Ajax Petropolous x fem!reader
Momentary announcement no. 1: I just binge watched all four new episodes of Wednesday, and I can’t be the only one who noticed Ajax has gotten even hotter this season.
Also, the hearbreak?! People who think our gorgon boy deserves better, let’s gather!
*THE STORY CONTAINS SPOILERS OF WEDNESDAY SEASON TWO*
Synopsis: Ajax has yet to realize the only thing more complicated than his relationship with Enid is his connection to his best friend.
*OR; ->two teenagers who have a thing for each other, being the only ones unaware of it (not for long tho :3)
->reader possesses the ability to just ,,knock out” all living things according to her will, sending them into unconsciousness
->playful banter, bit of angst, mostly fluff and flirting though and a little handsiness in the end ( I’ll write smut too if you guys want it :33 )
->it may be a bit long, but I promise it’s worth reading till the end
——
Sipping your coffee you got from the small brink at Nevermore, you sat at one of the far away tables of the gardens by yourself.
Two minutes. Ajax should’ve been here much longer ago than that, but those two minutes are the plus ones you started counting after including his usual delays.
Now he’s starting to make a record.
You took another sip of your coffee.
Since your arrival to Nevermore last year, you harnessed your abilities enough so that your powers didn’t budge even when you were nervous, but now might just be the time to find that gorgon and knock some sense into his stone hard head.
Three minutes.
Ever since Enid broke up with him, or in fact she managed to ghost him without a word, Ajax wasn’t the same.
Initially you quite liked the flimsy, popular werewolf girl, but this whole show she pulled on a guy like him of all people, was really unnecessary. Maybe it was Wednesday’s effect on her, saving the school or whatever, you wouldn’t know.
You liked to keep quietly to yourself, but your friend (although now you were sincerely starting to ponder whether he should be addressed by that title anymore ) clearly thought his newly acquired RA status was enough of an excuse to waste your time. Or convince himself he’s actually doing something instead of thinking about Enid.
Plot twist, it wasn’t. At least definitely not in the first case.
Checking on the watch tied to your wrist, you acknowledged that four minutes had gone by, and that your coffee had run cold. In addition, you became bored enough to decide to take matters into your own hands.
So, instead of waiting a second more, you headed towards the boys’ quarters, taking a guess on which floor you’d find your forgetful and heartbroken lab partner. To your credit, you did find him almost instantly, standing in the doorway of Cannibal hall with a list in his hands.
He was, seemingly, in the middle of giving out orders for the newcomers.
-You guys got any questions?
-Oh yeah, can you stone me with your snakes?-one of the two boys, who looked eerily like Wednesday shot back with an excited gleam.
Ajax shook his head, like someone who’s got all the time on his hands. Oh yes, he’d definitely forgotten about the appointment.
-Nah. Sorry buddy, that won’t be happening.
-Are you and Enid still together, or has she finally come to her senses?-the other guy, who you vaguely remembered was attacked by the Hyde last year, added snarkily.
Men. One near death experience, and he already thinks he’s hung the moon in the sky. They wouldn’t last a minute in childbirth, or periods.
-Oh look, someone’s gotten tough over the summer-you interrupted, drawing attention to yourself as you crossed your arms, leaning against the doorframe-Are you interested in that because you’ve finally gotten a girlfriend, or just trying to grow some balls, huh bee guy?
Ajax whipped his head around with a surprised face, and the mini Wednesday guy smiled at you in awe.
Eugene just blushed ( nope, the balls are clearly yet to grow ) , and you repressed the urge to laugh at him. Ignoring the pair, you turned to your friend instead.
-Hi-Ajax dipped his head, his features pulling into an apologetic frown-god. Forgot our appointment, didn’t I?
-You wasted four minutes of my time. After the usual quarter hour-you quipped back, casting a grin in his way-and you owe me a coffee. The other one got cold while I waited for you to..-looking around you merely acknowledged the two newbies, still gawking at you-do what? Give an interview about your relationship problems? Your audience is getting questionable.
-Well, the show’s over anyway-Ajax sighed, putting a hand to your back as he gently escorted you out of the quite intimidated boys’ quarters.
-I’ll be back. Don’t cause any trouble okay?
-We won’t-Eugene muttered in immediate surrender, the tip of his ears still a little red-duhh, that one’s just like Wednesday…
-Only because you were getting snarky with the wrong person, bee guy-you quipped back over your shoulder, flashing a grin at him-don’t waste my time, and we might just become friends this year.
Once you were already on the corridors, Ajax heaved out a sigh, glancing amusedly at you. -That was a sight. Remind me to bring you along the next time I see that sucker around Enid.
-Next time, don’t be this late, or I might just have to knock you out instead-you retorted, huffing a little-that’ll at least get some sense into you.
Ajax quirked a brow. -Am I really the one who lost their mind when she keeps ignoring me? I feel like a creep just trying to get her attention, when it’s not even supposed to be awkward. Like, she’s my girlfriend dammit!
Oh yeah. A girlfriend who ghosted him, and found another guy since. Way to keep up that gorgon thick-headedness.
-I’m not even gonna get into that-you murmured, with an annoyed sigh-when you’re done whining, can we finally get to the point please? That project’s due tomorrow, and I’m not about to fuck up my resume just because you’ve gotten your heart broken.
-Oh yeah, sorry. I’m just gonna go and get you a coffee, shall I?-he sighed, raising his hands in truce-meet me in my room in five? I heard Xavier’s not gonna be back this year so we’ll have the place to ourselves.
-Fine-you crossed your arms, giving him one last meaningful look-but if you’re late again, I swear I’ll smash some of that funky sweet treat stuff you love. Permanently.
-I won’t be, I promise-he grinned, already on his way towards the coffee stands.
——
Half an hour later, you had already finished with most of the project, and drank your newly acquired coffee, when Ajax’s mind has drifted back, yet again, to a certain pink haired werewolf.
-Do you think she still wants to make things up? Or like, at all?
You raised your head from your textbook, giving him a meaningful look. -If she did, she wouldn’t be hanging around that wolf guy all day, would she?
Ajax sighed. -You’re right. I know, it’s just.. did I do something wrong? I keep thinking about how I should’ve reached out more often over the summer, but I thought she just wanted some space after.. you know, wolfing out and all.
-Why are you even asking me? I’m not the girlfriend-you snorted, finally setting down the textbook: he didn’t seem like he’d drop the subject any time soon.
-Yeah, but you’re a girl-he retorted, as if that was supposed to explain everything-You guys tend to just.. know stuff. Do you get what I mean?
You didn’t want to roll your eyes at him, but there was little else you could do. Of course you did. But what’s the point of trying to convince someone when he hasn’t decided he wants to believe yet?
-Look Ajax-you said softly, leaning a little closer so he’d see you’re taking him seriously-I think you’ve done nothing wrong. You’re a fine guy, and if you didn’t waste my time so much I’d even say you were perfectly boyfriend material. But.. people change, and if Enid’s made up her mind about moving on, no amount of convincing from you will change that. And that’s me saying it, based on what I’ve seen of the two of you.
Ajax was only listening to half of the monologue though, as he tilted his head, giving you a teasing smile. -Wait wait wait, hold up. Did you just say I’m fine?
God, what’s gotten into this man and asking questions? -Duh, that’s absolutely not the point!-you mumbled irritatedly, but to no avail.
Ajax still had that lopsided grin plastered on his face like glue, and he seemed intent on acting as if he didn’t hear your last sentence. -Oh but you did. And you’re blushing now.
-Am not-you replied grumpily, but your features failed you miserably, and you both knew it. What’s even gotten into you today?!
-You are-he insisted, leaning a little closer-I should get you embarrassed more often. It’s definitely a nice change compared to how you’re roasting me all the time.
-For the love of god, just shut up now, would you?-you groaned, hanging your head back mostly to hide your crimson colored cheeks-and remind never to try giving you a pep talk again.
-Why? You’re cute when you look at me like that-he chuckled, and, upon seeing your wide eyed stare he just shrugged-relax, I’m just messing with you. A little flirting’s never destroyed a friendship, has it?
You would’ve disagreed with that statement on multiple levels, but you decided to just shut up instead.
You didn’t like the way your heart starting jumping all around the place after seeing him smile at you like that, neither the sudden flood of thoughts you’ve tucked away carefully after the first time you met him.
Yes, you thought he was fine, so what? He has a girlfriend, and you’re friends now anyways. There’s absolutely no reason to get yourself involved in an already messy relationship drama, that’s for sure.
-As I was saying-you cleared your throat, glaring when he tried to open his mouth to protest-if you’re really so invested in this, why don’t you try to talk to her? The worst thing that can happen is you finally put an end to this whole mess.
-Yeah. Or I could get my heart broken all over again-he mumbled to himself ironically-Definitely no pressure there.
—-
Two days later, you were in the middle of looking for a sweater to wear for the bonfire night when you heard a swift knock at your door. -Who is it?-you shouted back, but your voice was a little muzzled because of the pile of clothes you were currently leaning into.
-Go ahead and guess-a familiar voice shot back, clearly grinning.
Finally rising from the array of clothes, you adjusted your top a little, meeting with the all too excited face of Ajax. -What’s gotten you so worked up today?-you shot back, crossing your arms with a small smile-wolfgirl decided to talk to you in the end?
-Not yet, but she may will after I showed her these-he explained, holding up two painfully pink stuffed toys-look. Which one do you think I should give her?
-What even.. where on earth did you get these?-you quirked a brow, ignoring his question. You tried your best not to be too judgmental, but he just grinned at your frowning face.
-Stop being so judgy, and help me out-he raised his hand as if to toss a fly in the air-pink or purple?
-You know none of those are my favorite colors-you rolled your eyes-Or kinds of toys. Hence, I may not be the best to judge your already fragile courting experiment.
What even is she gonna do with those? Suffocate Wednesday?
-Yes, I’m aware. Your favorite color’s green, and if I wanted to surprise you I’d have brought you coffee-he mumbled as if reciting facts, as he motioned slightly towards the entrance-Which I will give you, but only after you help me choose.
Your eyes immediately lit up in unmasked surprise. -Ajax! I hope you know that’s called manipulation. And I don’t like to be manipulated.
-Yet it still works, doesn’t it?-he shrugged, giving you a charming smile, and well.. All you did was shake your head in disbelief, because yes, it worked.
-Fine, but you have to help me choose a sweater to wear afterwards-you nodded, inviting him in as you groaned in annoyance-I can’t get my head around this whole bonfire thingy.
——
By the end of the next week, you had run out of any civilized opinion of Ajax’s hoard of gifts, none of which have proven successful.
On the contrary, his tries to win the long lost girl back were becoming sadder and sadder until one time, he showed up at your door in the middle of the night.
You were already in bed, alone for once since your roommate was spending the night at her boyfriend’s, when you heard the soft knock on the door.
At first you didn’t want to answer, hoping the intruder would just leave you comfortably alone, but after the fifth persistent knock, you groggily slumped to the door, only to find a dark, and quite messy form of Ajax staring back at you.
And oh god. He was crying too. -Jax..-you muttered, your eyes wide in surprise-Did something happen? What are you doing here?
The gorgon quickly wiped his eyes, sniffing a little as he answered but his voice still sounded hoarse when he spoke. -Hey. I know it’s late but.. can I maybe come in?
-Oh-you froze for exactly one moment before you realized you should hive him an answer-yeah, of course.
Standing aside, you let him strode in. He went straight for the bed, lowering himself on your sheets as you closed the door, and ( after a little pondering ) moved to sit next to him.
For a while, none of you said anything. The silence had started to become agonizing after a few minutes though, and your curiosity won the war against your manners.
-Is it something with Enid?-although the sentence itself wasn’t really a question, you did have to start getting this out of him somehow.
Ajax gulped before answering. -Yeah. She broke up with me.
-But..-you shook your head, trying to phrase a question that somehow wouldn’t hurt him too much-How? Did she even tell you why?
-She said it was..-Ajax chuckled dryly, shaking his head as he stared at the floor in front of him-that it was inevitable we’d grow apart in the end. That I was in love with the old version of her, and she didn’t want to be that anymore.
-No shit sherlock, but couldn’t she at least tell you that before going to find another guy?-you quirked a brow in disbelief.
-I tried to tell her the same thing-Ajax nodded sadly-and you know what she said? That she ,,didn’t expect things to heat up with Bruno so fast.”-you gasped and he chuckled again, but most of it was unmasked self dismay-i know. They were probably hooking up while I was showering her with gifts, like a fucking hopeless idiot.
He was hopeless idiot in love, but that, in this context seemed unnecessary to point out.
You just couldn’t quite believe your ears. How is that the same Enid who was so keen on being friends with Wednesday, of all people, last year? That relationship doesn’t take up too much of her effort, but uttering out a few words to Ajax does? That sounded fucking mental.
-I’m sorry-you mumbled after a while-If I knew she’d.. well, handle things this way, I wouldn’t have advised you to talk to her.
-Oh shut up, you’d have pushed me into one way or another of pursuing her, just because you got tired of hearing my rambling-he muttered, smirking at you meaningfully, and you chuckled.
-While that might be true, I never intended for you to get hurt-you pointed out, glancing into his big, sad brown orbs, and you added in honest earnestness-I hope you know that.
He quipped his lips, nodding swiftly, but he still looked so heartbroken it nearly pierced your own heart.
He might just need all month, if not all the year, getting over this whole thing.
-Come here-you whispered, reaching your arms out towards him-no girl deserves to get you so worked up, even if it’s someone as memorable as Enid Sinclair. You’re much better than that, Ajax.
He chuckled, once again, but his shoulders seemed a little less tense this time, and he immediately leaned closer. -Is it alright if I just..-he mumbled, glancing at your legs that dangled a little uncomfortably around you, as you turned so that could hug him.
You nodded a little hesitantly, but you couldn’t escape your nervousness as he lifted you nonchalantly by the waist, so that now, you lay in his lap, your thighs comfortably placed on top of his own, his arms curling around your waist tightly as he nuzzled himself deep into your shoulder.
He sighed, seemingly at ease immediately.
You, on the other hand, had quite a hard time relaxing. While one part of your mind tried your best to convince yourself that ,,This is normal, this is normal, this is normal..” the other, and bigger part, kept setting all the fire alarms off.
You’ve never been like this with him before, and you had no idea what would happen if you started doing it now.
-Ajax.. -you bit your lower lip, trying furiously not to blush at your unusually close predicament-Not that I’m uncomfortable or anything but.. don’t you think this is a little equivocal?
The gorgon snorted unapologetically into your shoulder, and you didn’t know why you got goosebumps all over your neck. -Equivocal?-he muttered, giving you one of his signature teasing grins that washed away a little bit of the sadness from his features-when did you decide to convert into a walking talking peace of archaic dictionary?
You glared at him. -Hey! Take it down a notch, gorgon boy, or I’m going to freeze that impossible mind of yours.
He laughed out loud this time, as he leaned back a little to inspect you better with, to your dismay, absolutely no amount of fear. -Relax, I’m not trying to do anything. We’re friends remember?
-Do you know any friends who spend their time entangled like.. that?-you shot back, glancing at his hands that still lay warmly on your waist.
-Oh no no no no-he tilted his head, as a knowing grin crossed his features-if I actually wanted to fumble that pretty head of yours up, I’d start by something like this.
All of a sudden, he gripped your waist again, adjusting you in his lap so you sat facing him, his thighs in the middle of your own.
You shrieked, swatting him in the back of his head, as you tried, and failed miserably, to get an ounce of your composed self back. -Ajax!
He looked at you as if he was trying to prove a point, and he did not move his hands at all. -See? That’s just the starters, and we’re not even into kissing yet.
-Yet?-you whispered, the voice almost dying away in your throat.
Ajax glanced at you deeply, before leaning closer with slight curiosity. -You’re venting-he stated, as if it wasn’t the obvious-why?
-Why?-you repeated, the tone somehow nearing in hysterical-you’re acting like this out of nowhere, and you’re asking me why I’m venting??
-No, I’m asking you why would you ever think I’d force anything between us, when you’re perfectly aware I’d never hurt you on purpose-he retorted in a calm voice.
Fuck it. You had the urge to groan all of a sudden, because he did have a point there. But that didn’t explain why your heart still kept jumping around like crazy… -Well I…-you gulped, shaking your head as if that would help matters-why are we still like this?!
Does he sincerely expect you to form a coherent thought when he’s smirking at you like that?
-Because.. -he retorted, pushing a small strand of hair behind your ears and you froze in an instant, your lips parting just slightly-if you actually wanted me to let you go I’d be lying knocked out on the ground.
-You’ve just got your heart broken, I wouldn’t do something like that!-you protested, but your voice was weak, and the both of you noticed it.
-I know-he whispered slowly-but I also know you’d never agree to anything you thought was not up to your standards. Not even on your deathbed.
You huffed, rolling your eyes but you couldn’t escape him. -Well I’ve agreed to be your friend, and look where that has gotten me.
Ajax chuckled at your obvious dismay, and finally decided to place you back on the bed next to him. Thank god. -All jokes aside-he said, his tone becoming all serious-I know you don’t exactly let anyone sleep over here, and not that I want to make this a habit but.. could I maybe stay over tonight?
You tilted your head, and gulped slowly.
He wants to sleep.. with you. In this bed. Definitely no pressure after his previous fucking experiment, or whatever.
-I may need a little more convincing after the act you just pulled-you retorted, crossing your arms as you looked up at him.
Ajax sighed, putting his hands up in surrender. -I’m sorry okay, I just..-he suddenly bit the end of the sentence away, but you did not miss how his eyes flickered back to you for a second-I promise I won’t do anything inappropriate, not that I was intending to before, but.. I’m not sure I wouldn’t accidentally stone someone if I went back to our dorms.
Knowing his past, he did have a point there, so all you could do was nod, pointing at the plush space next to you. -Alright, you big crybaby. Come on then.
A few minutes later you both lay tucked in under your soft sheets, the only audible thing in the darkness your slow, soft breaths.
-Ajax?-you whispered suddenly, a question clouding your mind. -Hmm?? -Can your snakes stone in darkness?
He chuckled softly, and you felt him turning towards you. -Why, are you afraid you’d wake up as a statue in the morning?
-Would you just stop villainizing all of my sentences for once?!-you shushed him, turning back to flip on the small light on your bedside table.
Ajax blinked at you a few times, trying to adjust his vision as you turned back towards him. -Please don’t tell me we have to argue again-he muttered, and his voice suddenly sounded so broken you forgot all your other roasting intentions.
-What? No-you smiled gently at him as you adjusted the sheets a little so they wouldn’t bulk up between the two of you-I just wanted to say I..
Ajax quirked a brow in curiosity, and you bit your lower lip. -Yeah? You what?
-I could knock out your snakes for you, if you want. You know, just for the night-at first, this seemed like a reasonable offer but when you saw his wide eyed stare, you became a little flustered-I just thought you’d be more comfortable, that’s all.
Ajax took a second to realize your reaction, and he quickly shook his head as if to snap back to reality. -No, no, it’s not that it’s just.. no one has ever offered to do that for me before.
-Well I don’t know anyone else who would be able to handle your snakes, so.. -you shrugged, grinning a little-there goes your reasoning.
He smiled, and you couldn’t help but notice how his usual confidence faded a little at the mention of his powers. -I.. I’m not sure. What if something happens? If I accidentally stoned you, you wouldn’t wake up for another five ours, and I.. I’m not sure what I’d do with myself with all that time on my hands.
-Relax, nothing’s going to happen to me-you shrugged, smiling a little as you realized you repeated his words from before.
Ajax still didn’t look too convinced though, so, in a sudden spurt of bravery, you took one of his hands into yours, looking deep in his eyes. -Hey-you whispered-I trust you, Ajax. You wouldn’t do something like that.
-But I..-he gulped, hanging his head a little-I could hurt you. What if I hurt you? I couldn’t live with myself and I..
-Shh-you took his other hand as well, inching a little closer-that’s just your demons speaking. And you wouldn’t be able to permanently stone me anyway. It’s going to be fine, I promise. Just breathe with me.
-Alright-he sighed, still a bit hesitant. -In-you draw a deep breath, lifting his hands up with yours for effect, and he went along with you-and out. Now again.
Ajax closed his eyes, as he did the exercise with you, and you did so yourself. When you felt him actually relax a little, you opened your eyes, whispering softly so you wouldn’t scare him.
-Now. Take off your cap please-he tried to protest, but you interrupted with a gentle smile-and don’t panic. I’ve seen you stone people before. I’ve got about two seconds before the snakes actually take effect.
He mumbled something inaudible, but lifted his fingers to the hem of his cap nonetheless. -I’m going to count to three-he said tightly; and you nodded-one.
You took another deep breath, feeling your power humming at the back of your head as you focused all your attention on him.
-Two.
You suddenly remembered this is the first time you’d try your powers on each other, and decided to tuck the memory away for later.
-Three.
In a swift motion, Ajax lifted his cap, and there it was: about fifty, miniature grey snakes staring right back at you.
You took a moment to notice how fascinating they looked before snapping your fingers. -Go to sleep-you whispered, feeling your eyes change color, and in an instant, the small, cold blooded creatures did as they were told.
One by one, they flushed down, lying on top of each other in a deep, undisturbed slumber.
You grinned, snapping your hands together in a victorious grin, and you looked back at Ajax who was staring at you like you hung the moon in the sky. -That was.. fucking amazing! -he muttered, the excitement palpably rolling off of him-gosh, you can’t believe how nice it is to finally be alone in my head! And how did you even.. did you know all along you could do that?
-I just took a guess. And, it was my pleasure-you smirked proudly, taking a moment to admire his features now, that you could see all of them for yourself-you look..
-Scary? Yeah I know-Ajax chuckled self consciously-the snakes are a sight.
-No, incredible. I love snakes-you muttered, glancing all over him and you didn’t notice the dumbstruck smile that took over his features-I’m sorry, I’ll stop fangirling.
-Well.. thanks I guess-he mumbled, returning your smile-your eyes look beautiful when you’re conjuring, you know. Not that they don’t otherwise, but… the purple suits you.
-Stop being so sweet gorgon boy-you chuckled swiftly, giving him one last smile before you turned the lights off- I might start to remember how easy it is to like you.
——
The next morning, you woke up to a soft gush of the wind, and realized three things: one, that Ajax was still soundly asleep next to you along with his snakes, two, that he had an arm around your waist, and three, that your roommate had come back, and now was standing frozen in the doorway.
Oh so that’s where the wind was coming from.
-Hi-you mouthed, waving at her as if that would finally convince her to come in.
-WHAT. THE. FUCK?!-she signed back, gawking at the snakes on Ajax’s head ( or Ajax in general )-what’s he doing here?? And why doesn’t he have a cap on???
-Just come in for God’s sake Lilith, would you?-you groaned, quickly gesturing back. Your brown haired Da Vinci friend rolled her eyes, but she did so with quite careful steps, soundlessly closing the door behind herself.
-I want an explanation!-she signaled once she finally arrived to your bed, grinning when he noticed the guy’s arm lying around your waist-someone’s gotten busy last night, I see.
-Fuck off, I told you we’re friends-you sighed, smiling at her ( still signaling )-and relax, I knocked his snakes out. He’s harmless, unless you wake him up.
She gave you an ,,are you really expecting me to believe that?” look, before backing away a few steps. -Not intending to do that. I’ll just grab a few things, that’s why I came anyway. You two have fun.
-We’re still not really going to.. -And don’t think you’ve escaped a story time just because you’ve got a gorgon to threaten me with!-she added, pointing a finger at you, as she started wooing a few of her things into her bag, levitating them in the air.
-Never thought I did-you rolled your eyes, glancing back towards the sleeping form of Ajax, his snakes splayed around his head and for once, it surprised you that he really didn’t look as out of place next to you as you imagined.
—-
You didn’t really talk much of that night afterwards, at least not with Ajax, who, after the definite ending of his relationship slowly entered into a healing phase ( if mentioning Enid once instead of twice every couple hour could be called an advancement. )
Keeping his promise, he didn’t try and sneak into your dorm after that again, either, but he did flirt more than he used to, which you gruesomely added to the side effects of getting him back on track in your mental list.
-So I was wondering, since the Spring Gala’s coming up-he started one day, as the two of you were walking in the gardens to class-did you think about who you’d go with??
-I thought about not going, since I have no taste for flashy displays of pretense friendships-you grinned snarkily-and it’s not like somebody’s gonna ask me anyway.
-You know, you sound just like Wednesday sometimes-he snickered, looking over you-and anyways, since when are you so sure about that last part?
-Based off of last year?-you quirked a brow as if he didn’t know-when normies decided to gaslight the whole school and my date was in on the whole thing? Ring a bell?
The whole reason you and Enid bonded in the first place was because both of your dates stood you up for the sake of some shitty prank.
Back then, Ajax comforted the both of you: he asked Enid on an actual date, and kept an eye on you until all the fuckers were sure to leave you alone. The two of you became only closer ever since.
You tried not to think about how, by now, somewhere deep down you just wished Ajax would ask you on a date instead.
-Are you seriously asking me whether I remember how we became friends?-he retorted sarcastically-just because some normie fucker messed with you last year, doesn’t mean I’m gonna let anyone do it this once.
-Ohh playing protective, are we?-you teased, smiling a little-and what is your great plan for finding me a date if you wouldn’t let anybody near me?
-It’s simple-he shrugged, although you noticed how he fiddled with his hands a little which he only did when he was nervous-I thought, since I need to keep an eye on you anyway, and I’d like actual company instead of second time trying to make Enid jealous, we could… maybe go together.
You gawked up at him in actual surprise this time. -What?
Ajax sighed. -Look, I know I promised not to try anything and I will keep up to it. But I can’t pretend I’m absolutely over Enid when I’m not, and.. my mind doesn’t drift off as much when I’m around you.
-That is a really clever way of saying you just need me to make your ex jealous-you rolled your eyes, chuckling to mask off the little pang of hurt in your chest.
It’s not like you didn’t know he was doing it already, but it sometimes still caught you off guard.
-I’m sorry, did you not hear the compliment in there?-he gasped theatrically-I also said I’m really grateful that you’re here for me.
-Really? With which words exactly?-you teased, mimicking his deep voice-,,Uu I’m thinking about Enid”, ,,Enid’s so beautiful”, ,,Do you think Enid still thinks about me?”…
-Would you shut up?-Ajax glared, grinning in a sudden flare as he snatched your wrists together, pinning them against the wall on both sides of your head.
You gasped in shock, all the voice died away in your throat, as stared up at him, trying to break the sudden contact. -What has gotten into you?
-Oh I’m sorry, I thought we were making each other uncomfortable-he spat back, still grinning with a little darkness in his orbs that he had there ever since the breakup.
How wonderful that he decided to use seducing as his new way of roasting you.
-Great, you made your point-you huffed, rolling your eyes, and you tried your best not to seem affected by the close predicament-can you let go of me now?
-I don’t know, should I?-Ajax retorted, leaning down so you were level-I don’t remember you apologizing for any of those insults.
-Did you ever apologize for using me as bait in your ,,let’s get Enid back?” experiment?-you retorted, tilting your head a little-because I don’t remember that either.
-Nice comeback-he grinned, the warmness of his voice still fawning all over your face-I want to hear yours first though.
You shook your head in confusion. -Why?
-Because it would top my experiment of trying to make you uncomfortable-he smiled, clearly proud of himself.
Duh, he’s got too much pride on him now. This gorgon needs to be humbled.
-Fine. You asked for it-you grinned cheekily, hanging your head back as you reached for your power, and when you whispered the next words, your voice had gotten an eerie tone to it-go to sleep, pretty boy.
Ajax’s eyes widened for an exact second before he gasped, trying to hide from your gaze. -Wait, no!
All you did was laugh as the next moment, he lost consciousness, his body tumbling forward and you had to gain all your strength not to let him fall. -Man you’re one heavy guy-you muttered, looking around for some help.
Luckily, you found just the perfect victim for your deeds. -Yo, bee boy! Yeah, you over there!
Eugene whipped his head around, his eyes widening in horror when he saw you waving excitedly at him. On his side, Pugsley beamed excitedly at the passed out form of the guy in your arms.
-What did you do to him?-he asked, quirking a brow. -Only what he deserved-you quipped back, still smiling-take him back to your dorms, for me, would you? And make sure he doesn’t accidentally stone anyone when he wakes up. The aftereffects tend to make people.. -you glanced over at Eugene, snapping your finger for effect-weary sometimes.
-Yeah yeah, we will-he nodded a little quickly-Pugsley come on. Give me a hand. -On it!
-Thanks boys!-you grinned charmingly-I owe you one. -Just don’t use your power on us, okay?-the bee guy said over his shoulder.
You laughed, but did not give him an answer. The poor guy could stay frightened a little longer, or he wouldn’t learn his lesson.
——
On the night of the same day, a frantic knock interrupted your peaceful night’s read. You supposed who it was already, but luckily, Lilith was at her boyfriend’s again so you didn’t have to worry about finding a presentable excuse for another visit from Ajax.
-Y/N! I know you’re in there!-the gorgon’s voice sounded a little muffled over the door-let me in!
You waited for another minute before gracefully striding to the door and opening in, only to find a quite aggravated form of Ajax on the other side.
-Oh heyy gorgon boy-you smirked lazily up at him-how was your beauty sleep?
Ajax stepped in, not even waiting for an invitation as he closed the door behind himself. -I can’t believe you just knocked me out like that!
-Why, were you expecting me to keep playing your little game?-you quirked a brow, crossing your arms-I told you Jax, I don’t like being manipulated.
-Yeah, and I don’t like getting charmed into some delirious thing you call sleep. This is way worse than getting stoned, like ever!
-So people keep telling me..-you hummed, pretending to get lost in thought as you sat back comfortably on your bed.
Ajax on the other hand still looked quite perplexed, and maybe even a little upset as he stood glued a few steps away from you, and crossed his arms.
You just tilted your head a little in confusion. -What?
-I thought we were going to talk-he muttered-you never even gave me an answer.
-And you’re seriously surprised? -That you knocked me out? No, I deserved that.
You smiled a little, standing up as you stepped closer to make the headspace a little less awkward. -Then what is it? I haven’t seen you so upset since.. a while.
More precisely, the time of the breakup, but you didn’t feel like bringing that up.
-Did you make me have those dreams?-he retorted, seeming to finally blurt out what has been lurking at the back of his mind.
You just stared at him in mere shock. -Dreams? What dreams?
-The ones I had during the sleep. They were.. i don’t even want to talk about it.
What?? -Ajax I don’t make people do anything. That’s the first time somebody’s mentioned them anyway.
-Oh really?-he asked sarcastically-so where did they come from then?
-The only things accompanying you during the sleep are the ones already on your mind. The magic just.. helps stuff come to the surface I guess-upon seeing his flat, disbelieving face you perked up in curiosity-why? What did you see?
-Doesn’t matter-he shrugged, but his face was suspiciously full of emotions despite the casualty of the gesture-I just.. I have to go.
Now that was unexpected. -Wait, what? I thought you were waiting for an answer.
-Don’t worry about it-he smirked a little, but it was nothing compared to his usual form of banter-I’m not about to press it, and land myself in that mess again. One time was more than enough.
-Oh.. okay. Well..-you crossed your arms, but out of a sudden it felt like bracing yourself for an impact you didn’t know would come yet-have a good night then.
-You too-he retorted in a small voice, but was already out of the doorstep.
—-
He didn’t mention his suspicious mood, or the dreams afterwards, and so, you supposed he had moved on. Guys could just do that, couldn’t they?
The day of the Spring Gala was approaching, and although you did decide to go with him, you got to attend a party together even earlier, as Bianca and the Nightshades had decided to throw a little Rave’N just for the students, without the ballgowns and all.
It’s not like you were going officially together, but it was almost not even in question, that he’d accompany you. Like Lilith going with his boyfriend, and you two as friends. No big deal.
You’d just discussed it in a few words, how he’d come to pick you up at nine, before you went to the party.
The current time was 8:45 pm though, and you were frantically running around your room, trying to find everything you were supposed to bring with you.
-Remind me, who are you going with again?-Lilith asked casually, from the window she was currently sitting at while she waited for her boyfriend. -Ajax-you mumbled, only half paying attention.
-Right. And you’ve decided to dress like that for him?-she snapped back, staring over your outfit.
Your black, leather mini skirt hugged your figure tightly, and the deep green hue of the top emphasized the hazel in your eyes, along with the strapped in boots you reserved for parties like these. -No? Why, is something wrong with it?-you looked over yourself worriedly.
It wasn’t like girlfriend level hot, but you thought you looked nice.
-Oh no, girl, you look fire. I usually dress like that when I want to charm a guy, is all-she smirked knowingly, and you bit your lower lip.
Truthfully, you wouldn’t mind if that happened either. But you weren’t about to plant false hopes.
-We’ll see how the night goes-you shrugged casually.
A gentle howl sounded from the other side of the window, signaling that Gus, Lilith’s boyfriend had arrived. The girl rose immediately, blowing you a kiss before she adjusted her dress one last time. -Gotta go. See you at the party? -Sure thing. Love you.
She quipped her lips, checking you out once more. -Don’t worry, Ajax’s gonna go crazy if he sees you.
-Khm, I said I love you-you replied grumpily, ignoring the last comment. -Yeah yeah, love you too, you goofball.
All you did was roll your eyes, and by the next second, she was already gone. You used the few remaining minutes to check your appearance one last time in the mirror.
Hair presentably wavy, makeup done, outfit all checked. All you had to do was finally get your heart under control, but that surprisingly, seemed harder than most tasks.
A few minutes later, a swift knock signaled that Ajax has arrived too. -Coming!-you shot back, making sure to actually cover the mirror before you went to open the door, and smiled when you saw his tall frame standing right in the doorway. -Hi.
Ajax wore one of his rarely used, black leather jackets with a matching black cap, some rusty trousers, and a green shirt, and your heart jumped upon seeing how you accidentally matched your outfits.
-Oh, hey you..-he stepped into the light, and as his eyes fell over you, he stopped dead in his tracks for a second.
You tilted your head, looking up at a bit nervously at him and you waited for him to say something.
It took a while before Ajax whistled in a low tone, still not deciding to take his eyes off of you. -Wow. You’re a sight today.
-And your manners are slipping, gorgon boy-you grinned cheekily, grabbing your purse as he let you in front of himself at the door-ready to go?
Ajax stood in the same place for a few moments, his features frozen in that same, weirdly unfamiliar expression before he decided to tag along. -I think I just won’t answer that question today.
—-
The party was a mess, but luckily, just the kind you liked. The huge, otherwise abandoned hall was brimming with outcast energy, and all too loud music that made an alluring mix with the lively chatter of all the people around.
Ajax, although he didn’t promise to actually stay by your side, rarely let you off his radar, disappearing only for a few moments to get a bunch of drinks for the two of you.
Somehow, though, that was enough for a cocky siren boy to sneak his way into your private space. -Hi there beautiful. What’s a goddess like you doing all alone?
You had turned around, already opening your mouth to smack him away, when you felt a firm hand around your shoulder, as the familiar scent of Ajax’s perfume filled your nostrils. -Waiting for her boyfriend. Do I need to stone you or will you just fuck off?
-No no, sorry mate-the boy put up his hands in surrender, sending you a playful smile-didn’t know she was already taken. You two have a good night.
-We will-Ajax smirked wolfishly, glaring after him as he disappeared into the crowd.
His hands were still hanging around you, but it didn’t occur to you to snap them away, as you turned towards him, crossing your arms. -I could’ve handled that you know.
-I couldn’t-he shrugged, leading his hands downward as he intertwined your fingers with his-come on. You’re coming with me, or else, I might actually stone your next candidate.
-Are you jealous, Jax?-you quirked a brow, smiling up at him suspiciously as you tagged along.
-What? No-he chuckled in disbelief, but you didn’t fail to notice how his eyes flickered over to you for a second-I just did you a favor. Or would you rather be hanging out with a siren’s tongue down your throat instead?
-Don’t traumatise me, geez-you snorted, jogging a little so you could catch up to him-never said I would, although.. That Kent guy’s got a nice jawline. I wonder how his kiss would taste like..
Ajax turned around so quickly you thought his neck might snap. -What?
You tilted your head, smirking up at him victoriously. -That’s it, right there. Don’t deny it, Jax. You are jealous.
Ajax kept staring at you for a whole minute, before he rolled his eyes, mumbling under his breath. -Yeah whatever.
As the night progressed, you lost count of the shots you had, along with any known count of the time, as you and Ajax stole the time away.
You chattered with a few people, played a few party games, and even smoked a little, ending up in the middle of the dance floor in the end with Ajax’s arms casually hanging around your waist, yours somewhere in his hair, as you swayed nonchalantly to the music.
The clumsiness kind of alcohol effect, luckily, hasn’t kicked in yet, but the bravery one did, that may have been the only reason you leaned a little closer, ignoring his hot breath all over your face so that you could talk to him.
-You know..-Ajax immediately leaned in, syncing his movements with you-there’s something I want to tell you. -Tell me babygirl.
You flicked your tongue in dismay at the nickname, and but he just shrugged. -Go on. I’m your boyfriend, aren’t I?
-Whatever-you rolled your eyes-Aren’t you supposed to be looking for Enid by now anyway?
-I don’t feel like talking about Enid tonight-he retorted, and you noticed that same new flicker was back in his eyes-or getting back with her ever again actually.
-Interesting-you murmured, although it came out more like a slur-why the change of heart? -Attention’s on someone else-he shrugged, leaning down even closer towards you-and let me tell you, she’s really persuasive.
Your eyes widened a little as his words, but the alcohol dampened the effect, somehow mixing the paranoia of your rational side with the sarcasm of your emotional one. -You’re only saying stuff like that because we’re drunk-you sighed, waving him off.
Ajax shook his head, licking his lips just slightly before he pulled you closer to him. -The fact that you’re already supposing it’s you tells me more than I need to know.
-Be careful. I’m still not above knocking you out, pretty boy-you smirked in hardly masked threat.
-In that case..-his dark gaze suddenly flickered to your lips, and you shivered just slightly-I’ve got something to tell you.
-I’m all ears-you nodded, barely taking notice of how you were already out of breath.
Ajax gave you a sly smile, before grabbing the small of your waist more firmly, his other hand going to the side of your face, and he pulled you in just enough to be able to mutter onto your lips. -You’re impossible to be around.
You hung your head back, laughing whole heartedly for the first time since you arrived. Weirdly, no urge to resist had come over you. Hearing what he was saying. Or how he acted. You found you didn’t mind at all. -Is that why you pretended to be my boyfriend?
-Oh I don’t need to be your boyfriend to do the things I want to do… -he retorted snarkily-but I’m not saying I would mind.
-Which are?-you replied suspiciously-if this is all a part of another mocking theatre of yours, I won’t be merciful.
This time it was Ajax turn to laugh, and yours to shriek, as he deliberately threw you over his shoulder, exiting the messy room without anyone noticing too much about it. Or your desperate pleas. -Ajax! Put me down this instant, or I swear I’ll knock your cocky ass into permanent unconciousness!
He, on the other hand, didn’t hear you, or just decided to ignore it, but he didn’t stop until arriving to a narrow, cool corridor where you could finally be by yourself.
Then, as if he hadn’t just been treating you like a bag, he dropped you off to the ground, pinning you swiftly to the wall and the next moment his lips were already hovering all over yours.
You, for a change, started to get seriously terrified. -Ajax.. -you whispered, accusatorially out of breath.
His hands were still holding both of your thighs steadily against the brick walls, and it was getting impossibly hard to find a reason why you shouldn’t let him kiss you senseless.
-Y/N..-he groaned back, pulling you even closer-I..
-Ajax..?
The pair of you had jumped apart like someone’s just fired a gun at you. There, in the faint glimpse of the moonlight, stood Enid like a small, avenging angel, her features freezing into a frown as she stared at the two of you.
-Enid.. uh hi-Ajax quickly put you down on the ground, and you couldn’t brush off the feeling of humiliation washing over you.
-I.. I just wanted to talk to you, but I see you’re already busy-the werewolf girl quipped back in an cold tone, her blue eyes icily running over you-Guess I’m not the only one who’s already moved on, huh??
Ajax looked pained, as he stood there, seemingly torn between the two of you. -Look, I may owe you an explanation but..
The colorful haired werewolf had already turned on her heels, storming off into the night, though. He didn’t run after her, but just stood there as if all the strength had suddenly escaped him.
A few steps behind him, you stood feeling glued to the ground, and suddenly, the rush of the moment had turned all of your emotions into freezing cold hovering all over your skin.
The gorgon, with his crazy hearing, snapped his head around immediately, still looking a bit out of place as he smiled back at you. -Well that was an interruption. Wait, are you okay?
-Yeah yeah-you mumbled, nodding too quickly although you still felt the shivering cold all over your skin. That weird feeling in your chest was more palpable though, stealing most of your current focus.
-No you’re not, you’re freezing-Ajax mumbled, softly touching one of your arms that, betraying you, had goosebumps all over it-come here.
You pondered for a moment, whether to resist, but his embrace felt so warm as he picked you up in his arms that all sheer will had escaped your body.
Not the feelings though. -Ajax?-you mumbled, as he started walking towards some unknown direction in the dark. -Yeah?
Your voice was small, and a little self-conscious when you spoke. -Aren’t you like.. going after her or what?
Ajax snorted whole heartedly as he perked down at you. -After her? No way in hell. Why would I do that, when I’ve got you right here in my arms?
Your heart jumped at his words, and you did not like it. Well, that was a lie, you did, but the thought of the heartbreaking after effects when the alcohol wears out, and he decides to change his mind? Not so much.
-I thought this whole finale was to get her attention-you muttered-we talked about it.
-Well that’s... not the case anymore-he muttered, gesturing to the two of you-I want this to be serious between us.
-But.. I don’t understand-you muttered, still a bit dubiously-just the other day, you said..
-The other day I was a prick, and I didn’t know what my own feelings were trying to tell me-he shook his head, the vulnerability in his eyes catching you by surprise-you know what I dreamt about, in that coma? I saw you die because of me. Because I was too preoccupied with Enid, instead of just doing anything to keep you by side. I’m not about to fuck this up for a second time.
-Right. And you decided sex was the best medicine for your problems?-you quirked a brow, chuckling a little.
-No, I.. what?!-he gave you a look of sheer disbelief-is that what you were thinking about? After one almost kiss?-then, as he kept talking a a cocky grin slowly spread across his features-Gosh, I’m better at this than I thought.
You realized you answered to the wrong part of the sentence too late, and he noticed it before you could try and save yourself. -No, I.. I never said I did, just.. you’re implying things again dammit.
-Oh no babygirl, you don’t get to escape this-he retorted, still grinning as if he’s face couldn’t split any minute-did I mention I love seeing you so flustered? Because I do.
You on the other hand, didn’t feel like admitting to lose to anything tonight. -Leave me alone.
Ajax chuckled at your miserable experiments to escape, giving you a curious look as he leaned a bit closer. -Out of all times tonight, this is when you decide to be shy? Really?
-Why wouldn’t I? It’s impossible to know when you’re serious, and when you’re just joking around-you huffed, hanging your head back with a hint of desperation-a moment ago you seemed like you would confess you loved me, and the next you’re being like this.
Ajax smiled endearingly, gently caressing your face and when you realized that meant he was holding you with only one of his arms that steadily, you blushed in a deep shade of crimson. Meanwhile, he never took his eyes off of you. -I was going to, you know. But you interrupted me.
-Are you trying to blame this on me?-you gasped in pretense of being offended.
-No, I’m just telling you you’re distracting-he shrugged, sending you a meaningful look as he glanced at your body-have you seen yourself in that skirt? Or like in anything else? No guy would ever be able to stay sane longer than an hour, and I lasted four. You should be proud of me.
You groaned in annoyance, but also couldn’t help chuckling a little. God be merciful, this guy… -So..-you said after a while, only when you were sure your heart wouldn’t accidentally jump out of its place-were you going to say something?
-Yeah. I’m in love with you-he admitted softly, staring right into your eyes-that confession enough?
You gulped, trying your best to contain your excitement as you quipped your lips thoughtfully. -Hmm, I might need a little more convincing. Like, in the bedroom? My bedroom?
Ajax laughed coarsely, before dumping you on his shoulder as he sped up his steps, and this time he didn’t even try to hide how his hands roamed around your ass under the excuse of ,,making sure your skirt didn’t slip to the wrong place.”
Luckily, your quarters weren’t that far enough, and about twelve minutes later, the both of you were already comfortably entangled in your bed, wearing about half the amount of clothes, and a little out of breath. -For the record-you mumbled, before pulling him into another kiss-I’m in love with you too.
Ajax grinned at you cheekily. -Lucky me. I was already wondering whether I’d have to start persuading you into giving me an answer. -Like you’d ever try-you snorted.
-Excuse me, do you not remember anything from the last two weeks?
-Like I said, I might need a reminder-you whispered sweetly-or several ones.
-That won’t be a problem-Ajax huffed back, leaning just as closely so that you could feel his smirk on your lips. The next moment, you were lost in his touch, without any intention of sobering up out of it, ever again.
