āleave on time.ā I procrastinate for months until one magical morning my brain decides, today weāre doing the thing.
So yeah, I absolutely do have ADHD.
Iāve just had decades of practice adapting to it. But adaptation isnāt the same as ease. Just because I can do something doesnāt mean it isnāt hard.
People donāt always take that seriously. Because itās in the brain, not on the outside. Itās no different than wearing glasses: being able to read with them doesnāt mean your vision is fine without them.
Just because thereās a work around or a hack, doesnāt mean the problem isnāt there.
Going to the doctor's this month and I'm thinking about finally asking her about getting tested for adhd ( and autism if I'm brave enough to ask for that ). I'm terrified of bringing it up tho bc anytime someone asks me why I think I might have adhd idk what to say. I know why but for some reason I panic and can't explain it when the time comes. It's terrifying.
I finally have an appointment for my evaluation for autism and ADHD!!!
If I get at least one of the diagnoses I can request a higher ādegree of disabilityā and can finally get officially recognised as āseverely disabledā
Yesterday I got officially diagnosed with ADHD!
I got a psychological evaluation on January 2nd, and finally had my feedback meeting yesterday.
Obviously, like most neurological disorders, itās a spectrum, and I have a more mild version of the combined (inattentive + hyperactive) type.
It was just so nice to finally get the validation that I really do have it. Now we start the very long process of trying to get accommodations and maybe medication. Weāll see.
Part of the evaluation was also an IQ test, and it turns out I have an IQ of 122, so thatās kinda cool.
I'm getting tested for adhd in a bit!!
I FINALLY HAVE AN ADHD DIAGNOSTIC APPOINTMENT AND ITS THIS MONTH!
And bestie lemme tell you, it's taken literal years. I referred myself to the clinic in April 2022, got the first phone call appointment December 2022. Then had the QB test in February 2023 (my clinic use it when they don't have testimonies from others about childhood). And finally, January 2025, I'm having the screening!
Just spent nearly 5 hours at the doctor's office for my ADHD screening. After all the testing stuff with the doctor was done, they put me in a room by myself and sat me down to complete like 7 questionnaires. (With one of them being THREE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-EIGHT FUCKING QUESTIONS LONG.)
What a borderline torturous thing to put someone through when they are trying to get screened for ADHD of all things.
Anyways, I definitely sat down and did it all with zero interruptions. Didn't scroll Tumblr or send anyone any messages while I did it...
